It has been a battleground for filling vacancies because it is nearly evenly split between liberal and conservative judges. As of September 2007, Republican-appointed active judges outnumber Democratic-appointed active judges by only 8-6, and at least one Republican-appointed judge (Deborah Cook) voted to invalidate Michigan's ban on partial-birth abortion in Northland Family Planning Clinic, Inc. v. Cox, 487 F.3d 323 (6th Cir. June 4, 2007).
