Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre (1758-1794) was a brilliant political leader who was thoroughly steeped in the Enlightenment philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the quest for useful knowledge advocated by encyclopedist Denis Diderot. A brilliant orator and organizer, he emerged a leading figure of the French Revolution, head of the powerful Committee for Public Safety. He was also inclined to tyranny, and was the architect of the so-called Reign of Terror. Robespierre was overthrown, arrested and executed in 1794.
