Praise by atheists
The Treaty of Tripoli was a peace agreement made between the United States and Tripoli. It was drafted and signed by the Bey in Algiers in 1796, the ratified by Congress and signed by President John Adams in 1797.
Treaty The treaty has been lauded by atheists in modern times because of Article 11, which states, in part, that "the Government of Peace and Friendship between the United States and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of BarbaryAmerica is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."
Authored by American diplomat Joel Barlow in 1796, the following treaty was sent to the floor of the Senate, June 7, 1797, where it was read aloud in its entirety and unanimously approved. John Adams, having seen the treaty, signed it and proudly proclaimed it to the Nation.
