Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Garanhuns, Pernambuco State, 1945 - ) a socialist politician was the 35th President of Brazil. He was succeeded by Dilma Rousseff on January 1, 2011. In 1980, he founded with a group of leaders the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) or Workers' Party, a left-wing party. Lula ran for President of Brazil three times unsuccessfully.

Under Mr. da Silva, Brazil emerged as one of the world's major economies, along with Russia, India and China. It is estimated that 30 million people joined the middle class during his eight-year presidency. [1]

Ex-president Lula made Brazil economic growth and poverty alleviation top priorities. Export promotion was a main component in plans to generate growth and reduce what was seen as a vulnerability to international financial market gyrations.
