Dr. Harry Hamilton Laughlin (March 11, 1880 – January 26, 1943) was a leading proponent of eugenics in the United States during the first half of the 20th century, and was responsible for the creation of laws in several states requiring forced sterilization of those he deemed to be socially, physically, or mentally unfit for society. This ultimately resulted in some 60-70,000 American citizens to be sterilized against their will by the 1970's. His ideas and beliefs were taken up by the Nazis in Germany, resulting in over 350,000 individuals sterilized prior to the outbreak of World War II.
