Within the [[Atheism is a religion|atheist religion]], there are and have been a number of [[atheism|atheist]] [[cult]]s and atheist groups which have had a cultish following. Some of these cults/groups still exist today. The atheist cults or atheist groups which have had a cultish following which have formed in history or exist today are often a result of factors such as: [[utopia]]n thinking, fanatical devolution to various atheistic ideologies, a poor understanding of science/technology (or a penchant for materialist [[Pseudoscience|pseudoscientific]] thinking) and wishful thinking.

Also, although some of the groups listed below, which were founded by atheists/non-religious individuals are not entirely made up of atheists, they do have sizable atheist populations within them.

In his book ''Rivals: Conflict as the fuel of science'', Michael White wrote: "Of course today, for biologists, [[Charles Darwin|Darwin]] is second only to [[God]], and for many he may rank still higher." The atheist [[Michael Ruse]], an evolutionist science philosopher, admitted, “Evolution is a religion. This was true of evolution in the beginning, and it is true of evolution still today.”

Evolutionists primarily spread their religion via public school indoctrination and via [[Suppression of alternatives to evolution|censorship of opposing views]]. There is a small cultish following of the [[New Atheism|New Atheist]] [[Richard Dawkins]] (See: [[Richard Dawkins' cult of personality]]).

On August 16, 2014, Andrew Brown wrote an article for The Spectator entitled ''The bizarre – and costly – cult of Richard Dawkins'' which declared:

The number of Dawkian atheists has significantly diminished post [[Elevatorgate]] and due to his generally [[Abrasiveness of Richard Dawkins|abrasive manner]]. Dawkins does retain a small cult following though (See: [[Richard Dawkins' loss of influence]]). The Dawkian atheists have been able to to retain Richard Dawkins being labeled as an atheist in his [[Wikipedia]] article despite Dawkins repeatedly and adamantly declaring that he is an agnostic and/or flip-flopping his public persona between atheism and [[agnosticism]] (See: [[Richard Dawkins and agnosticism]]).

Similar cult followings surrounding other atheist activists also exist, particularly on the internet, including the late [[Christopher Hitchens]], [[Sam Harris]], [[Lawrence Krauss]], [[PZ Myers]], Phil Mason ([[Thunderf00t]]), "[[TheAmazingAtheist]]", etc.

==Scientism==
Despite the repeated claim that atheism is "not a religion", most New Atheists and anti-theists subscribe to some form of Scientism - the belief that physical science is the sole or most authoritative source of human knowledge. This belief ties in with philosophical views such as the Positivism of [[Auguste Comte]] as well as naturalism, materialism, physicalism, etc. and is a de facto religious or philosophical belief, not merely a "lack of belief". Ironically this view is actually a minority view of actual scientists historically and currently, most of whom do not belief that "nothing exists" beyond what has been observed in physical sciences (ex. mathematics is a formal science and mathematical proofs can be said to exist despite not being physical evidence which is testable in a laboratory experiment). Philosophers historically also did not state that deductive reasoning is the only valid form of reasoning for individuals to use when forming conclusions about the world around them.

The positions of many New Atheists also mirrors in many ways with the atheistic views of Marxists and socialists, such as Karl Marx himself; coincidentally many New Atheists are also secular humanists who subscribe to socialist and left-wing political views.

==Nihilism==
Nihilism is an extreme form of skepticism which essentially argues that no moral truths exist at all or can be known to exist. The views of [[Frederich Nietzsche]], [[Marquis de Sade]], and some of the views of [[Ayn Rand]] are associated with nihilism. Some argue that nihilism is the "true" conclusion of atheism; according to some philosophers and theologians such as C.S. Lewis, if one believes that moral order exists at all then this also means that God exists. If a secular humanist therefore claims that killing children is wrong whether based on "evidence" or not, then they are tacitly admitting that they know there is a God, since if atheism is taken to its true conclusion, then even if killing children causes the children pain, there is no reason to believe that causing children pain is wrong to begin with, except based on faith.

==Conflict over values==
There have been, however, a handful of prominent people whose work in Hollywood opposed these values. [[Charlton Heston]], [[Jim Caviezel]], [[Ricardo Montalban]], [[Ronald Reagan]], [[James Stewart]], [[Pat Boone]], [[Paul Schofield]], [[Lisa Whelchel]] (''The Facts of Life'' sitcom's 'Blair' who refused a role where she would be the first of Eastland's girls to become a non-virgin), [[Walt Disney]] and many others practiced conservative values while working in Hollywood and the productions of these and many others also reflect these values, irrespective of the names associated with them: ''[[The Chronicles of Narnia]]'' and ''Independence Day'' (a 1996 movie about the U.S. being attacked on [[Independence Day]]) being recent examples.

Although the social elite and studio executives of Hollywood may have held different values than [[Real America|Main Street America]], the disparity was hidden from the public. First, many film studios and actors hired publicity agents to control what lifestyle facts became known to the public. Certain personal indiscretions were considered "off-limits" to journalists and not generally reported, such as [[Marilyn Monroe]]'s connection to various [[organized crime]] and political figures.

Second, both the film studios and the television networks had codes of acceptable content. Actors who were living by Hollywood values were creating films and television programs that carefully avoid sexually explicit themes or foul language. For example, the code required that if a married couple were to be shown in a bedroom scene, they would have twin beds and would be wearing [[pajamas]].

Third, after the [[United States Supreme Court]] ruled that the [[First Amendment]] protected certain forms of literature and motion pictures that were previously considered [[pornographic]] in ''[[Miller v. California]]'' in 1973, the case law developed that applied local community standards when deciding whether a particular work was to be protected. This had the effect of decoupling national values from Hollywood values and started a race to the lowest common denominator.

Finally, over time, the media has shifted from being concentrated to being dispersed. The three major television networks ([[NBC]], [[ABC]], [[CBS]]) shifted to thousands of cable channels, and the adoption of the Internet by the general public made controlling the spread of news and the fabrication of false public images by movie studios impossible. When comparing the satisfaction brought about by faith, spirituality, family, and friendship, which may happen to include donations to a church or other organization, it is clear that the profits of Hollywood and the industries which rely upon Hollywood for profit are the true establishment—thus making traditional values truly rebellious and countercultural, and Hollywood values a lie.

I think that he is referring to the 2007 email blasts that started this. If you were to look around on the web for all the examples of massive stupidity and inappropriateness in things schoolteachers do, and put them into the [[Essay:Common Core]] article, you would run out of disk space on Conservapedia's server. There's just no limit to human stupidity, and there's no point putting examples of stupidity into the Common Core article ''unless they relate to the Common Core standards''.

I looked around at your examples. The "Ruby and the hairclip" article came from [https://jeopardylabs.com/play/reading-mastery-3rd-6-weeks-review this article, select "inference for 500"]. It's the most pathetic thing I've seen on the internet in quite a while. The [https://jeopardylabs.com https://jeopardylabs.com] website is truly awful, and the "be sure your answer is in the form of a question" garbage is just incredible. They are certainly not Alex Trebek! It's a web site where you can make your own stupid Jeopardy game thing, and then upload it so others can see it. That a teacher downloaded such a thing for his or her class is utterly pathetic in many ways. But the website has nothing to do with Common Core!

As far as I can tell from a Google search, the "Peter and Patty" story was from some kind of book titled "Daily Warm-ups, Reading, Grade 3" by Shelle Russell. (By the way, the story was pretty much cribbed from Hansel and Gretel; the author is incredibly lazy, as well as stupid.) As far as your math example from yesterday, the news article says it's from Common Core, but I'm not convinced. I need to look around some more. I Googled "breaking apart numbers", and it seems to be a real thing. As a math major, I find it appalling that people would teach it that way. It's true that you can mentally add 105+79 by saying that 79 is 1 less than 80, and 105+80 is obviously 185, so 105+79=184. I think that's what the method is about, but the example is an incredibly inappropriate one. I can't figure out what he's doing. The [http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/217018.php article you cited], says it's a common core example, giving [https://twitter.com/hoffmanrich/status/384806802262470656/photo/1 this item by Rich Hoffmann]. But it gives no evidence that that example came from Common Core; it just said that it came from a 3rd grade workbook, with no further information. It may be that Common Core does teach the "breaking apart" method, but I hope it's more like my 105+79 example rather than the garbage from that workbook.

I haven't checked out the "Constitution Day" thing in detail, but I think the fundamental point, that we have a great deal of freedom because of the Constitution, and that America is special because of this, is appropriate. It's what I was taught in school. I don't agree with their claim that the Constitution is not a piece of paper. At the time that it was signed, on September 17, 1787, it ''was'' a piece of paper. Well, quite a few pages. And it most certainly is our written plan.
