The Litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Christ is a prayer in honor of the Holy Name of Jesus Christ. It begins by referring to the Holy Trinity and observing the nature of the person of Jesus Christ as man and God. It then lists inspirational names for Jesus Christ derived from His works. One source of Christians' special reverence for the Holy Name of Jesus Christ is observed in Saint Paul's Epistle to the Philippians (2:10) in which he says "That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth".

The litany concentrates on exhorting Christ to aid the faithful in overcoming spiritual trials that prevent them from sharing in His Grace, to which Christ said: "If you ask the Father anything in my name he will give it you." (John 16:23). Therefore the Church concludes all her prayers by invoking the Holy Name of Jesus Christ with the words: "Through Our Lord Jesus Christ". [1]

The litany ends with several prayers asking Christ for the blessing of continuing a life of faith through good words and deeds as well as to always remain in His care through the faithful's love and fear His Holy Name.

History

The author of the litany is unknown. New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia concludes it was likely written by "celebrated preachers of the Holy Name, Saints Bernardine of Siena and John Capistran, at the beginning of the fifteenth century." [2] The litany was approved for recitation in the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1862. [3]
