Reiki is an alternative healing art focusing on balancing human energy fields. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese words Rei (Meaning spirit) and Ki (Meaning energy) There are several forms of Reiki, however the most common are Usui and Kundalini. Of these, Usui Reiki is the oldest school of thought.
A uniting factor is that practitioners are able to run energy and therefore practice Reiki immediately after being attuned by a Reiki Master. Attunements consist of a ceremony in which the main energy line is reopened by the use of several symbols. Due to fear of misuse of energy by others, Reiki Masters tend to keep the exact method of attuning secret.
In this form there are three levels of practitioners. The highest is the Reiki Master who traditionally attunes others, gives the most powerful treatments and has received all of the known Reiki symbols.
Usui Reiki is believed to have been founded by Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk from Japan sometime in the mid 1800s. Due to a lack of records, this is the only certain fact about the history of Reiki. Much has been shrouded in mystery by early Reiki Masters.
Ever since the death of the self proclaimed Grand Master, leadership has been a source of controversy with several people claiming power.
