Zubin Mehta

Zubin Mehta (born 1936) is an Indian conductor. Mehta studied conducting under Hans Swarowsky at the Vienna Academy of Music. He made his debut in 1958 and in the same year won the International Conductor's Competition in Liverpool. He was appointed Music Director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (1960-64) and of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1962-78). His operatic debuts include the Salzburg Festival and Metropolitan in 1965, La Scala in 1974 and the Covent Garden in 1977. He is Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic and, from 1978-1991, Director of the New York Philharmonic.
