Prophecy is the act of revealing divine guidance or future events, not because of chance or reasonable inference, but as a consequence of having received a gift from God.

The Bible records the acts of a number of different prophets, and prophecy is described as a gift of the Holy Spirit. False prophets have been stoned for deceiving in the name of God.
