Maybe I'm missing something here, but what on earth is the problem with Nice biscuits? Does this have some strange double meaning of which I'm unaware? OK they don't sell them in the US (except in English food shops) but they're a long-standing favourite in the UK.
The origins of the word biscuit ("twice-cooked") should be mentioned, as should the technical and legal difference between a biscuit and a cake (the former goes soft when stale, the latter goes hard). Also, why is there a picture of a scone on the page? Does this reflect colonial usage?DDWatkinsIII 08:13, 30 April 2007 (EDT)

DoonTheWater: /* Sheep in popular culture */

Sheep are woolly herbivorous ungulates, that are farmed in many places for their wool, their fleeces, their meat and sometimes their milk. Male sheep are called rams or tups, female sheep are ewes, baby sheep are lambs.

While traditionally thought to be of limited intelligence there are wild (as yet unproven) stories of sheep being able to navigating obstacles designed to hinder their movements.

Sheep farming is particularly important in New Zealand, Australia and many parts of the United Kingdom, especially Wales and the wild borderlands of Scotland.

Wild Sheep
Wild varieties of sheep are found in many mountainous regions worldwide. Full species include the bighorn sheep of North America, the mouflon of Sardinia and Corsica, and the aoudad of North Africa. Herds of feral sheep are also known, such as the Soay sheep of certain Scottish islands, believed to have lived wild since the Bronze Age. Herdwick sheep are unique to the English lake District, Cumbria.

Sheep in the Bible
Sheep are mentioned many times in the Bible, and Christians are frequently likened to sheep of whom God is the shepherd, most notably in Psalm 23:
<blockquote>
1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.<br />
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.<br />
(KJV)
</blockquote>

Note: This does not mean that Christians are required to be sheepish.

America and sheep
American cuisine is noted for the absence of lamb and mutton dishes, and sheep are not widely farmed, perhaps because the idea of a sheep ranch might be perceived as undermining the national 'frontier' self image.

Sheep in popular culture
Sheep are often used as a metaphor for unthinking followers of any particular ideology. George Orwell used them in this way in his novel Animal Farm when the sheep could be counted on to back up the animal revolution led by the pigs by baaa-ing Four legs good, two legs bad when required.

Scotland is the second largest country of the United Kingdom; about three-eighths the size of its larger neighbour England, but is much less populous; most of the population lives in the central belt, a band accross central Scotland between the capital Edinburgh and the city of Glasgow.
Scotland includes the island groups of Orkney, Shetland, the Inner & Outer Hebrides, the islands of the Clyde Estuary including Arran, Bute, Cumbrae & wee Cumbrae and various other smaller islands.
Union with England
After the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1603, James VI of Scotland ascended to the Throne of England, becoming James I of England. He was the first monarch to call himself King of Great Britain. This is referred to as the Union of the Crowns. James was also at this time King of Ireland.

The Parliaments of Scotland and England were not united until 1707 and it is this date that is recognized as the formation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. This is referred to as the Union of the Parliaments. The formation of the Irish Republic in 1922 resulted in the current name of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

:*Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. The "Poem" is an ode to secularism and minimizes their demise by equating their tragic deaths with other causes and tragedies, involving one thousand times the number of people.
: The poem is a political, self-serving rant by a University that should have taken meaningful steps to prevent this massacre. The English Department that educated this killer should be scrutinized and this poem is the best place to start. Ideas do matter, and unless the mistakes are identified here than the sacrifice of innocent lives will inevitably and needlessly occur again. We owe to the victims and to future students to look critically at the University's role in allowing this massacre to happen.--Aschlafly 09:10, 21 April 2007 (EDT)

::And this site's response (plastered all over the front page) isn't also political and self-serving? This smacks of hypocrisy somewhat. The lack of compassion that you're showing here is also rather distasteful. --Jeremiah4-22 12:59, 21 April 2007 (EDT)

So, there is an student at VT english department who mourns his fellow students and decides to write a poem for them. Rest of the department honors the victims by publishing it on their web page. Then there is Conservapedia, which instead of mourning or respecting the feelings of the survivors starts to bash the poem as too liberal and not christian enough. This kinda sickens me. Im not even going to say anything more about the critisism itself, exept what does it matter, even if the writer was an liberal atheist, arent they allowed to mourn and write about their feelings? Do you really think she wrote it to be an political statement? What if others would act the same? If you where one of the survivors, would you like to read some atheist bashing your poem written to the wictims to be too christian or mayby pushing concervative agenda? Timppeli 09:47, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
:The "poem" expressed many political opinions and very few feelings. I do not see how it could even be considered poetry, other than the fact that it was formatted as blank verse.

:Moreover, not all "feelings" are worthy of unconditional respect and approval. The incident was the "expression" of feelings of rage by a very disturbed individual.
::This is an poem, written by an student who might have been there at the time of the shootings, very least she knew some of the people killed. You take her poem, try to find hidden liberal agenda from it, for example the mentioning of elephants and ivory... Give me a break, you really think she wrote the poem to help the wildlife?, and then without even knowing her religios views you bash her for not mentioning God or including a prayer. And then you justify it by saying that her attempt to show her grief isn't an opinnion worth respecting? That is just outrageous. Timppeli 10:56, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
I don't care if it's political, or good poetry, but they deserve respect & compassion, not politicization. Criticizing them is another of Andy's attempts to score points off of a tragedy. ::::Free speech comes with responsibility. If we here on this site are indeed doing something wrong, then be constructive about it, show us where, and offer suggestions as to improving it...don't be destructive! We most certainly do not come into your house and rant and rave about how your house looks and expect to get away with it under the guise of free speech. Karajou 15:14, 21 April 2007 (EDT)

Can I suggest that someone offer a definition of free speech? I think, from reading this debate that both sides are operating under a very different definition of the term, and I suspect that if it were clear what both sides mean by the term there might be less disagreement. Those criticizing the posting of the poem see the post as an abuse of the free speech of those who posted it and see themselves as using their free speech to correct this wrong, those defending the posting of the poem see the posting of the poem as a use of free speech and the criticism of it as an attempt at censorship and/or an abuse of free speech. (I intend that to be descriptive of the broad positions I am seeing advanced here, not as an attempt at a definition) I hope/believe that if everyone understood what the other side meant by free speech this argument could become a discussion.--Reginod 15:44, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
Let's please not get off-topic.
#First of all, on the main page, it is listed as the "official reponse" of the English department. This is plainly not true. This is a poem that Nikki Giovani, an extremely famous poet, said. The English Department just printed it on their webpage, that's all. Take that down.
#"Denies accountability" Are you suggesting that the English department might be accountable for the events that transpired? Are you seriously suggesting that?
#"Environmentalism" Of course, not wanting Elephants killed for their ivory is indeed environmentalism, but come on, she's not trying to push that killing elephants is bad. I'm not completely sure what she's doing, but it's definitely not pushing liberalism.
#"anti-Bush" No. It's not anti-Bush. It's just anti-war. That's all it is, and if it's indirectly criticising Bush because he invaded Iraq, then that's fine, put "anti-war", but don't put "anti-Bush."
#"environmentalism" Okay, this is really stretching. Destabalized land is bad, that's fairly standard. I don't think that anyone here is for destabalizing land.
I honestly don't see anything that's agenda-pushing for anything majorly liberal, and they definitely aren't hijacking the shootings like they might have Coretta King's funeral.
Not only that, but you have to remember: this is one person. Just one poet. She doesn't represent every liberal in the world, and therefore, if she does something bad (which she hasn't), you can't look at it and say "oh, look what the liberals are doing now." K, i'm done.
Scotland is the second largest country of the United Kingdom; about three-eighths the size of its larger neighbour England, but is much less populous; most of the population lives in the central belt, a band accross central Scotland between the capital Edinburgh and the city of Glasgow.

Scotland includes the island groups of Orkney, Shetland and the Inner & Outer Hebrides.

Fame
Scotland is famous for its disproportionate amount of inventions and discoveries (as immortalised in Wha's Like Us), its world class universities, the Scottish Enlightenment, being the first country to adopt English as its official language decades before Englandfact, being the one of the first industrial nations while still preserving some of the last great wildernesses of Europe, and being the home of golf and the Loch Ness Monster.

The symbol of Scotland is the thistle. The Scottish flag is the Cross of St. Andrew, a white diagonal cross on a dark blue background. The design originated in the 9th century and it is the oldest national flag still in use anywhere in the world. Other things associated with the country are kilts (tartan skirts worn by Scotsmen), and the haunting music of the bagpipes. Famous Scottish products include pies, haggis and Scotch whisky.

Scotland has it's own Parliament of 129 members as well as sending 59 MPs to represent its interests in the United Kingdom parliament which sits in London. Scottish MPs have historically been recognized for their political skills and appointed to the Cabinet in larger numbers than would be proportionate for their numbers.

Scotland's motto is Nemo me impune lacessit ("No-one provokes me with impunity") which translates as Wha daur meddle wi me in Scots.
The UK, Ireland, Iceland, and Denmark, have been bickering for years regarding territorial rights, as Rockall sits on the Rockall Bank, a massive sea bank which geologists believe may contain significant amounts of natural gas and oil. Added to this are the lucrative fishing grounds surrounding the island. All this makes Rockall a highly coveted prize.
John Ridgeway and Tom McLean during the 1980s perched themselves at the very summit of Rockall's highest mountain and remained there for one month in order to protest and validate Rockall's right to be an island.

Hwerdwick sheep are unique to the English lake Ditrict, Cumbria.

Sheep in the Bible
Sheep are mentioned many times in the Bible, and Christians are frequently likened to sheep of whom God is the shepherd, most notably in Psalm 23:
<blockquote>
1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.<br />
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.<br />
Note: This does not mean that Christians are required to be sheepish.

American and sheep
American cuisine is noted for the absence of lamb and mutton dishes, and sheep are not widely farmed, perhaps because the idea of a sheep ranch might be perceived as undermining the national 'frontier' self image.

Sheep in the Bible
Sheep are mentioned many times in the Bible, and Christians are frequently likened to sheep of whom God is the shepherd, most notably in Psalm 23:
<blockquote>
1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.<br />
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.<br />
(KJV)
</blockquote>

Note: This does not mean that Christians are required to be sheepish.

American and sheep
American cuisine is noted for the absence of lamb and mutton dishes

The current capital of Scotland. There is controversy over the origins of the name Edinburgh, which may derive from King Edwin of Northumbria (Edwins-burgh, burgh being the Northumbrian and later Scots word for fort or town) or from the earlier Gaelic 'Dunedin'.

Edinburgh has a population of around half a million souls. It is the home of the Scottish parliament, the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and the world's largest annual arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival.

The city is also a centre of commerce, education, and food processing. Natives of Edinburgh are called 'Edinburgers'. The unofficial motto of the city is "You'll have had your tea" which is a reference to the unofficial motto of their great rival Glasgow - "Your tea's oot".
Edinburgh has two football clubs Hibernian FC (nickname: the Hibees) and Heart of Midlothian FC (nickname: the Jambos). Both play in the Scottish Premier League. The famous author Sir Walter Scott wrote a novel "The Heart of Midlothian" based around the early days of the club and its founder Vladimir Romanov, an exile from Tsarist Russia.
