2. Some politicians complain about how people are losing their jobs to workers in China. Is this problem the result of "free trade" or "protectionism"?

A) Free trade is a contributor to this dilemma however another cause is man’s own choice. It isn’t free trade that perpetuates these problems but the executives that seek to take advantage of their fellow countrymen for their personal “bottom line” gain.

3. What is one of the primary responsibilities of the Federal Reserve Bank?

A) The Federal Reserve Bank controls the interest rates of banks which controls the flow of money.

4. Review: Suppose that after completing this course, you start a new company. In your first year, you "broke even" (had zero profits), and in your second year you want to increase your revenue and profits. After careful study of your market, you decide that you can increase your revenue by increasing your price. Therefore your good must be price elastic/inelastic (choose one).

A) A good must be elastic so that I can increase revenue with my price.

6. You can go on www.orbitz.com and watch the price of airline tickets change from day-to-day. If you pick fixed dates of travel, such as Jan. 15 to fly somewhere and Jan. 18 to return, then you will notice that the closer you get to those dates, the higher the price of the ticket usually is. In other words, the earlier in advance that you can buy a ticket, the cheaper it usually is. Explain how this illustrates a basic difference between long run and short run costs.

A) As you draw closer to an event in this case an airline flight, the later you order the tickets, more of a burden is placed on the supplier, which increases the tickets price. This is why its better to buy your tickets earlier.

7. Pick any aspect of monopolistic competition (other than problem 5 if you answered that) and explain it.

A) In a monopolistic competition firms sell slightly different goods that are not perfect substitutes to each other. This makes perfect competition impossible.

Leonard G

1.) The answer is C.

3.) The primary responsibility for the Federal Reserve Bank is to protect the United States’s bank system from collapsing by managing the whole system.

4.) The good must be elastic if I am able to increase my revenue along with the good’s price.

5.) A monopolistic competitive firm has a good that sells at a price that is higher than marginal cost to maximize profits , making it different from a perfectly competitive firm which has a good that sells at a price as close as possible to marginal cost to maximize profits. So the answer is C.

6.) Planning in the long run usually will save you money, while last minute purchases (the short run) will usually make you waste money. This occurs with airfare, because as the date of the flight comes closer, more people have purchased airfare for that flight, therefore decreasing the supply which in turn increases the price of the ticket.

7.) One aspect of monopolistic competition I believe some people do not understand is that there are almost no barriers of entry. A new firm can easily enter the market if their product that can partially substitute another companies product.

Economics Homework Six
Leonard G

1.) Fixed costs can be easily identified by seeing what the total costs are when the output is zero. Variable cost are identified as the costs that help increase your output.

2.) The former economics student would say to her boss that his plan would fail because there is diminishing marginal returns of scale in the restaurant. This would happen because more waitresses would distract and get in the way of one another, causing time to be wasted.

3.) An example of a "short run" cost for a student would be “cramming” information the day before a test. An example of a "long run" cost for a student would be taking time during the week to peacefully and efficiently study for the test.

4.) My marginal product for my mechanics’ shop would be 3 units and my marginal cost would be $4. The minimum on average that I would need to charge my customers for fixing their car would be $4 dollars.

5.) By going to college to get a degree, you save yourself a great amount of money in the long run. Sure, you might be looking at a steep amount of money to go to college, but think about what you’re going to do when you graduate. You will have a great job that pays way in a good position over the entry level job positions that does not require a college degree. The long run is better than the short run because in the short run, you would have thought that you were saving yourself money by not going to college and getting a low wage management job at the local mall.

6.) If I spent one million dollars to build a factory, and another million dollars for materials and labor and electricity to make 50 cars, my fixed cost would be the first one million dollars, my a average variable cost would be $20,000, and my average total cost would be $40,000. If it costs me $18,000 to make a 51st car, my marginal cost would be $18,000.

7.) If the annual license fee for my taxicab increased from $1,000 to $1,200, my marginal cost would increase, my average variable cost would stay the same, and my average total cost would increase.

Economics Homework 4
Leonard G.

1.) A consumer’s overall satisfaction is expressed in economics as his total utility.

2.) If you buy the sports car for $9,000, and you were willing to pay $10,000 for it, you consumer surplus would be $10,000 - $9,000 = $1,000. The consumer surplus is the net benefit a consumer has from buying a good.

3.) To maximize marginal utility in my day, I would spend the first two hours biking, starting my marginal utility at 18 units. Then, I would go home and spend the last three hours reading some of my favorite novels leaving me at a total marginal utility of 33 units. The reason I portioned my day is so that I could get the most out of my time; when my marginal utility would have decreased to 5 units marginal utility after two hours of biking, I switched over to reading which had 6 units of marginal utility and only declined at a rate of 1 unit per hour.

4.) If I relied on the “market” instead of my personal preferences when buying the car, I would ask the dealer for a lower price because the marginal utility of the car has decreased because it has been driven for 100 miles already.

5.) The shape of an indifference curve is perfectly straight for two goods that are perfect substitutes for each other because the consumer utility never changes when substituting one good for another. The utility is constant for perfect substitutes.

6.) The “substitution effect” starts off when the price a good increases. Since people do not want to pay the higher price, the substitute of the item starts to sell more due to its lower price. As a result the demand for the good with the higher price decrease as the demand for the lower priced substitute increases.

7.) I believe that a successful free market is based on the foundation of charity because charity has an “unhindered” way of working and the free market literally has the same concept. The most successful free markets are the ones without hindrances such as transaction costs and government regulation

Economics Homework Three
Leonard G

1.) One example of a good that has a large price elasticity is digital music. When a person goes to purchase a song on iTunes and they find out the price for a song went up ten cents, there is a huge decrease in demand.

2.) Income elasticity is a concept of change in elasticity when a person’s income changes. When a person’s income increases, he is able to buy the higher priced items on the market, such as the latest Mac computer instead of the lower priced Dell computer.

3.) A nearly perfect elastic demand curve is almost completely vertical in shape; a nearly perfect inelastic demand curve is almost completely horizontal in shape.

4.) The term “necessity” is given to a good that has a price elasticity of less than one because people need to have this item to help them live. These items will sell at almost any price because they are so important. Some necessities on the market are gas, food, and clean water. The term “luxury” is given to a good that has a price elasticity of more than one because these items are not needed to help us survive. When the price increases on a luxury item, the demand will decrease. Some luxuries on the market are iPods, sports cars, and video games.

5.) A substitute for french fries is potato chips. A complement for french fries is a soft drink.

6.) A normal good is one that has a positive income elasticity; it’s demand increases as income increases. An inferior good is one that has a negative income elasticity; it’s demand decreases as income increases.

7.) A price ceiling that is set below the equilibrium in a free market price will cause a shortage. This happens because the equilibrium is above the price ceiling, thus forcing the good to be sold at a lower price which in turn causes the quantity of supply to decrease. As you can see on the chart in the lecture, the price ceiling causes the shortage because the quantity supplied is less than the quantity demanded.

Switchfoot is an American rock band that originated from San Diego, California. This band is made up of five skillful musicians that have played music all their lives. The members of the band are Jon Foreman, Tim Foreman, Drew Shirley, Jerome Fontamillas, and Chad Butler. Switchfoot is a critically acclaimed Christian rock band that has toured over the entire world, attracting hundreds to each show. They are known for their energetic as well as spiritual performances.

History
The Early Years
Switchfoot began as small band in 1996 and were known as Chin Up. The band’s singer and guitarist was Jon Foreman, the bassist was Tim Foreman, and the drummer was Chad Butler. After performing at local shows, they were contacted by Charlie Peacock, the owner of the indie record label, Re:think Records. Soon after, Chin Up signed to Re:think Records under the current band name, Switchfoot. Quickly the band released three albums, The Legend of Chin, New Way to Be Human, and Learning to Breathe. Out of the three, Learning to Breathe became the most popular, becoming certified gold, and later received a Grammy nomination for best rock gospel album. Also, the song “Only Hope” from their first album was featured in the movie A Walk to Remember. The song became recognized across the country and helped them sign to a new record label known as Columbia Records/SonyBMG.

The Beautiful Letdown
Soon the band was back in the studio to record and release their new album, The Beautiful Letdown, in 2003. The album also had additional guitars and keyboard from Switchfoot’s new member, Jerome Fontamillas. The Beautiful Letdown marked the change the band was making from lo-fi, indie rock sound to a more layered and synth sound. Switchfoot’s new sound helped them attain worldwide attention and soon became immensely popular. The Beautiful Letdown has since then became double platinum, selling more than 2.6 millions copies

Nothing Is Sound
After touring for two years, the band announced that they were going back to the studio to record a new album. Along with this, the band announced they had a new guitarist, Drew Shirley, who had worked with them on tour as an additional guitarist. Nothing Is Sound was released on September 13, 2005. With additional guitars from Shirley, Nothing Is Sound became a guitar driven record with a darker and harder sound than Switchfoot’s previously released albums. Nothing Is Sound debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and contained the hit singles “Stars” and “We Are One Tonight.” However, the original release of the CD was tainted because it contained Sony’s “Extended Copy Protection,” a malicious program that installed itself on one’s computer when played. But soon, the CDs were recalled and new CDs were releases without the questionable software.

Oh! Gravity
Soon after, Switchfoot was once again in the studio, recording their new album, Oh! Gravity. The album entered the Billboard chart at #18 and peaked at #1 on iTunes’s top album chart. This album brought Switchfoot back to their lo-fi, indie rock roots and sounded more like their first album. Oh! Gravity touched on the topics of living, time, death of a loved one, but focused primarily on materialism. This album included the singles “Dirty Second Hands,” “Oh! Gravity,” and “Awakening.” A year after the release of Oh! Gravity, Switchfoot announced on August 10, 2007 that they would be leaving Columbia Records so they could release music as an individual band. Jon Foreman said that there were no hard feelings between the two and they enjoyed the time with Columbia Records. Later, the band opened up their own record label under the name of lowercase people records.

Current
After Switchfoot announced their new record label, they started to build their own studio in their hometown, San Diego, California. It was completed in spring, 2008 and soon after, Switchfoot started to record new songs. The first song to be recorded at the new studio was “This Is Home,” for the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Currently, Switchfoot is in the studio, recording their new album Hello Hurricane, which is to be released in 2009. However, due to the mass amounts of songs Switchfoot has written, the band also announced that they will follow up the release of Hello Hurricane with another new album called Vice Verses. This album is set for release in 2010. Today, Switchfoot is touring the United States and continuing to make their music known.

Charities
Switchfoot is also part of many organizations and charities worldwide. Some of these organizations are Habitat for Humanity, To Write Love On Her Arms, Invisible Children, DATA, and the One Campaign. Switchfoot has also started their own organization known as “lowercase people,” drawing attention to social issues worldwide. In addition, lowercase people has a quarterly online magazine that features notable artists of all type. Art featured in this online magazine is usually sold in lowercase people’s online store as shirts, prints, stickers, and other accessories. The profit made from the merchandise is put into the lowercase people’s Justice Fund, which helps aid third-world communities. One example of lowercase people’s activity is their involvement with a small children’s choir in Africa called Kuyasa Kids. The members of the choir are orphaned children who are infected with AIDS. In 2004, lowercase people helped the Kuyasa Kids release a CD which would help the kids obtain an education.

Fans
Switchfoot is also very much involved with their fans. They have formed their own fan club, known as Friends of the Foot, and have released several videos of themselves on the road as a podcast. As a member of the fan club, one also gets special treatment. This includes early entry and a time of to a meet and greet with the band at headlining concerts, discounts off merchandise, and special updates on the band. Switchfoot also involved the fans while recording their album Oh! Gravity by setting up a webcam in the studio. They even held a contest to see who would play a cowbell for one of the songs being recorded.

The members of the band are Jon Foreman, Tim Foreman, Drew Shirley, Jerome Fontamillas, and Chad Butler. == History ==

Quickly the band released three album, The Legend of Chin, New Way to Be Human, and Learning to Breathe.

World History Homework 11
Leonard G.

1.) The ‘Great War’ was another name for World War I. The reason WWI was called this at the time was because of two reasons. First, the war was great in size, with Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy on one side; and Russia, France, Britain, and the United States of America on the other. Secondly, this was the only “world war” at this time.

2.) In the end, no one won World War I. With mass amount of casualties on both sides, the loss was greater than any gain on either side. Also, the great fine put on Germany outraged Germans causing an anger that helped start World War II.

3.) My favorite battle in WWI was the battle at Somme. Britain had a great strategy of “shelling” Germany, and then rushing them. Unfortunately, the Germans had built up great defenses and were protected from the bombs and gunfire in the early stages of Britain’s attack. Germany quickly got back on their feet and wiped out the British, causing the worst day in British history.

5.) One aspect of science and art in the early 20th Century was the discovery of quantum mechanics. This discovery, I believe, is very important because it led the way for the development of electronics.

H1.) I prefer Captain John Smith’s saying regarding “work” over Leon Trotsky’s saying. When Smith said, “He that will not work shall not eat,” he probably didn’t realize he was starting the development of imperialism and one of the key concepts of the United States today.

H5.) My view on America entering WWI is split. If I lived back when the war was occurring, I would have not put so many American lives on the line. On the other hand, after seeing all the help the U.S. gave, I believe that America joining the war was a good idea. However, the outcome of the war was not beneficial in any way and casualties were very high.

World History Homework 10
Leonard G

1.) The Industrial Revolution was from 1760 to 1840 and was located in Western Europe in addition to some of the American colonies.

2) Two of my favorite scientists from the 1800s were Louis Pasteur and Thomas Edison. Louis Pasteur amazes me with his passion for science and God. Thomas Edison does the same with his amazing talent. His invention of the phonograph impresses me because he was nearly deaf when he created it!

3.) I believe the Industrial Revolution was a great time of inspiration. It helped inspire many to put their own ideas out into the world and change it through inventions. The spark that the Industrial Revolution created helped inventions such as the steam boat, the telephone, and the railroad.

4.) An example of nationalism would be in 1831, Giuseppe Mazzini argued to unify Italy into one nation.

5.) Imperialism is when a nation tries to control or influence another, smaller nation. There were four basic patterns of European imperialism. These were to establish colonies, to establish protectorates, to have special trading privileges over a region, or to be a business owner and have influence over a region.

6.) An example of imperialism in Africa was when the Dutch started to establish settlements (see the second pattern of European imperialism) in southern Africa.

7.) It was interesting to read that Japan was previously hostile to outsiders. However, in 1543, Japan finally welcomed into their civilization some shipwrecked Portuguese sailors. Soon to follow were European Christian missionaries who brought European technology which intrigued the Japanese. However, the spread of Christianity in Japan alarmed the Japanese and soon the doors were shut to the Europeans. Finally, American Commodore Matthew Perry broke the isolation of Japan and opened it back up to trade with America, and soon to follow, Europe.

World History Homework Five
Leonard G

1.) The Five Pillars of Islam are the moral commands of Islam. These commands are to submit to Allah, pray five times a day while facing Mecca, fast for the entire month of Ramadan, give alms to the poor, and make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca in a lifetime.

2.) The difference between Islam and Christianity is that Christianity has a God that is all about love. Islam has a god that is completely about submission, and mentions nothing about love. My God teaches me to love my friends as well as my enemies. Most Muslims hate their enemies and sentence most of them to death! When comparing these two religions, love is the biggest difference between them.

3.) My favorite of the three was Charles Martel, also known as Charles the Hammer. He protected Christian Europe by destroying the Muslim invasion at the Battle of Tours.

4.) Chivalry was one of the best concepts created by feudalism in Western Europe. It has had a great impact on the world today and allows men and women to interact in a cooperative manner. Chivalry is a great way to show respect to your elders and members of the opposite sex.

5.) The difference between the Sunnis, who control Saudi Arabia, and the Shiites, who control most of Iran and Iraq, is their view on Islam. The Sunnis have a more relaxed view which is more popular to Muslims and the Shiites have a very radical view on Islam. Also, these two sects of religion could not even agree on a successor for Muhammad and had to choose two separate successors. The Sunnis chose members of the Umayyad clan while the Shiites chose Muhammad’s son-in-law, Ali.

6.) The chart on Islamic population in countries shows that the United States has the lowest Islamic population. The rest of our population is mostly Christian. This proves why Islamic nations hate the United States so much. It’s because of our low Islamic population and our high Christian population.
7.) The four major civilizations of early South America were the Teotihuacan (A.D. 100-900), a small civilization located in modern day Mexico that worshiped gods of the sun and the moon; the Maya (A.D. 300-900), one of the larger South American civilization located in Central America that and were known for their high intelligence; the Toltec (A.D. 900-1200), a civilization located in northern Mexico who lived by the sword; and the Aztec (A.D. 1200-1521), a very warlike civilization that built a magnificent city called Tenochtitlan.

World History Homework 4
Leonard G

1.) My favorite Roman emperor was Julius Caesar. He was one of history’s greatest military leaders. His flawless tactics allowed him to expand the Roman Republic to great depths. After fifty-six years of amazing leadership, he was murdered by his closest friends in a conspiracy set up by the Roman Senate.

2.) The Roman Republic (509 B.C. – 27 B.C.) was when Rome was ruled under a republic form of government. When Augustus took the throne, the Roman Empire (27 B.C. - A.D. 456) began. The Roman Empire was a time when Rome was strictly ruled by its emperors.

3.) The Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire were once part of the same state and shared their resources and government until Rome’s emperor Diocletian decided to split off from Byzantine.
The Byzantine emperor, Constantine, was a great ruler with a strong Christian faith. Byzantium is known for starting the Eastern Orthodox Church and for its Greek philosophy.

4.) Language is a very important part of a civilization. It enabled peace, government, the spread of idea, and prosperity. Latin was Rome’s jewel. It enabled complex concepts to be explained simply. Latin was such a great language, that it is even used today in science and law.

5.) Pax Romana was a time of peace and prosperity in Rome from 27 B.C. to 180 A.D.

6.) Rome’s economic crisis reminds me a lot of the economic crisis happening today. The debt the United States has today is huge. Instead of solving problems by loaning money, the United States creating more, small holes that we need to plug before they all become one big hole and causes our downfall.

7.) a.) I believe that all of the world history we have learned so far was God paving the way for Jesus. I have a strong faith in God and believe that everything, good or bad, happens for a reason. If God never protected us, the world would have been destroyed within seconds from creation. The Devil has no control over God’s plan, ever.

My favorite insight by Sun Tzu is, "To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself." This statement simply sums up by saying that defense is the most important part of a battle.

American History lecture 2 James G.

H4. Democracy is not the best form of government when war breaks out. The Peloponnesian War is an example that democracy is not the best form of government in wartime as twice the democratic progressions of Athens were not fast enough to stop the fast moving military fist of the Spartans. This resulted in the Athenians being crushed twice by the Spartans.

1. One of Alexander’s main secrets to his military success, in my opinion, was very simply that he led his troops on the front lines of battle. Many kings in the ancient world would never lead their armies personally but instead they would remain at the camp and observe, occasionally sending men to the commanders they would employ. The lack of their leader’s presence has a very negative effect on the soldiers who fight beneath them, sometimes even causing the soldiers to loose their morale or even worse question the logic of their commander. Look at the battle of Thermopylae, would the 300 Spartans fight as hard as they did if their king Leonidas didn’t chose to remain and fight along side them? Alexander chose to fight along side his men showing that he was no coward and experienced the same problems and hardships his own men had to face. Many tales were heard among the deeds of Alexander, riding into the heaviest of fights, hunting and slaying the enemy commanders and carrying the wounded out on his own horse. To his men he appeared not just as a king seeking conquest but as a brother in battle. As we go on through history you will notice that the greatest military leaders will share this trait. Examples of this are Attila, Hannibal, The Khans of Asia, George Washington, and King David.

3. When Alexander conquered the known world he would educate the people he conquered and leave them with the learning’s and the powerful language of the Greeks. The spreading of the Greek language was vital to unifying the known world and preparing the way for Christianity

4. Despite all of the scientific advancements of the Greeks they worshiped pretty laughable gods. Their gods were merely people with normal flaws of mortals. Just look at their god Zeus, according to Greek mythology he spent a lot more time sleeping with mortals than even with his wife. I could walk into a comic book store, grab an issue of Superman and he would be better than these Greek gods.

5. Aesop’s fables were marvelous examples of the power of Greek literature. They are short and straight to the point yet taught important messages about absolute truths in this world.

7. The Celts migrated into Europe around 500 B.C. and lived in tribes spreading from central Europe to western Europe till they were pushed north by the Roman Empire.

Leonard G.

1.) What I hope to accomplish in this course this year is to review world history and to have a good time while doing so.

2.) The date of the Tower of Babel interests me. To imagine a time when one language was spoken is difficult to comprehend, but if language wasn’t created by God, we would probably be speaking in primitive grunts!

3.) Hammurabi’s Code was pretty blunt with its “eye for an eye” philosophy. It is similar to the Bible in many ways, including punishment for false accusations. Hammurabi’s Code was not perfect; however, it might have been too severe at times. An example would be persecuting a person who falsely accuses someone by accident. We must learn to forgive each other for the mistakes we may make.

4) Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus. China, Mexican Olmec, and Peru are the first major empires of world history. Egypt is definitely my favorite because of their amazing intelligence. Their communication wasn’t that great, but to see such great works of architecture and leadership simply amazes me.

5.) The controversy of creation can actually be dated back to this time, even though some believe that creation actually happened millions of years ago. Creation has been one of the biggest controversies in history, puzzling even the most intelligent person.

6.) Egypt was divided into three periods, the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. I love Egyptian architecture. To imagine the geniuses that were able to design such amazing structures that would last lifetimes!

1.) My favorite period of time in history was the Revolutionary War. I enjoy reading about the struggle and commitment our forefathers had to start a new country which included religious freedoms and independence. So many battles were fought and many lives were lost, but still our forefathers had the will and desire to create what is known today as the United States of America.

2.) President Ronald Reagan and President Bill Clinton were complete opposites. President Ronald Reagan had great moral values and strong principles while President Bill Clinton was almost impeached for his lack of morality! President Ronald Reagan was brave and stood up to communism. He even helped tear down the Berlin Wall with his speech! President Bill Clinton on the other hand, never got his feet wet and was ruining our country with his unnecessary laws.

3.) The freedom to express our ideas and beliefs is one of the most important trends guiding American history. This trend created our country, runs our country, and keeps our country in check. If something goes wrong, we are able to communicate with each other about this and try to solve it without being hushed by the government. We can also share ideas that can improve our country and benefit our nation.

4.) What is the most important threat to the future of America? Cite history to support your view. The biggest threat to the future of America is our decreasing morality. With the theory of evolution, many people are reduced to believing that they are “accidental” creations that have no moral values. This is leading to the creation of new laws that allow inmoral things like same-sex marriage to become legal! I hope that my teacher’s prediction is correct, and our country becomes more conservative and notices the decreasing morality and saves us from a horrible end.

5.) A desire for starting new a life is a critical part of the connection between culture and the success of a nation. Without a want for change, a nation cannot be formed because the drive that is needed is not there. America was founded for a strong desire to have religious freedom and independence. Without this drive, America may have never been formed.

6.) Two of the greatest achievements of Ronald Reagan were Star Wars and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. Stars Wars saved countless lives and solved our MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) problem with the Soviet Union and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall was a tremendous blow on communism and ended the terror in Eastern Europe.

7.) I would say that this map was drawn in the early 1500s. At this time America was just discovered and not yet fully explored. This is why the map shows the New World as just wilderness and uncivilized. To imagine that this “uncivilized” piece of land would turn into one of the world’s richest nations!

American History Homework 12

James G

1. The Cold war was not an open war but instead a mere show of force. The two main powers in this “Cold war” were the USA and the Soviet Union. The war was simply one of the two sides trying to flex their military power in hope of intimidating the other side only to have the other side flex theirs. It soon became an out of control game of were both would make destructive weapons point them at each other and not firing for fear of the other sides counter attack.

2. America took place in two wars between 1945 and 1980. In the Korean War we were seen as the defenders of liberty. In the Vietnam War we were rushed into a conflict which we weren’t prepared for and our president at the time (Lyndon Johnson) didn’t even strive to win.

3. The effect upon our nation by Martin Luther King, Jr was truly an act of God upon America. He brought great change to our country peacefully through words not violence.

4. One of the things President Lyndon Johnson is known best for is his single handed push of the USA into the Vietnam War just to get people to like him. For the sake of popularity 58,000 American soldiers were sacrificed upon the alter of a political campaign by him.

5. The 80th Congress was very successful in limiting the power of unions which were at the time running a muck through our economy.

6. The group led by Phyllis Schlafly to stop the ERA was invaluable in stopping one of the greatest tragedies that would have befallen our country. Men and women are different. The ERA was an attempt to tear down the God blessed differences between men and women. This would result in terrible consequences for our country. You can treat men and women the exact same because they aren’t the same. This can be compared to a farmer calling apples oranges and oranges apples just because the both come from trees, it simply can’t be done. The ERA wasn’t an assault upon segregation, it was a full out strike upon the two identities of God’s pinnacle of creation, man and woman.

7. The Warren Court was the court that ruled the political scene with an iron fist from 1953 to 1969. The Warren Court is most famous for holding in favor of criminals and giving them major advantages such as requiring a state to provide and pay (with our taxes) for a defense attorney.

Leonard G

1.) The main protagonists in the “Cold War” were the Soviet Union and America. The “war” lasted from 1945-1991.

2.) The Korean War and the Vietnam War were the two wars that occurred between 1945 and 1980 and caused over 50,000 American deaths. The Korean War was bloody but completely necessary. General MacArthur Inchon Invasion was very effective and returned the South Korean’s land back. The Vietnam War, on the other hand, was unnecessary and a complete failure. Too many lives were lost for nothing to be gained.

3.) The peaceful civil rights march and Rev. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech were two aspects that impressed me the most about the Civil Rights Movement. I believe it’s amazing to show the world that you can bring change through peace and God.

4.) President Lyndon B. Johnson was responsible for starting the Vietnam War. He presented false information to Congress exaggerating a story involving a conflict between the U.S. and Vietnam. As a result of this, he caused war with communistic Vietnam.

5.) The 22nd Amendment is an important part of the Constitution which was created by the 80th congress. The purpose of this amendment is to limit the presidential powers and forces the president to only serve two terms. The 80th congress saw the value in not having a supreme authority.

6.) I believe that General Douglas MacArthur was the most important person between 1945 and 1980 because he ended the Korean War amazingly with the Inchon invasion and kept communistic North Korea from taking over South Korea.

7.) The Warren Court was in charge of the US Supreme Court in the 1960s. It was corrupt because the Warren Court extended judicial powers too far by applying the Bill Of Rights against the States. It also extended the rights of the Supreme Court and created many new constitutional rights. This expanding of the Supreme Court caused the removal of prayer in public schools.

American History Homework 11
Leonard G.

1.) One very important value in studying History is learning from the past. Events from the past are examples of the outcome of many ideas. If the idea had a negative outcome, then we should not repeat it, but if it had a good turnout, then we should follow through with the idea and perhaps it would have a rippling effect to spur more ideas in our current day.

2.) I believe the United States entered World War II at the right time. If we entered earlier, then more lives would have been lost with little outcome. If we entered later, more attacks on the nation would have occurred and countless civilian’s lives would have been lost.

3.) I believe that the slow restrictions of immigration in the 1850s by signing bills like the Chinese Restriction Act were good ways to stop overpopulation. At the time, overpopulation was a problem as it was burdening on New York City. As a result of the overcrowding, people were living in extremely small apartments and could only share one bathroom with the rest of the building! These living conditions were a sign that immigration needed to be restricted.

4.) I like the development of music in the Roaring Twenties. With the creation of the jazz genre, music has been growing and growing into many other genres like alternative, blues, and punk.

5.) I believe that the New Deal, a plan by President Roosevelt to solve the Great Depression, began with good intentions but had an opposite outcome, similar to that of the Prohibition. I would have done things differently by asking Americans to help their neighbors and ask local charities to help out and sponsor events. America as whole would learn to embrace the hardship and get through the rough times together.

6.) I believe that dropping the atomic bombs on Japan was the only way to end the war quickly enough. This is due to the fact that the Japanese would have never quit fighting due to their beliefs.

The music was so foreign to them it made them frantic" Is this dehumanizing treatment banned by the Geneva Convention, and if not, should it be?

:I suspect the detail about the kind of music was mentioned to make the treatment sound more ludicrous and less cruel. If you can encourage people to joke about whether rap music is torture, you're deflecting attention from the general character of the treatment itself.

:I suspect that the significance of the music's being "foreign" is that the patterns to it are unfamiliar, and it would be preceived as unpredictable noise rather than as music.

:What volume level was it played at? Was the real point to induce sleep deprivation?

:If you played "music" to me at 110 db, continuously, it wouldn't really matter whether it was rap, Balinese Gamelan music, or Khachaturian's Sabre Dance, it would deprive me of sleep.

:But if you say "they were subjected to intense noise" it sounds like it could be torture, whereas if you say "they were subjected to rap music," it sounds like a joke. Dpbsmith 21:23, 23 April 2007 (EDT)

::What he said. I was too lazy to type it myself. As far as "torture" or banning under the GC (as if we'd pay attention to such "outdated concepts"), once you reach a certain volume level, which is easy to do in small cinder block rooms, it's not only not "music", it's simply a physical assault - it causes permanent damage, for instance. Human 00:21, 24 April 2007 (EDT)

:::Well at what point it causes permanent brain damage is debatable... RobS 00:37, 24 April 2007 (EDT)

::::Who said anything about brain damage? The effect of prolonged exposure to high sound pressure levels (for varying times and SPLs) is well documented - on the ears.

:::::Point taken. I amend my statement. RobS 10:04, 24 April 2007 (EDT)

If it is, why do people listen to it? JessicaS

:Songs by Barney the Dinosaur were also used in this capacity. While cultural barriers rendered this technique mainly ineffective at Guantanamo Bay, if this were to be used against Americans I would expect it to be a powerful coercive weapon. --Jeremiah4-22 14:21, 2 May 2007 (EDT)
As JessicaS above said, people wouldn't listen to it if it was torture. Although, I do find it rather funny that it has been used as a weapon against hostage-takers etc. SavedByGod 12:39, 13 January 2008 (EST)
