Vancouver is a city located in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Named after Captain George Vancouver, an English explorer, the city was founded in 1886 when the first Canadian transcontinentinetal railway arrived. In November of 2008, the city elected Gregor Robertson as its mayor. Vancouver has a population of 578,041 while its CMA has a population of 2,116,581.  Greater Vancouver is the largest metropolitan area in western Canada and the third largest in the country. It is also the largest city in the Pacific Northwest and is the second-largest metropolitan area (second to Seattle)

The XXI Olympic Winter Games took place in 2010 and were held in Vancouver and in the resort community of Whistler some 60 miles to the north west.
