Essay: Why a Westerner falling for Russian propaganda is like a man who is seduced by a corrupt 300 pound woman

Westerners falling for Russian propaganda and choosing to be ardent Russia lovers is like a guy being seduced by a corrupt 300-pound woman. If I were to pick a country outside the USA to very much like/love, I would pick Singapore over Russia any day of the week. Singapore is a much more attractive country than Russia and definitely not a corrupt 300 pound woman of a country (As far as Singapore, given the influence of its prior British governance, it is one of the most Westernized countries in Asia.[1] See also: Why has the West been so successful?). And I have several reasons why I am not bullish on Russia's future (See: Why I am not bullish on Russia's future).

"Singapore's safety and low crime rate make it an attractive destination for expats, as it provides peace of mind and security for those living and working in the city-state. The country is considered one of the safest places in Asia, and it is a great place for expats to raise families." [2] See also: Videos on Singapore's economic miracle. Videos on Singapore's highly developed and safe country

There is far less social dysfunction in Singapore than in Russia. Singapore has a low crime rate and a highly educated population. A far higher percentage of Russian men die of alcoholism or other self-destructive behaviors in Russia than are materially harmed by caning in Singapore. "In 2021, life expectancy at birth for women in Russia was about 74.77 years, while life expectancy at birth for men was about 64.21 years on average."[3] In 2020, life expectancy in Singapore was 83.74 years (2020).[4] Also, "The average life expectancy of males in Singapore is 80.7 years. The life expectancy at birth for males increased from 70.1 years in 1981 to 80.7 years in 2022, an increase of 15.1%. When we compare male life expectancy with a decade back (79.8 years in 2012), it increased by 0.9 years."[5]

The national life expectancy numbers don't lie and it's impossible for Westerners who have been duped by Russian propaganda to sweep Russian society dysfunction under the rug.

Also, consider this: Russia Facing 'Critical' Shortage of Police: "Corruption is also taking a toll. A police major from the city of Tomsk said that officers are "beating confessions out of people, inflating arrest quotas. We're seeing this all the time. It's only going to get worse. There will be falsification of evidence, targeted beatings. There just isn't going to be time to investigate anything properly." - Newsmax, 2023.

And, Russia Suffers Gun Crime Explosion as Police Say Cases Have Gone Up by 600% - Newsweek, November 2022.

I will also point out that Singaporeans aren't known for engaging in horrific war crimes, but the Russians are (See: Russian war crimes in Ukraine).

Attention Westerners falling for Russian propaganda: It's very clear that Singapore is a much better country to live in than Russia, but go ahead and continue to embrace your corrupt 300-pound woman like country. I just hope your arms are long enough to embrace Mother Russia! A polka song lyric comes to mind: "Oh, I don't want her you can have her. She's too fat for me."

Vladimir's Putin's propaganda machine

Vladimir Putin at a conference

Patryk Babiracki an associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Arlington indicates:

Disinformation has long been a Russian strategy to manipulate its own citizens and to undermine U.S. democracy...

Yet President Vladimir Putin has found considerable success by waging a new version of the old propaganda war with the West. Russia’s global messaging today is nimbler, subtler and better funded, giving the Kremlin an edge in advancing its expansionist goals. But without the familiar ideological cues and division lines from the “first” Cold War, many Americans appear to have lowered their guard, accepting more nuanced, more pervasive Russian lies as just another point of view...

After his homeland’s humiliating defeat in the Cold War, Putin recognized that escalating and transforming the propaganda war is central to challenging U.S. dominance...

Under Putin, the Russian media has gained unprecedented power to spread global lies once again. But this time, news is free from the Marxist-Leninist logic and language, and it explicitly emulates Western journalism — both in appearance and the content of the news. Newscasters dress smartly and argue and schmooze with a panache their Soviet predecessors could have never matched...

Technology plays a key role. For instance, Moscow uses hired trolls and algorithms known as “bots” to replicate its message to the world. The news about immigration and terrorism that they amplify, to take one example, aims to undermine trust in the Western order by portraying the West as tottering on the edge of apocalypse.

More importantly, its content fits easily into the liberal-loathing echo chamber conservatives have created...

The Soviet government never dreamed that millions of patriotic Americans would read — and believe — Pravda. But as Russian-generated stories zip around the Internet and through conservative media circles, propaganda is proving to be an effective tool to undermine the values and cohesion of the West.[6]

Corruption is also taking a toll in Russia.

Russia's population is expected to age significantly over the next few decades due to its low fertility rate.[7]
Russia's demographic crisis has long been an existential issue to Vladimir Putin. In 2021, he declared “saving the people of Russia is our top national priority".[8]

Map of Singapore

The article What America Could Learn from Singapore's Social Welfare System indicates:

To take a look at how and where such a minimal standard of welfare design has been implemented successfully, one need only look at the city-state of Singapore. The Singapore welfare system is considered one of the most successful by first-world standards. World Bank data shows that Singapore’s government health expenditure in 2015 is only 4.3 percent of GDP, a small fraction in comparison to other first-world countries—16.9 percent in the US; 11 percent in France; 9.9 percent in the UK; 10.9 percent in Japan, and 7.1 percent in Korea—while achieving comparatively equal or better health outcomes of low infant mortality and higher life expectancies. While most of Europe, Scandinavia, and North America spend 30-40 percent of GDP on social welfare programs, Singapore spends less than half as much while maintaining similar levels of economic growth and a society relatively free of social problems."...

By compelling Singaporeans to save, welfare in Singapore has traditionally been internalized first to the individual and the family/grassroots level. This forms the crux of the government’s “Many Helping Hands” social policy where the role of the family and immediate community in welfare provision is emphasized over government-funded programs. Such a form of privatized charity is neither new nor unique, as a wealth of research shows how mutual aid societies predated modern welfare states in the 20th-century United States and the 19th-century United Kingdom."[9]

Singapore has the 2nd lowest infant mortality rate in the world - so it is much better than Russia in this respect as Russia has about a 400% higher infant mortality rate.[10]

In addition, Russia has the highest abortion rate in the world.[11]

Question: If Russia's societal system is so good then why do Singaporeans live so much longer than Russians? The proof is in the pudding!

Singapore compared to Russia: Parts of Russia are so bad to live in that Russia offers free land to Russians and foreigners. Singapore raises threshold for foreign investors seeking permanent residency

  • Russia offers free land to Russians and foreigners: "In an attempt to boost the population and economy of the largely undeveloped regions,Vladimir Putin has ordered free land handouts in Russia’s Far East and Siberia. Last week he signed a law offering land plots to Russians and foreigners for free if they are willing move to the country’s remote Far Eastern and Siberian regions. Under the deal, all citizens can apply for a hectare of land (2.5 acres) – about the size of a football pitch – in a vast stretch of territory spanning the upper Arctic reaches near Alaska, down to islands off the coast of Japan and south to the Chinese border."
