Cardinal Francis Arinze (b. 1932) is a conservative leader in the Catholic Church, and the cleric whom liberals fear most as a contender to become the next Pope. An Igbo Nigerian, Cardinal Arinze was once the world's youngest bishop.
His credentials include spending 25 years in the Vatican, enabling him to earn the respect of many other Cardinals.
Cardinal Arinze is over 80 years of age, and thus will not participate in the Papal conclave that will choose a successor to Pope Benedict XVI. The last Bishop of Rome to elected when he was over the age of 80 was Pope Gregory XII in 1406.
