The Sierra Club is a liberal American environmental organization co-founded in 1892 by John Muir and Joseph LeConte. The Sierra Club is a coalition partner of the liberal coalition America Votes.[1]

Their stated mission is to:[2]

  1. Explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth.
  2. Practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources.
  3. Educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment.
  4. Use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

By 2011, however, it had become a $100-million-per-year entity with declining membership and reliance on at least one multi-million-dollar deal with the corporate world.

In 2016, current President Aaron Mair asked the National Park Service Director to rename the LeConte Memorial Lodge in the Yosemite Valley. It appears that the co-founder LeConte had a long history of racist views.[3]
