The Theosophical Society is an advocate of practices such as meditation, belief in reincarnation, and Eastern mysticism (see Monism). It was founded in New York in 1875 by Madame H.P. Blavatsky (originally a baptized member of the Russian Orthodox Church), but moved to London in 1888. Its headquarters were later moved to India. It still exists today but its membership is not as numerous as it used to be.
In 1907, Annie Besant became the Society's President.
Cult
Walter Martin lists the Society as a cult in his book The Kingdom of the Cults.[1] An expanded edition was published in 2003 with Ravi Zacharias.
