Topeka is the capital city of Kansas, and is located in the northeastern part of the state in Shawnee County. As of 2005, its population has been estimated to be about 121,946. [1] The city is home to Washburn University and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site.

The city's name comes from an American Indian word meaning "good place to grow potatoes". [2]
