Brigham Young University–Idaho (BYU–Idaho or BYU–I) is a private university located in Rexburg, Idaho. Founded in 1888, the university is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). It was founded in 1888 as Bannock Stake Academy. From 1923 to 2001, it was known as Ricks College. That year, it shifted from a junior college to a four-year institution and changed its name to BYU–I.[1]
BYU-Idaho offers programs in liberal arts, engineering, agriculture, management, and performing arts. The university is organized into six colleges. The university offers 17 associates and 70 bachelor's degree programs; and it operates using a three-semester system also known as "tracks".
Approximately 99% of the university's students are members of the LDS Church, and 40% of the student body takes a two-year brake from their studies at some point to serve as missionaries.[2]
Since becoming a four-year institution, BYU-Idaho no longer hosts intercollegiate athletic teams but does have intramural sports.
