Poutine is a Canadian dish, which consists of french fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy.[1]

During the 2000 presidential campaign, a Canadian actor asked future president George W. Bush how he felt now that Canadian prime minister Jean Poutine was endorsing his candidacy (the actual prime minister's name was Jean Chrétien). Bush responded:

"He understands I want to make sure our relationship with our most important neighbour to the north of us is strong and we'll work closely together."[2]

While the story received little newsplay in the United States, Canadian media used it demonstrate how little the candidate really knew Canadian politics. In reality, however, it is likely that he did not notice the name change, or was distracted.
