A troy ounce is a unit of measure used for precious metals, such as gold, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Its name is based on Troyes, France. There are 12 troy ounces in a troy pound, in contrast with 16 conventional ounces to a conventional pound.

A troy ounce is slightly heavier than an ordinary ounce: there are 14.58 troy ounces in one conventional pound.
