Most individuals are overweight due to their dietary and exercise habits.[1]

The fat acceptance movement is a social movement that seeks to remove the social stigma caused by various negative attitudes/beliefs related to obesity and/or excess overweight. Fat acceptance movement activists have various initiatives to influence the legal, political and medical communities. The fat acceptance movement is a subculture and more women than men are involved in the movement.[2]

Most individuals are overweight due to their dietary and exercise habits.[3] And gluttony and sloth are sins according to the Bible.[4][5]

The health risks of obesity are high (See: Health risks linked to obesity) which adds to a country's healthcare cost burden plus there is a lot of needless pain and suffering imposed on both individuals and families by individuals' poor weight management.

Preventive medicine refers to medical methods taken to prevent diseases and/or injuries rather than treating them once they have already occurred.

According to the medical journal Lancet:

A substantial proportion of poor health in populations is preventable. Previous work from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study1 suggests that nearly half of all health burden in the USA is attributable to a list of 84 modifiable risk factors. Globally, it is also generally accepted that a quarter, or perhaps up to half, of all deaths fall into the category of preventable deaths, making illness that can at least theoretically be avoided an accepted part of our health accounting.

In The Lancet Public Health, Howard Bolnick and colleagues extend this logic in the US context and quantify the proportion of US health-care spending in 2016 that was due to preventable causes.3 They found that more than a quarter (27·0%, 95% uncertainty interval [UI] 25·7–28·4) of health-care spending was due to these preventable illnesses.[6]

Most people can slim down and lose their excess weight permanently. It does require some effort and lifestyle changes

The 20% of overweight people who are able to achieve permanent weight loss typically report doing it through engaging in high levels of physical activity, eating a low-calorie diet, eating breakfast regularly, self-monitoring weight, and maintaining a consistent eating pattern across weekdays and weekends.[7]

Japanese society's tough love on overweight people is good public policy - including its shaming of fat people

Sumo wrestling ceremony in Japan.

Unlike most fat people in Japan, sumo wrestlers do not experience fat shaming.

Most societies have exceptions to rules and conventions. Japan is no different.

Previously, I wrote the essay at: Japanese society's tough love on overweight people is good public policy - including its shaming of fat people.

To date, no country facing the current obesity crisis in much of the world has successfully conquered the public health problem except for one - Japan. Kudos to the Japanese.

In 2013, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reported that 75% of American lesbians are obese.[9][10] In April 2007, the American Journal of Public Health analyzed data from 2002 National Survey of Family Growth and the data suggested that American lesbian women were 2.69 times more likely to be overweight and 2.47 times more likely to be obese than all other female sexual orientation groups. [11] The abstract for this study indicated that "lesbians are at greater risk for morbidity and mortality linked to overweight and obesity." [11]

According to Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia founded by an atheist and agnostic, "Irreligion in the Philippines is particularly rare among Filipinos...".[12] Most Filipinas are Catholic, although some are Protestants or other religious faiths.

Beauty pageants are very popular in the Philippines and they have had a winning streak in major international beauty pageants.[13]

Katrina Escalona wrote in her article Why The Philippines Dominates World Beauty Pageants

The Philippines has, rather consistently, held an exemplary track record in the world of pageants, always making it to the top 10, at the very least. Since the commencement of the Miss Earth pageants in 2001 for example, only thrice did the country fail to make it to the top 10. And in the Miss Universe pageants, held to be the most prestigious of the Big Four, the Philippines has placed without fail since 2010. Venus Raj (2010), Shamcey Supsup (2011), Janine Tugonon (2012), and Arielle Arida (2013) in particular, made a proud nation when they were crowned runners up year after year. And to the thrill of millions of Filipinos, in 2015, the country finally took home the crown.[14]

In 2015/2017, the Philippines had the most wins in the Big Four International Beauty Pageants.[15][16] The Big Four consists of the four major international beauty pageants for women – Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Earth. The group was first described by the China Daily newspaper in 2004 as "the world's four major beauty contests".[17]

Furthermore, according the CIA's World Factbook, the Philippines was ranked in 169 out of 192 in terms of its obesity rate in 2016 and its obesity rate was merely 6.20% which is low compared to many countries.[18]

ABS CBN News reported in the article How PH became the top beauty pageant country in the world: "In 2016, Philippines garnered 106.02 points from the five major beauty pageants worldwide. This after the Philippines won Miss International, was first runner-up at Miss Grand International, finalists at Miss World and Miss Universe, and a quarter-finalist at Miss Supranational. Venezuela came in at second with 100.00 points."[19]

In 2013, the Philippines was the first country to win all the top 5 international beauty pageants.[20]
