The school was founded in 1904 and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.[2] The college was named for Henry G. Davis and his son-in-law Stephen B. Elkins who were both members of the United States Senate from West Virginia. It offers a 4 term system so that many students can graduate in three years.[3]
The college president is G.T. "Buck" Smith.[4] He had been a consultant to the college from 1998 to 2001. He was named president in 2008.[2]
The Senator, the college newspaper, was founded in December 1922.
