When the French and British fought, the French usually won because the British had Bright red coats and stayed in traditional formation, so they were easily seen and shot down. Later the British turned their coats inside out and covered them in clay. This helped a great deal and the British acquired all the land the French held except [[Louisiana]], which went to [[Spain]]. The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763. This ended the Seven Years' War.

The '''Battle of Passchendale''' was also known as the Third Battle of Ypres. This third battle was fought in Ypres, [[Belgium]] which had seen two previous battles, one in 1914 and one one 1915. The Third Battle of Ypres lasted 18 months beginning in 1917. In this battle the [[United Kingdom|British]] hid 19 huge land mines underneath the [[Germany|German]] lines. Unfortunately once the land mines exploded the British did not move fast enough and became bogged down by the ensuing rain. This battle ended as another failure for the Allies.

Ashoka was Emperor of the Mauryan Empire of India between 273 and 232 BC. After he succeeded in war, he was upset by its horrors and became a great advocate of Buddhism. He displayed tolerance towards all religions and helped erect shrines to Hinduism and Jainism, another religion of India. He elevated the status of women, who were already highly respected under the Hindu culture. In Buddhism women could become monks. He also promoted trade with the expanding Roman empire to his West, and the growing Han dynasty in China to his East. After Ashoka died, the empire fell into civil war, and became vulnerable to outside invaders, such as the Bactrian Greeks in the second century B.C. and the Buddhist Kushan in 100 B.C. A council of Buddhist monks was convened under Kanishka to regulate Buddhism, and the result was Mahayana Buddhism.

Ashoka is considered to be one of the greatest rulers in world history. Writer [[H.G. Wells]] said about Ashoka, "In the history of the world there have been thousands of kings and emperors who called themselves 'their highnesses,' 'their majesties,' and 'their exalted majesties' and so on. They shone for a brief moment, and as quickly disappeared. But Ashoka shines and shines brightly like a bright star, even unto this day."

Perhaps the most important event in the history of Buddhism was the conversion of Ashoka Mauryan, the Indian emperor (269-232 B.C.). He chanced to meet Nigrodha, a Buddhist monk, who convinced him to devote his life to peace. Ashoka caused thousands of rock pillars to be erected, engraved with the teachings of Buddha. This was the first time Buddhist teachings were recorded.

Young Plan

The Young Plan was the plan that replaced the Dawes Plan in 1929. In 1929 the Wall Street Crash created problems for the German economy and Owen D. Young was asked by the Allied Reparations Committee to investigate the situation. What Young suggested is that the total amount of reparations should be reduced to around three-quarters. In this way Germany would make annual payments till 1988. All governments but Germany accepted Young’s plan. It was criticized by positions in the right wing. These included Adolf Hitler and Alfred Hugenberg. When unemployment in Germany grew in 1931, payments were suspended and a year later the payments were cancelled.

Gingrich served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, and is generally credited with being the mastermind of the morality-based Republican Revolution of 1994. In 1962, Gingrich married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old; she was seven years his senior at 26 years old. They had two daughters together.

Gingrich divorced Jackie Battley in 1980. Battley has charged that Gingrich discussed the terms of their divorce settlement while she was in the hospital after cancer surgery. According to L.H. Carter, his campaign treasurer, Newt said of Battley: "She's not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of the President. And besides, she has cancer." He refused to pay alimony or child support.

Gingrich married Marianne Ginther in late 1981. Marianne was quoted in a 1995 article in Vanity Fair as saying: "I don't want him to be president and I don't think he should be."They divorced in 1999, the same year Gingrich had an extramarital affair with a then 33-year old member of his Congressional staff, Callista Bisek. This happened during the same time Newt Gingrich was condemning President Bill Clinton for his affair with a staffer Monica Levinsky. Newt Gingrich refused to discuss the affair until he admitted it in March, 2007. According to several newspaper editorials, the electability of Gingrich for president is more than questionable, especially on a Republican party ticket — with a party that emphasizes family values and Christianity as some of their strongest assets.

In August 2000, Gingrich married Bisek. Gingrich resides in Virginia with Bisek, who appears with him on the back cover of his book "Winning the Future".

The Gingrich family includes two daughters, two sons-in-law, and two grandchildren.
