Denigration is speaking ill of, defaming, maligning, belittling, damaging or otherwise sullying the character and good name of someone, or to downplay their contribution in some way.

e.g. Some people insist that the Vikings discovered North America before Christopher Columbus, thereby denigrating Columbus's role in history.
