The Gospel according to Mark is the second Gospel in the New Testament, but most likely the first to be written and the only one that introduces itself as a "gospel".

Mark (or John Mark), its author, was most likely the young son (perhaps ten years old) of a woman who was a follower and supporter of Jesus. Mark was a close aide to and possibly a scribe for Peter, who referred to him as his "son".[1]

The Gospel of Mark focuses more on human frailties and weaknesses than the other Gospels, and devotes less attention to the parables. Mark apparently describes his own shame as he witnessed and fled from Jesus's arrest: "A certain young man was following him, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, but he left the linen cloth and ran off naked."[2]

The theme of this Gospel is that suffering and loss are not always bad; for Christians they are the way to eternal life.

There are about 678 verses in the Gospel of Mark; translating merely six verses a day would result in a complete translation of this Gospel in less than four months.[3]

13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? Then he asked them, "Don't you understand this parable? If not, how can you understand all of the other parables?"

'even as he was' needs some explanation for the modern reader.

Waves started to break over the boat, so that it began to fill with water. Boat can't have been literally full as we would think of it, as Jesus was asleep on a pillow (see next verse).
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? Jesus was sleeping on a cushion in the back of the boat. They woke him saying, "Master, don't you care that we'll capsize and drown?" Could say "stern" rather than "back of the boat," but nautical terminology is unfamiliar to many.
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He got up and rebuked the wind, and commanded the sea, "Peace, be still." The wind then stopped, and there was complete calm.

Keep "man" to avoid emasculating Christianity.

"The prophets" was known to the audience of the time as the OT prophets, but this should be made clear to the modern reader.
16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. Herod succumbed to the rumors and opined, "He is John, who I had murdered, back from the dead."
17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. For it had been Herod who had sent his men to capture and imprison John for his brother Philip's wife, Herodias, who he had married.

44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. Five thousand men had filled their stomachs on just two loaves of bread and five fish.
45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. Then Jesus had his disciples board the ship, to go to Bethsaida ahead of him, while he bid the people farewell.

62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Jesus answered this one, saying "Yes I am, and you all are going to see the son of man sitting at the right hand side of power and coming in the clouds of heaven."
63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? The high priest ripped his shirt off, saying "Witnesses? We don't need any more witnesses!
64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. You all heard that blasphemy, now what do you think about that?" And they all condemned him to death.
65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands. Some of them spat on him. They put a bag over his head and punched him. They taunted him, "So tell us the future, prophet!", and the servants slapped him.
66 And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest: Meanwhile, Peter was down in the palace, when one of the high priest's maids came by.
67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "Hey, you were with that Jesus of Nazareth, weren't you?"
68 But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. He denied it, saying, "I don't have any idea what you're talking about." And as he went out to the porch, the rooster crowed.
69 And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them. And another maid saw him, and said to the bystanders, "This is one of them."
70 And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.
71 But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.
72 And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. But when the women looked, they saw that the massive stone had been rolled to the side. why not use the pronoun "women" here?
5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.
8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.
9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. The verses from here on are not in the oldest manuscripts, and are not likely to be authentic.[7]
10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.
12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
