Claude Gaspard Bachet de Méziriac (1581-1638) was a French mathematician who wrote the Problèmes plaisants, first published in 1612. This work consisted of a collection of arithmetical tricks and questions.

He also wrote Les éléments arithmétiques, which exists in manuscript, and he translated the Arithmetic of Diophantus.

Bachet was the earliest writer who discussed the solution of indeterminate equations by means of continued fractions.
