Herbert Benson (b. 1935) American M.D., a pioneer in the field of mind/body medicine, is the founding president of the Mind/Body Medical Institute. He is the director emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.
A graduate of Wesleyan University and the Harvard Medical School, Dr. Herbert Benson is the author or co-author of more than 175 scientific publications and 11 books. He also assists in the direction of the clinical and research activities of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine.
More than four million copies of his books have been printed in many languages. The Relaxation Response, 1975, is his most famous book. The Breakout Principle is the last self-help book of his career. Benson and William Proctor describe in this book techniques that can lead to any (or all) of this six "peak experiences": Self-Awareness, Creativity, Productivity, Athleticism, Rejuvenation, and Transcendence. 
His work serves as a bridge between medicine and religion, East and West, mind and body.
