2018 is already shaping up to be a terrible year for atheist activists.

Consider:

1. In January of 2018, the first major atheist conference to be held in New York City was cancelled.[1] The Atheist Underground YouTube channel indicated about the cancellation, "Atheist Conferences are failing all over the place. People need to quite trying to run an event that is just the same old thing."[2] The Atheism and the City website wrote about the cancellation of the event: "The reasons why are complicated, but it started out difficult enough. The atheist community has splintered into a million shards in recent years."[3] See: Atheist factions and Decline of the atheist movement

Atheism is in decline worldwide, with the number of atheists falling from 4.5% of the world’s population in 1970 to 2.0% in 2010 and projected to drop to 1.8% by 2020.[4] See: Global atheism

2. Google trends measures the interest in various words/phrases as far as Google searches over time.

Below is Google trends data for various terms relating to atheism/agnosticism for various countries and the the world as a whole.

As you can see below, searches for atheist related terms is falling in both the world and the United States.

3. Egypt is moving to outlaw atheism and a very prominent Islamic academic center is endorsing this move.[5] Should Egypt outlaw atheism, this will sharpen the already dim view that Islamic cultures have regarding atheists/atheism. See also: Atheism vs. Islam and Distrust of atheists

4. Since 1970, the global market share of atheists in the world has been shrinking and various trends point to this continuing in 2018. See: Global atheism statistics and Desecularization and Causes of desecularization
