God knows that a common humanity, simply shared, transcends all boundaries. I think that if either you or that Muslim vendor had instead been Adam himself, and the other knowing it, then the effect would have been the same as that which you and he experienced: recognition of your common plight in this world. One mere human of another, and the other of him. That was, I believe, the spirit by which it was possible for Jesus to be a sacrificial substitute for us: by being in mind not of our sin, but of our need. Truly one of us; as recognizing, in the most implicit way, the state from which we have fallen. Whenever this is done, it attracts those who seek it, even if they do not know that they seek it.
