James Naismith

James Naismith (1861-1939) was a Canadian-born physical education instructor who invented the game of basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1892. He later became the basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Ironically, he is the only coach in the university's history to have an overall losing record.
