A Block and tackle is a system of two pulleys and one rope. One of the pulleys, the fixed pulley, is attached to a point overhead. The other, the movable pulley, is attached to a load. By pulling the rope through both pulleys, we gain a mechanical advantage, so that, for instance, a 100-pound load can be raised with a 50-pound force.
