Occasionally a derogatory term used for someone with liberal political beliefs, the term "Hippie" refers in fact to the anti-war movement spawned by the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Hippie culture was dominated by this theme, and the theme of rock 'n roll. Hippie culture also became associated with recreational drug use, "free love," although these associations were not held by every "hippie."

Hippies in Pop Culture

"Hippies" are the archnemeses of Eric Cartman, a character in the cartoon show South Park on Cartoon Network.

In the hit show Futurama, the Emperor Lurr, lord of the planet Omicron Persei 8, eats a hippie in the episode entitled, "The Problem with Popplers." This episode featured a hippie lobbying for ethical treatment of extremely tasty alien animals.

While generally thought to avoid work, hippies tend to dominate in games of Ultimate Frisbee.
