Gerardo Murillo Cornadó (Guadalajara 1875 - Mexico City 1964), also known as Dr. Atl (Atl in Nahuatl means water). A Mexican painter and volcanist, he was one of the pioneers of the Mexican artistic nationalism movement. During the Mexican Revolution period he became active in the muralist movement along with figures such as José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. He also befriended Joaquin Clausell.
Dr. Atl's most famous paintings are of the Valley of Mexico and its volcanoes.
Murillo changed his name to Atl, which in the Aztec language, Nahuatl, means water, the source of life.
