Back to the Future is a popular movie from 1985 in which the main character Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) goes back in time to 1955 with the help of his scientist friend, Doctor Emmet Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and a time machine built into a Delorean DMC-12. It led to two sequels and an animated television series. It was one of the highest grossing films of the 1980s and is still popular today. The movie was followed by two sequels.

Cultural impact of Back to the Future
This extremely popular film exerts an undeniable influence upon American culture, even being selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Values
However, the viewer should be selective in watching the film, as both positive and negative values are presented. The viewing of this film by children should be accompanied with parental guidance, highlighting which behaviors should or should not be emulated.

Negative values
*Various vulgar expressions: Biff's exclamation upon crashing into the fertilizer truck, Marty's jibe regarding Doc's concern about his future.
*Promotion of youth culture with implications of adult inferiority: when Marty's band performs a loud rock song which the judges (including rock musician Huey Lewis in a cameo role) are not "cool" enough to appreciate.
*Portrayal of chastity as a negative trait
*Premarital sexual activity: when Marty and Jennifer plan to spend the night at the lake alone

Positive values
*Dedication and friendship: Doc and Marty stick together and show genuine concern for each others' well-being.
*Health effects of alcohol and tobacco: when Marty discourages the 1955 Lorraine from smoking or drinking, saying that she might regret it, and when the 1985 Lorraine is shown suffering ill-effects from alcohol at the start of the film, but healthy and attractive at the end of the film when she has been positively influenced by "Calvin Klein"
*Disgust for deviancy: when Marty shows contempt of 1955 George's voyeurism
*Chivalry: when George defends Lorraine from Biff's attempted intimate assault
A hammer is a tool made from a square piece of metal on a (usually wooden) handle. The handle may be long or short. Hammers are used to provide a more forceful blow to an object than would be capable by hands. The weight of the (often) metal head, and the light wooden body, allows for a 'swinging' momentum to assist this. Examples of uses for the hammer include hitting nails, pounding chisels, etc.

How Hammers Work
A hammer is one example of a "simple" hand tool that is, nevertheless, not an example of a "simple machine." Although it appears at first glance to be an example of a third-class lever, a hammer will not work without a weighted head. The hammerhead is, in fact, an energy storage device. Kinetic energy is stored in the head over the relatively long time during which the hammer is being swung, then released during the much shorter time when the head strikes the nail. The force applied by the hammer is far higher than the force that is applied if the head simply rests on the nail, and cannot be calculated from lever principles. The hammer is thus one of many relatively simple hand tools that store and release energy through the use of inertia or elasticity. By converting mechanical energy into kinetic energy, it may be considered a force amplifier.

Hammers in Culture
The hammer was one part of the symbol of the Soviet Union, the hammer and sickle.
Hammers have also appeared in mythology, such as the Norse god of thunder and lighning, Thor. His hammer has a name: Mjolnir.

ChuckleVision was a long-running English comedy television show, created by and starring Paul and Barry Elliot, better known as the Chuckle Brothers. The show ran for 21 series, between 1987 and 2009.

Background
Paul (born 1944) and Barry (born 1947) Elliot were two sons of a veteran stage show performer, and the younger brothers of entertainers Jimmy and Brian Patton. After decades of stage work, and several unsuccessful attempts to break into television broadcasting, the first series of ChuckleVision was filmed and aired on BBC One in 1987. The show was instantly successful, and ran on the same channel until the brothers' retirement from the show in 2009.

Premise
Each show, which lasts 20 minutes (reduced to 15 minutes from 2001 onwards), revolves around the escapades of the Chuckle Brothers, as they attempt to complete a simple job or task, and inevitably fail miserably, with comedic results. The job is often given to them by either "No Slacking" (a character portrayed alternately by Jimmy or Brian Patton) or "Dan the Van", an often-mentioned character who is never shown on screen.

The show's humour is mainly slapstick physical comedy, or based on Paul's tendency to over-complicate simple situations, or the brother's misunderstanding of common colloquial phrases. Frequently-used catchphrases such as '"To me." "To you."' and "Oh, dear, oh, dear" are also a source of humour. Neither of the brothers show common sense for any sustained period, but despite this Paul thinks of himself of being cleverer than both his brother, and other people. Barry often sees through his brother's stupidity, but either his objections are dismissed, or he only acknowledges it with a look to the camera.

Though the show revolves mainly around the two brothers, episodes often feature a tertiary character, who the brothers attempt to assist, but end up annoying due to their incompetence.

Each episode of the show usually had a unique plot, although later in the show's history, two-episode stories became more common.

Overview

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Incorporated is a firearm company based in Southport, Connecticut. They produce rifles, shotguns, pistols and are perhaps best known for their single and double action revolvers. Currently Sturm, Ruger & Co. is the fourth largest gun manufacturer in the United States.
History

Sturm, Ruger & Co. opened for business in 1949 with a meager $50,000 investment by William B. Ruger and Alexander McCormick Sturm in a small rented machine shop.

Their first creation, the Ruger Standard, an automatic pistol shooting .22 Long Rifle rounds, was successful enough to launch the entire company. This success meant that Ruger has an almost exclusive monopoly on the .22 LR rimfire rifle market in the US. The popularity of the 10/22 semi-automatic rifle in particular has also increased Ruger's standing.

In the 1950's, spotting a hole in the market for single action revolvers, the Ruger Single Six and later Ruger Blackhawk were released. These guns, particularly the Blackhawk and its subsequent variants are well known for their classic look and use in Westerns and Cowboy Action Shooting.

Following Sturm's death in 1951, the company was owned exclusively by Ruger, until Ruger's death in 2002. From 1949 until 2004 Ruger had made over 20 million guns, with their firearms being used for hunting, target shooting, self-defense and law enforcement. Ruger guns are also highly collectible.
The skull fragment discovered in a peat bog near Hamburg was more than 36,000 years old - and was the vital missing link between modern humans and Neanderthals. This, at least, is what Professor Reiner Protsch von Zieten - a distinguished, cigar-smoking German anthropologist - told his scientific colleagues, to global acclaim, after being invited to date the extremely rare skull. However, the professor's 30-year-old academic career has now ended in disgrace after the revelation that he systematically falsified the dates on this and numerous other "stone age" relics... According to experts, his deceptions may mean an entire tranche of the history of man's development will have to be rewritten. "Anthropology is going to have to completely revise its picture of modern man between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago," said Thomas Terberger, the archaeologist who discovered the hoax. "Prof Protsch's work appeared to prove that anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals had co-existed, and perhaps even had children together.
Concept
Phonebloks is a concept conceived by Dave Hakkens for a longer lasting smartphone that consists of detachable modular "blocks" or "bloks" that comprise each component which are detachable and can be replaced upon failure or inevitable obsolescence. Hardware capabilities and battery life vary greatly depending on preferences and inevitably budget. Different blocks of different capabilities from different brands will reportedly be available.
Premise
Broken or obsolete mobile phones are one of the single biggest contributors to E-waste in the world and recycling programs have not yielded satisfactory results. Since the 2000's, complaints of technology advancing at a rate faster than society can safety adapt to have grown and virtually no mobile phones or mobile devices are upgradable or even easily repairable. In the event of hardware failure, the only hope for repair whatsoever is often a "board swapping"; a procedure in which the phone is dissected and opened up with special equipment and the "main board" and/or the main screen being replaced altogether. Such repair jobs often cost more than the phone itself, as a result, the phone is simply discarded and replaced at costs that vary from circumstance to circumstance. After all this, statistics indicate that only 8% of phones are actually recycled safely.

Phonebloks however is built on the concept of providing a longer lasting mobile phone which is designed to be repaired in the event of a component failure or to be upgraded when the user desires more up to date hardware or functionality through the use of replaceable components.
Design
Phonebloks phones consist of "blocks" which house individual replaceable components that likely include, but are not limited to:
*Screen (options appear to range from a screen alongside a physical QWERTY keyboard to a 100% touchscreen characteristic of most modern smartphones).
*Camera
*Speaker(s)
*Microphone
*Wifi chip
*Bluetooth chip
*3G/4G cellular network chip
*Battery
*RAM (random access memory)
*Hard drive (non volatile memory)
The blocks will be held sturdily in place to the main motherboard by two screws.
Future
To get the project off the ground, Dave Hakkens is trying to gain support through a crowd speaking platform named "Thunderclap" who's purpose it is to make public the world's demand for such a smartphone.

Peter Sturges Ruckman (b. 1921) is a pastor and an Independent Baptist. He wrote The Creed of the Alexandrian Cult (1978). This book denounces modern Bible translations and affirms the authority of the King James Version. Ruckman is largely responsible for the "King James Only" dispute that split fundamentalism in the 1980s.
Rev. Pasquale Di Milla (September 8, 1869 - March 18, 1940) - Father Di Milla was one of the first active Italian priests in the diocese of Boston, Massachusetts.

Pasquale Di Milla was born on September 8, 1869 in Elena in the Province of Caserta, Italy the son of Antonio and Concetta (Valardocchio) Di Milla. He was educated at the Seminary of Gaeta. He was considered a brilliant scholar. Studied in the Latin language and the writings of Virgil.

Di Milla was ordained into the priesthood in June 1892 by Archbishop Nicola Contieri. He was assigned to St. James Church in Elena and taught school there for eight years. At which point he removed to the United States and settled in Boston, Massachusetts. In Boston he was placed in charge of the Italian communicants of St. James Parish on Harrison Avenue.

Father Di Milla was so successful in his position that within three years he was able to build a new church which was dedicated on October 25, 1903 and named the Church of Our Lady of Pompeii.

He was one of a small group of people to found St. Michael's Cemetery in Boston in 1905 and remained president for over a decade starting in 1908.

As a priest he was known as being zealous in his work with the poor looking after their spiritual welfare and their material needs. He remained in charge of the Italian parish work until 1927 when because of his health he was forced to resign as a pastor.

He traveled back to Italy that same year and returned to Boston after awhile where Cardinal O'Connell assigned to various chaplaincies which kept him fairly busy. Father Di Milla even served as chaplain at Emmanuel College. His final assignment was as chaplain of Convent of Good Help in East Boston.

Father Di Milla died at St. Elizabeth's Hospital on March 18, 1940 after his prolonged illness. His funeral was held at 10 O'Clock in the morning on March 20th, at St. Lazarus Church in East Boston.
Pangolins or scaly anteaters are several species of African and Asian mammals of the order Pholidota, characterized by the presence of large scales over much of their body, the only mammals to possess such a feature.

Description
The eight living species of pangolins share a close resemblance to the New World anteaters. Pangolins are one to three feet in length excluding the tail, which in most of the species is prehensile; the long-tailed pangolin (Manis tetradactyla) has a tail twice its body length. The head is small relative to the body and conical in shape, with small eyes and ears; the long muzzle is toothless, and bears a tongue up to ten inches in length. The legs are short, bearing five, sharply-clawed toes, enabling the animal to pry apart termite mounds and insect nests under tree bark.

The scales are the most distinctive feature. Made of keratin, the scales serve as protective armor; indeed, the name comes from the Malay pengguling, a reference to the habit of the animal to roll up into a protective ball during a predatory attack. In addition to the scales, pangolins emit a foul-smelling secretion from their anal glands.

'Omnishambles' is a newly coined phrase which is entering common use in the U.K. In essence it describes a situation which is perceived as shambolic from all possible perspectives.

Etymology
The term originated in the British satirical comedy show The Thick of It and is derived by the combination of the Latin prefix 'omni'-, meaning "all" and the word 'shambles' which means disorder. In the show, the character Malcolm Tucker uses the term when rebuking a junior cabinet minister.

Usage
Ed Miliband, the leader of the British Labour Party used the term during Prime Ministers Question time on April 18th 2012 when responding to the Budget statement:

::'On charities, the reality is that the Prime Minister is not making the rich worse off. He is making charities worse off. Over the past month we have seen the charity tax shambles, the churches tax shambles, the caravan tax shambles and the pasty tax shambles, so we are all keen to hear the Prime Minister’s view on why he thinks, four weeks on from the Budget, even people within Downing street are calling it an omnishambles Budget.

'Romnishambles'
The term received international attention during Mitt Romney's visit to the U.K. in July 2012. A day before the opening ceremony he questioned whether London was ready for the Olympics and was subsequently lampooned by the popular conservative London Mayor, Boris Johnson.

::"There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know whether we're ready. Are we ready?"

The nuclear, or constitutional, option is a parliamentary procedure that allows the United States Senate to override its own rules by majority vote. Senate rules require a three fifths, or 60 vote, "supermajority" to reach a decision in many situations. If the presiding officer rules that a motion raises a constitutional issue, the matter then goes immediately to the full senate. Since the Senate decides a constitutional issue by majority vote and without debate, this procedure may be used to bypass any requirement for a supermajority. In general, the presiding officer follows precedent as interpreted by the parliamentarian. Unlike the Speaker of the House, he rarely uses his discretionary power.

In 1892, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Ballin that the House of Representatives is a parliamentary body and as such may established rules by majority vote. These rules may not violate fundamental rights or constitutional restraints, according to this opinion. Mason's Manual applies the principle to U.S. legislative bodies generally: "A deliberative body cannot by its own act or rule require a two-thirds vote to take any action where the constitution or controlling authority requires only a majority vote. To require a two-thirds vote, for example, to take any action would be to give to any number more than one-third of the members the power to defeat the action and amount to a delegation of the powers of the body to a minority."

It has been argued that Ballin does not apply to the Senate because the Senate is in continuous session. As president of the Senate, Vice President Richard Nixon responded to a parliamentary inquiry on this matter in 1957. Nixon's opinion states that the constitution grants the presiding officer the authority to disregard Senate rules, provided that his ruling is later upheld by majority vote. The procedure Nixon outlined was used for the first time by Vice President Hubert Humphrey in 1967. On this occasion, the Senate upheld precedent and did not support the presiding officer. In 1975, the procedure was used three times. The Senate initially voted to support the presiding officer each time, although these votes were reversed as part of the final compromise agreement. A dramatic reform of the filibuster was also agreed to at this time. Senator Trent Lott applied the name "nuclear option" to the procedure in 2003. It was used again in November 2013 to revise rules concerning judicial and administrative nominations. Except for supreme court justice, these may now be confirmed by majority vote.

:For the church of this name, see Church of the Nazarene

Nazarene is a title applied to Jesus (c. 4 BC - AD 30), who grew up in Nazareth, a town in Galilee, now in northern Israel. The word is used to translate two related terms that appear in the Greek New Testament: Nazarēne and Nazōraios. The phrases traditionally rendered as "Jesus of Nazareth" can also be translated as "Jesus the Nazarene." So the title "Nazarene" may have a religious significance, in addition to denoting a place of origin.

The Gospel of Matthew explains that the title Nazarene is derived from the prophecy, “he would be called a Nazarene.” Unlike other prophecies that Matthew quotes, this one has no literal Old Testament source. It may refer to a passage in the Book of Isaiah, with "Nazarene" a Greek reading of the Hebrew ne·tser (branch), understood as a messianic title.

The Greek New Testament uses the word "Nazarene" or a variation nineteen times. In the Book of Acts, the word is used to refer to a follower of Jesus, i.e. a Christian. The modern words for "Christian" in Hebrew (No·tsri) and in Arabic (Naṣrānī) are derived from "Nazarene."

Etymology
Nazarene is anglicized from Greek Nazarēne, a word applied to Jesus in the New Testament. It is a reference not only to the city of Nazareth, but also to a Hebrew word for "branch" used in Isaiah.

Jerome (c. 347 – 420) linked the word to a messianic prophecy by Isaiah. He claimed that it was the Hebrew reading of a word modern scholars read as ne·tzer (branch). The text from Isaiah is:
In ancient Hebrew texts, vowels were not indicated. So a wider variety of readings was possible in Jerome's time. Here branch has the metaphoric meaning "descendant" (of Jesse, father of King David). Eusebius, a 4th-century Christian polemicist, also argued that Isaiah was the source of "Nazarene." This prophecy by Isaiah was extremely popular in New Testament times and is also referred to in Romans and Revelation.

Matthew
A link between Nazarene and Nazareth is found in Matthew:

Matthew's prophecy is often linked to one in Isaiah. Although only this prophecy gives "branch" as ne·tser, there are four other messianic prophecies where the word for branch is given as tze·mach. Matthew's phrase "spoken by the prophets" may suggest that these passages are being referred to collectively. In contrast, the phrase "by the prophet," used a few verses above the Nazarene prophecy, refers to a specific Old Testament passage.

An alternative view suggests that a passage in the Book of Judges which refers to Samson as a Nazirite is the source for Matthew's prophecy. "Nazorite" is only one letter off from "Nazorean" in Greek. But the characterization of Jesus in the New Testament is not that of a typical Nazirite, and it is doubtful that Matthew intended a comparison between Jesus and the amoral Samson.

Mark
The Gospel of Mark, considered the oldest gospel, consistently uses Nazarēne, while scripture written later generally uses Nazōraios. So it is possible that the form more closely tied to "Nazareth" came first. Another possibility is that Mark used this form because the more explicitly messianic form was still controversial when he was writing. Before he was baptized, Mark refers to Jesus as "from Nazareth of Galilee," whereas afterwards he is "the Nazarene," suggesting a transformation at the time of baptism. In a similar fashion, second century messianic claimant Simon bar Kokhba (Aramaic for "Simon, son of a star"), changed his name from Simon bar Kosiba to add a reference to the Star Prophecy.

MileStone Documents.</ref>, declaring religious freedom dependent upon a Creator to ensure all could worship said Creator freely. Madison wrote this as a petition arguing against another bill, "the Bill Establishing a Provision for Teachers of the Christian Religion", which would have instituted a general assessment or statewide tax to support clergy of Christian denominations in the state. The petition argued the dangers of saying "the Civil Magistrate is a competent Judge of Religious Truth"(5) or "suffering any Sect to invade those [equal rights] of another"(8); repeatedly arguing that entrenching a single denomination as a state institution "is adverse to the diffusion of the light of Christianity"(12). The Memorial and Remonstrance against Religious Assessments proved successful in stopping the assessments tax, and led to introduction of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom shortly thereafter.

Madison concludes the legislation by "earnestly praying, as we are in duty bound, that the Supreme Lawgiver of the Universe, by illuminating those to whom it is addressed, may on the one hand, turn their Councils from every act which would affront his holy prerogative, or violate the trust committed to them: and on the other, guide them into every measure which may be worthy of his [blessing, may re]dound to their own praise, and may establish more firmly the liberties, the prosperity and the happiness of the Commonwealth."
June 20, 1785

To the Honorable the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia

A Memorial and Remonstrance

We, the subscribers, citizens of the said Commonwealth, having taken into serious consideration, a
Bill printed by order of the last Session of General Assembly, entitled "A Bill establishing a provision for Teachers of the Christian Religion," and conceiving that the same if finally armed with the sanctions of a law, will be a dangerous abuse of power, are bound as faithful members of a free State to remonstrate against it, and to declare the reasons by which we are determined. We remonstrate against the said Bill,

1. Because we hold it for a fundamental and undeniable truth, "that religion or the duty which we owe to our Creator and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence." The Religion then of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every man; and it is the right of every man to exercise it as these may dictate. This right is in its nature an unalienable right. It is unalienable, because the opinions of men, depending only on the evidence contemplated by their own minds cannot follow the dictates of other men: It is unalienable also, because what is here a right towards men, is a duty towards the Creator. It is the duty of every man to render to the Creator such homage and such only as he believes to be acceptable to him. This duty is precedent, both in order of time and in degree of obligation, to the claims of Civil Society. Before any man can be considerd as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governour of the Universe: And if a member of Civil Society, do it with a saving of his allegiance to the Universal Sovereign. We maintain therefore that in matters of Religion, no man’s right is abridged by the institution of Civil Society and that Religion is wholly exempt from its cognizance. True it is, that no other rule exists, by which any question which may divide a Society, can be ultimately determined, but the will of the majority; but it is also true that the majority may trespass on the rights of the minority.

2. Because if Religion be exempt from the authority of the Society at large, still less can it be subject to that of the Legislative Body. The latter are but the creatures and vicegerents of the former. Their jurisdiction is both derivative and limited: it is limited with regard to the co-ordinate departments, more necessarily is it limited with regard to the constituents. The preservation of a free Government requires not merely, that the metes and bounds which separate each department of power be invariably maintained; but more especially that neither of them be suffered to overleap the great Barrier which defends the rights of the people. The Rulers who are guilty of such an encroachment, exceed the commission from which they derive their authority, and are Tyrants. The People who submit to it are governed by laws made neither by themselves nor by an authority derived from them, and are slaves.

3. Because, it is proper to take alarm at the first experiment on our liberties. We hold this prudent
jealousy to be the first duty of Citizens, and one of the noblest characteristics of the late Revolution. The free men of America did not wait till usurped power had strengthened itself by exercise, and entagled the question in precedents. They saw all the consequences in the principle, and they avoided the consequences by denying the principle. We revere this lesson too much soon to forget it. Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects? that the same authority which can force a citizen to contribute three pence only of his property for the support of any one establishment, may force him to conform to any other establishment in all cases whatsoever?

4. Because, the Bill violates the equality which ought to be the basis of every law, and which is more indispensible, in proportion as the validity or expediency of any law is more liable to be impeached. If "all men are by nature equally free and independent," all men are to be considered as entering into Society on equal conditions; as relinquishing no more, and therefore retaining no less, one than another, of their natural rights. Above all are they to be considered as retaining an "equal title to the free exercise of Religion according to the dictates of Conscience." Whilst we assert for ourselves a freedom to embrace, to profess and to observe the Religion which we believe to be of divine origin, we cannot deny an equal freedom to those whose minds have not yet yielded to the evidence which has convinced us. If this freedom be abused, it is an offence against God, not against man: To God, therefore, not to man, must an account of it be rendered. As the Bill violates equality by subjecting some to peculiar burdens, so it violates the same principle, by granting to others peculiar exemptions. Are the quakers and Menonists the only sects who think a compulsive support of their Religions unnecessary and unwarrantable? can their piety alone be entrusted with the care of public worship? Ought their Religions to be endowed above all others with extraordinary privileges by which proselytes may be enticed from all others? We think too favorably of the justice and good sense of these demoninations to believe that they either covet pre-eminences over their fellow citizens or that they will be seduced by them from the common opposition to the measure.

5. Because the Bill implies either that the Civil Magistrate is a competent Judge of Religious Truth; or that he may employ Religion as an engine of Civil policy. The first is an arrogant pretension falsified by the contradictory opinions of Rulers in all ages, and throughout the world: the second an unhallowed perversion of the means of salvation.

6. Because the establishment proposed by the Bill is not requisite for the support of the Christian
Religion. To say that it is, is a contradiction to the Christian Religion itself, for every page of it disavows a dependence on the powers of this world: it is a contradiction to fact; for it is known that this Religion both existed and flourished, not only without the support of human laws, but in spite of every opposition from them, and not only during the period of miraculous aid, but long after it had been left to its own evidence and the ordinary care of Providence. Nay, it is a contradiction in terms; for a Religion not invented by human policy, must have pre-existed and been supported, before it was established by human policy. It is moreover to weaken in those who profess this Religion a pious confidence in its innate excellence and the patronage of its Author; and to foster in those who still reject it, a suspicion that its friends are too conscious of its fallacies to trust it to its own merits.

7. Because experience witnesseth that eccelsiastical establishments, instead of maintaining the
purity and efficacy of Religion, have had a contrary operation. During almost fifteen centuries has
the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all
places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution. Enquire of the Teachers of Christianity for the ages in which it appeared in its greatest lustre; those of every sect, point to the ages prior to its incorporation with Civil policy. Propose a restoration of this primitive State in which its Teachers depended on the voluntary rewards of their flocks, many of them predict its downfall. On which Side ought their testimony to have greatest weight, when for or when against their interest?

8. Because the establishment in question is not necessary for the support of Civil Government. If it be urged as necessary for the support of Civil Government only as it is a means of supporting Religion, and it be not necessary for the latter purpose, it cannot be necessary for the former. If Religion be not within the cognizance of Civil Government how can its legal establishment be necessary to Civil Government? What influence in fact have ecclesiastical establishments had on Civil Society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the Civil authority; in many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny: in no instance have they been seen the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wished to subvert the public liberty, may have found an established Clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just Government instituted to secure & perpetuate it needs them not. Such a Government will be best supported by protecting every Citizen in the enjoyment of his Religion with the same equal hand which protects his person and his property; by neither invading the equal rights of any Sect, nor suffering any Sect to invade those of another.

9. Because the proposed establishment is a departure from the generous policy, which, offering an
Asylum to the persecuted and oppressed of every Nation and Religion, promised a lustre to our country, and an accession to the number of its citizens. What a melancholy mark is the Bill of sudden degeneracy? Instead of holding forth an Asylum to the persecuted, it is itself a signal of persecution. It degrades from the equal rank of Citizens all those whose opinions in Religion do not bend to those of the Legislative authority. Distant as it may be in its present form from the Inquisition, it differs from it only in degree. The one is the first step, the other the last in the career of intolerance. The maganimous sufferer under this cruel scourge in foreign Regions, must view the Bill as a Beacon on our Coast, warning him to seek some other haven, where liberty and philanthrophy in their due extent, may offer a more certain respose from his Troubles.

10 Because, it will have a like tendency to banish our Citizens. The allurements presented by other situations are every day thinning their number. To superadd a fresh motive to emigration by revoking the liberty which they now enjoy, would be the same species of folly which has dishonoured and depopulated flourishing kingdoms.

11. Because it will destroy that moderation and harmony which the forbearance of our laws to intermeddle with Religion has produced among its several sects. Torrents of blood have been split in the old world, by vain attempts of the secular arm, to extinguish Religious disscord, by proscribing all difference in Religious opinion. Time has at length revealed the true remedy. Every relaxation of narrow and rigorous policy, wherever it has been tried, has been found to assauge the disease. The American Theatre has exhibited proofs that equal and compleat liberty, if it does not wholly eradicate it, sufficiently destroys its malignant influence on the health and prosperity of the State. If with the salutary effects of this system under our own eyes, we begin to contract the bounds of Religious freedom, we know no name that will too severely reproach our folly. At least
let warning be taken at the first fruits of the threatened innovation. The very appearance of the Bill has transformed "that Christian forbearance, love and chairty," which of late mutually prevailed, into animosities and jeolousies, which may not soon be appeased. What mischiefs may not be
dreaded, should this enemy to the public quiet be armed with the force of a law?

12. Because the policy of the Bill is adverse to the diffusion of the light of Christianity. The first wish of those who enjoy this precious gift ought to be that it may be imparted to the whole race of mankind. Compare the number of those who have as yet received it with the number still
remaining under the dominion of false Religions; and how small is the former! Does the policy of the Bill tend to lessen the disproportion? No; it at once discourages those who are strangers to the light of revelation from coming into the Region of it; and countenances by example the nations who continue in darkness, in shutting out those who might convey it to them. Instead of Levelling as far as possible, every obstacle to the victorious progress of Truth, the Bill with an ignoble and unchristian timidity would circumscribe it with a wall of defence against the encroachments of error.

13. Because attempts to enforce by legal sanctions, acts obnoxious to go great a proportion of
Citizens, tend to enervate the laws in general, and to slacken the bands of Society. If it be difficult to execute any law which is not generally deemed necessary or salutary, what must be the case, where it is deemed invalid and dangerous? And what may be the effect of so striking an example
of impotency in the Government, on its general authority?

14. Because a measure of such singular magnitude and delicacy ought not to be imposed, without the
clearest evidence that it is called for by a majority of citizens, and no satisfactory method is yet
proposed by which the voice of the majority in this case may be determined, or its influence
secured. The people of the respective counties are indeed requested to signify their opinion
respecting the adoption of the Bill to the next Session of Assembly." But the representatives or of the Counties will be that of the people. Our hope is that neither of the former will, after due
consideration, espouse the dangerous principle of the Bill. Should the event disappoint us, it will
still leave us in full confidence, that a fair appeal to the latter will reverse the sentence against our liberties.

15. Because finally, "the equal right of every citizen to the free exercise of his Religion according to the dictates of conscience" is held by the same tenure with all our other rights. If we recur to its origin, it is equally the gift of nature; if we weigh its importance, it cannot be less dear to us; if we consult the "Declaration of those rights which pertain to the good people of Vriginia, as the basis and foundation of Government," it is enumerated with equal solemnity, or rather studied emphasis. Either the, we must say, that the Will of the Legislature is the only measure of their authority; and that in the plenitude of this authority, they may sweep away all our fundamental rights; or, that they are bound to leave this particular right untouched and sacred: Either we must say, that they may controul the freedom of the press, may abolish the Trial by Jury, may swallow up the Executive and Judiciary Powers of the State; nay that they may despoil us of our very right of
suffrage, and erect themselves into an independent and hereditary Assembly or, we must say, that they have no authority to enact into the law the Bill under consideration.

We the Subscribers say, that the General Assembly of this Commonwealth have no such authority:
And that no effort may be omitted on our part against so dangerous an usurpation, we oppose to
it, this remonstrance; earnestly praying, as we are in duty bound, that the Supreme Lawgiver of
the Universe, by illuminating those to whom it is addressed, may on the one hand, turn their
Councils from every act which would affront his holy prerogative, or violate the trust committed to
them: and on the other, guide them into every measure which may be worthy of his [blessing, may
re]dound to their own praise, and may establish more firmly the liberties, the prosperity and the
happiness of the Commonwealth.<ref>Atkinson, Kathleen (2007). "Early Virginians and Religious Freedom for Americans." Virginia Commonwealth University.
