United States presidential election, 1848
In the 1848 United States presidential election, President James Knox Polk had decided not to run. Instead the Democratic party nominated Lewis Cass to run for President of the United States. The Whigs decided to nominated the famous General of Buena Vista, Zachary Taylor. Also, ex-President Martin Van Buren ran on the Free-Soil party platform. All of the candidates campaigned hard and long. The election results were seen earlier that year because of a new invention, the electromagnetic telegraph. The results were:
