As governor he was a moderate Republican, supporting civil rights and helping repeal laws against interracial sex, he also supported drafting [[Nelson Rockefeller]] for the GOP presidential nomination in 1968 but after Rockefeller did not enter the race as soon as anticipated, switched to supporting Nixon. He took bribes and pled "no contest" to failure to report income on the bribes.
