Jean-Louis-André-Théodore Géricault (1791 - 1824) was a French painter, largely self-taught. He exerted a seminal influence on the development of Romantic art in France; Eugene Delacroix, was profoundly influenced by Géricault. [1]

Géricault copied paintings in the Louvre and traveled to Rome, where he discovered Michelangelo's works and the exuberance of Baroque art. [2]

Théodore Géricault had a personal predilection for drama and expressive force.
