The Second World referred to the communist industrialized nations of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The Third World referred to the non-industrialized poor nations of the world. After the end of the Cold War, the term has fallen out of use with the terms Global North or Developed Countries replacing it.

Although the Reagan administration supported the brutal military dictatorship in El Salvador throughout the 80s, it was actually Carter who began funding the anti-Communist military dictatorship. Liberals frequently criticize Reagan for this support (and rightly so) but often forget (or ignore) Carter's crucial role in that support.
