GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast
The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (commonly the Mother of All Bombs, MOAB) is one of the strongest non-nuclear bomb made by the Air Force Research Laboratory, and was introduced in 2003 prior to the Iraq War. It has a weight of 21,600 lbs.[1] The largest bomb in inventory is the 33,000 lbs. GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). Due to its size, it has to be delivered to a target by a Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.
Operational use
The MOAB was used on 13 April 2017,[2] under the increased autonomy President Donald Trump gave to his generals,[3] in Afghanistan to kill multiple ISIS-terrorists. It was estimated to have killed at least 94 ISIS fighters, including four commanders – no civilians were killed.[4][5] It also destroyed many of the tunnels as well as weapon stockpiles.[6][7] The attack was reported as having dealt a heavy blow to ISIS's Afghanistan branch.[8] This was the first time the bomb had been used, and at its use, it was the strongest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat.[9][10]
