Cornelius Harnett (1715 - 1783) was a delegate from North Carolina to the Continental Congress from 1777-1779 and a signer of the Articles of Confederation. A merchant, he served as a member of the colonial assembly from 1754-1775; Harnett also served as chairman of the North Carolina Sons of Liberty, and was a key figure in leading resistance to the Stamp Act. Harnett was captured by the British in January of 1781, and died while still being held captive in April 1781.[1]
