Previously he served one-term in the California State Assembly. Becerra is a staunch liberal, and was appointed to the new position of "assistant to the Speaker" by Nancy Pelosi, where he helped set priorities for the Democratic Party's agenda. He is also a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee.

In 2001, Becerra unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for Mayor of Los Angeles, but finished fifth behind former Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa.
