General '''Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte''' (1915–2006) was a Chilean soldier and politician who served as Chile's head of state from 1973 to 1990. He came to power as a member of a council of military leaders after the overthrew of the government of President [[Salvador Allende]] on 11 September 1973. Allende, a radical Marxist, had gained power after getting a 36% plurality of the popular vote in 1970, but he had been accused of violating the Chilean constitution and condemned for his conduct by the Chilean legislature and by civil society organizations. As a result of this, the United States government saw Allende as a threat to their interests so they orchastrated a coup with the assistance of the Chilean military and installed General Augusto Pinochet, a ruthless military dictator, on September the 11th, 1973.

General Pinochet headed a military government for 16 years (1974-1990) as he fought and defeated [[communist]] opponents in Chile. Pinochet was at one time a military subordinate of [[Salvador Allende]]. After the [[coup]], Pinochet saw support from [[America]].

General Pinochet instituted free market reforms in Chile in the 1970s that resulted in lower [[inflation]] and an economic boom from 1976 to 1979. He held a [[plebiscite]] on his rule and 75% of the people affirmed their support for him. However, the plebiscite is widely regarded as fraudulent. The Pinochet government is alleged to be one of the most repressive in the Americas. In addition, over a quarter million Chileans were arrested. Universities were purged, books burned, and rival political parties banned. A new constitution was adopted in Chile in 1981, which authorized General Pinochet to serve as president for another eight-year term, to be followed by a plebiscite on his presidency.

Pinochet moved Chile into a market economy, privatizing many inefficient government businesses, and opening the country to foreign investment. The stability that his government gave encouraged foreign investors to come to Chile. He also started one of the first [[private pension accounts]] pension systems in the world, which has been highly successful.

As promised, President Pinochet held another plebiscite in October 1988 on the issue of whether he should continue as president. He was defeated by a vote of 55-43%, and subsequent free elections were won by the [[Christian]] Democrat Patricio Aylwin, who was installed as president on March 11, 1990.

In 1998, Pinochet was arrested in [[London]] pursuant to a warrant issued in [[Spain]] for [[human rights]] violations during his time as Chilean president. Pinochet was subsequently returned to Chile on grounds of ill health, where he was indicted and charged with [[kidnapping]] 19 supporters of Salvador Allende during the 1973 coup in which Pinochet took power. It is well-known that this site has been the target of liberal-left vandalism, at several levels.

One method is to write up false, but superficially-plausible entries. If this sort of thing is done right, and sparingly, then we can salute the skill of the prankster, and have a laugh at ourselves. (And, of course, correct the entry.) Such was the case with the entry on [[cacti]].

The send-up has an honorable history, and we are then given license to practice it on the Left. (The classic case of this, of course, is the delicious "[[Sokol Hoax]]", which should have destroyed the credibility of the post-modernists forever. And all the better that the authors of the hoax were themselves liberals -- hats off to them.)

However, crude attempts at this sort of thing only reveal the intellectual poverty of the perpetrators, and the entry on the Contras, obviously a fake, is one such. Of course Leftists are angry at Ronald Reagan, the destroyer of so many of their dreams.

And his great crime in the subject under discussion was in forcing the [[Nicaragua]]n government to hold free elections, with the usual results.

Maybe something needs to be put in about the Boland Amendment? Why do you people lie about the facts. The Contras were a brutal, totalitarian, right wing, terrorist organization who committed gross violations of human rights. No one says the Sandinistas were perfect but you try to cover up the crimes of the Contras. I have no problem with people criticizing left wing monsters like Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao. But when people criticize right wing monsters like Pinochet, Somoza, and the Contras, it is chalked up to being "leftist propaganda". :The article doesn't seem to be a glowing review of the Contras, and, in fact, is quite harsh in some areas. You'll find on a whole that the use of the word genocide in these situations isn't going to help your cause. What happened in Germany during World War II was genocide. What happened in Armenia during World War I was genocide. In modern usage, the term is thrown around so much in such a watered down form that it is insulting to those who were true victims of systematic extermination. In the U.S. Civil war, both the north and the south had cases of atrocities. But no one would say that the north was committing genocide on the south or the south was committing genocide on the north. The Contras have been blasted by mainstream human rights organizations such as Amnesty International. To say that their abuses were merely communist propaganda is terribly biased.
