Energy is very wasted.  Everything that comes to the Earth is via the Sun, not counting of course nuclear processes.  We should also include gravitational processes like the tides.  A Tesla electric car costs about $4 per charge (Discover Magazine, Dec 2009).  More later.

Energy is the ability to do work.[1] In physics, energy is a conserved quantity, and a closed system of interacting particles is known to always have the same value for its energy; this is known as the law of conservation of energy.[2]

Energy is also a source of usable heat or power.
