Proposed Block Policy....your question
* It is as simple as the carrot and the stick.

:It is difficult, if not impossible, to impose administrative sanctions on others without at times seeming to be arbitrary or arrogant. A person will see such actions as they do, and "facts" will not change their mind. To be limited in one's response to undesirable actions, is to tie one hand behind your back from the start. I say this because as it is now worded, so much is totally subjective, and it doesn't preclude the type of Sysop reversals of another's actions we have been seeing. "Third Party" Sysop means what? The "YEC" Sysop faction? The "Liberal" faction? Conflict resolution is also subjective. When a Sysop's actions are reversed, that erodes their authority and leads users to "shop" for like-minded Sysops. This undermines the project as a whole. You can always reach me via IM or email here, if you would like to have a dialog. --<small>Sysop-</small>TK /MyTalk 19:12, 21 April 2007 (EDT)
I think we might be able to drive more http://www.google.com and other traffic to Conservapedia if we make the following articles at Conservapedia better based on the first 100 or so most popular articles at Wikipedia:
What do you think about starting a Conservapedia improvement drive for these articles? Clearly this are serious subjects that people are interested in based on Wikipedia statistics. :If you're going to quote anyone, then give the full context. Strange as it might seem to you, Ann Coulter has a reason for everything she says. When, for example, four widows start publicly those who would inhibit all efforts to prevent the murderers of their husbands from murdering other women's husbands, then they deserve the heaping of a certain opprobrium on their heads.
I think we might be able to drive more http://www.google.com and other traffic to Conservapedia if we make the following articles at Conservapedia better based on the first 100 or so most popular articles at Wikipedia:

The most characteristic feature of a eukaryotic cell, the nucleus, consists of a nucleoplasm surrounded by a double nuclear membrane pierced by nuclear pores. The nucleoplasm contains the (linear) chromosomes of the cell, which are organised into heterochromatin, which stains only a little, and euchromatin, which stains more densely. The most important euchromatic area is the nucleolus, in which ribosomes are formed.

#εύ-καρυον (eu-karyon) - true kernel.
#Double-membrane bound nucleus containing linear chromosomes.
#Complex 9+2-type undulipodium, cytoskeleton, cytosis and mitosis.
#Many membrane-bound organelles and double membrane-bound endosymbionts.
#They can grow 'large' because cytoplasmic streaming allows rapid transport across the cell - 100 μm.

The role of the nucleus is three-fold:

#Storage and protection of the genome.
#Regulation of gene expression.
#Creation of ribosomes.

DNA storage takes up about 10% of the cell of both prokaryotes (nucleoid area) and eukaryotes (nucleus). However, don't forget that some of the genome lives elsewhere: plasmids, endosymbionts (mitochondria), etc. The nucleus of eukaryotes also protects the genome from the cytoskeleton. Condensation of genome during mitosis is required to withstand these stresses. This is not relevant in prokaryotes, as they lack a cytoskeleton. The existence of the nucleus permits processing of mRNA, and therefore defers translation. Alternative splicing can be performed to generate different proteins from the same RNA primary transcript. mRNA is capped and tailed to permit it to exit the nucleus. rRNA and tRNA are also heavily processed by RNA editing, i.e. base modification (this also occurs to some mRNA in trypanosomes). rRNA modification occurs in the nucleolus, where ribosomes are constructed.

The nucleus is bound by a double-membrane, which is contiguous through the nuclear pores, known as the nuclear envelope. The pores are required to allow RNA out and membrane lipids in (which is needed for growth during S phase).

The inner face of the inner nuclear envelope (INE) is coated by the nuclear lamina, which contains intermediate fibres called lamins A, B and C (at least in mammals). Phosphorylation of lamins by kinases cause nuclear envelope breakdown during prometaphase. Chromosomes occupy definite positions within the nucleus because of the interaction between lamins and telomeres, for example the Rabl conformation in yeast.

In the Rabl conformation, the centromeres are at the pole closest to MTOC; and the telomeres at other, bound to the nuclear lamina. This orientation probably reduces tangling, and is inherited from mitosis. Later in interphase, the chromosomes may lose the Rabl conformation, but chromosomes still occupy discrete territories in the nucleus.

The outer nuclear envelope (ONE) is surrounded by other intermediate fibres, and is essentially just the RER surrounding the nucleus, and continuous with it. The space between the INE and ONE is termed the perinuclear space, and is continuous with the RER cisternae.

The cell wall of eukaryotes (when present) is usually composed of a β-(1→4)-glucan of some sort. In fungi, it is mostly chitin (N-acetylaminoglucan), in plants cellulose, but more exotic ingredients are common. Animal cells lack a wall, but may have a glycocalyx, which is a layer of thickened glycoproteins surrounding them and connecting them to the extracellular matrix.

Almost all eukaryotes have mitochondria, which are the remains of bacteria that became endosymbionts of the eukaryotic cell about a billion years ago. They perform oxidative phosphorylation and generate energy in the form of ATP for the cell. They have their own 70S ribosomes and some of their own DNA. Mitochondria have a double membrane surrounding them, the inner one is highly folded into cristae, surrounding a matrix space.

Photosynthetic eukaryotes also have chloroplasts, which are the remains of cyanobacteria that also became endosymbiotic. They have a triple membrane system. The outer membrane surrounds the inner membrane, which itself surrounds the stroma, in which are embedded a number of thylakoid membranes, some of which occur in stacks called grana. Those that are unstacked are termed intergrana. The thylakoids surround another compartment, termed the lumen. Chloroplasts are one of several different sorts of plastid. Others include proplasts (immature plastids), chromoplasts (full of pigments), etioplasts (formed in the dark) and amyloplasts (full of starch). Plastids carry out photosynthesis, converting light energy into ATP and NADH.

Eukaryotes have a cytoskeleton, which is composed of a number of interacting fibre types. The first are the actin microfilaments, which, with the motor protein myosin, form the muscles of the cytoskeleton (and in sarcosomes, form actual muscles too). The actin cytoskeleton forms a cortex beneath the plasmalemma of most eukaryotic cells, which is involved in changes to the external shape of the cell (such as the formation of pseudopodia in amoebae). The second fibre type are intermediate filaments, composed of spectrin, keratin, vimentin, nuclear lamins and other proteins. The intermediate filaments help maintain the relative positions of organelles and give the cell mechanical strength. The third type of cytoskeletal filament are the microtubules, which form the spindle during cell divisions (meiosis and mitosis), and give structure to the cell membrane, forming microvilli. They also form undulipodia, which are waving structures with a typical 9+2 structure, found in cilia (short undulipodia) and flagella (longer ones). The microtubules are composed of tubulin, and are organised by a microtubule organising centre (the centrosome and centrioles in animals), in which the − ends of the microtubules (which grow more slowly than the + ends) are embedded. Vesicles traffic along the microtubules under the influence of motor proteins such as kinesin (which transports items from the −→+ ends, i.e. away from the MTOC) and dynein (which traffics items from +→−). Tubulin is homologous to the FtsZ protein that is involved in bacterial fission.

The body of the cell is composed of a heterogeneous mixture of proteins and solutes called the cytosol. The cytosol contains many 80S ribosomes, on which protein synthesis takes place.

The endomembranes and plasmalemma form a continuous membrane system in the eukaryote cell. The cell contains a rich diversity of membranes, in addition to those found in the endosymbiotic organelles. The outer cell membrane or plasmalemma, controls what gets in and out of the cell by the use of pores, symports, antiports and pumps. It is composed of a fluid mosaic of proteins embedded in a phospholipid bilayer, as are all membranes. The plasmalemma also interacts with the extracellular space through receptors, gap junctions, plasmodesmata, and synapses.

The endomembranes include the nuclear membrane, already mentioned, and the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticula (RER and SER). The lamellae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum are continuous throughout the cell, and also contiguous with the nuclear membrane. They are the site of synthesis for proteins destined for the endomembrane system and the extracellular space, with which its lumen (the cisternal space) is topologically identical. The tubules of the SER are responsible for steroid and lipid synthesis. After translation on ribosomes attached to the RER, proteins are carried in small transport vesicles to the Golgi bodies (dictyosomes), where they go undergo modification to the glycosylation they received as they were imported into the RER. After modification, some proteins are exported from the trans-Golgi network in export vesicles to the extracellular space. The ER is continuous with the nuclear envelope, and probably evolved at the same time, possibly by invaginations of the sort seen in the mesosomes of bacteria.

The rough ER differs from the smooth ER morphologically. The RER's cytoplasmic surface is studded with ribosomes, and it has flattened cisternae (rather than tubular ones). The RER is denser than SER due to presence of ribosomes. Consequently, disrupted ER 'microsomes' can be separated using density gradient centrifugation.

Other proteins are destined for the endolysosome system. Material engulfed from outside by phagocytosis (solids) and pinocytosis (liquids) are packaged into phagosomes, and internal organelles destined for destruction are packed into autophagosomes. Endolysosomes containing digestive enzymes fuse with the phagosomes and digest their contents. The fused organelles produced are the cells disposal system, and are called lysosomes. Very large lysosomes are found in plants where they help to bulk the cell with water. Here they are called vacuoles, and are surrounded by a membrane called to tonoplast. Other vacuoles are involved in osmoregulation: for example contractile vacuoles in Amoeba.

Finally, a number of smaller vesicles are found in the cytosol. They are called microsomes, and most seem to be peroxisomes, containing the enzyme catalase, which degrades hydrogen peroxide produced by respiration. In germinating plant seed, many glyoxysomes are present, which perform fat oxidation for growth. Some vesicles also contain food reserves, such as fat droplets.

Eukaryotic DNA is bound by histones, and requires some degree of unpacking for expression. Much of their genome is composed of parasitic DNA and introns. Three RNA polymerases exists, (approximately) one for each sort of major RNA product:

RNApol-I - rRNA.
RNApol-II - mRNA and snRNA.
RNApol-III - tRNA and 5S rRNA.
RNA is heavily processed in the nucleus, which allows deferred translation. They possess large 80S ribosomes.

The structure of a prokaryote is very much simpler than that of a eukaryote. There are no endomembranes, endosymbionts, nucleus or cytoskeleton. The DNA is carried on the genophore, a circular chromosome, in a ill defined area of the cytosol called the nucleoid. The chromosome is attached to the cell membrane during cell division (fission), frequently at a point called the mesosome.

#πρό-καρυον (pro-karyon) - before kernel.
#No nucleus - free circular genophore.
#'Simple' rotating motor-type flagellum.
#Cell division by fission, genophore attached to plasmalemma by mesosome.
#Few membrane-bound organelles, no double-membrane bound organelles.
#They are 'small' because diffusion limits the rate of transport across the cell - 1 μm.

The cytosol contains oil droplets, food reserves and the 70S ribosomes, and is surrounded by a plasmalemma. In Gram negative bacteria, a further outer membrane surrounds the plasmalemma, with a thin cell wall and periplasmic space trapped between them. In Gram positive bacteria, there is no outer membrane, and the cell wall is thicker. The cell wall is composed of peptidoglycan and various organic acids in Eubacteria. Bacteria have flagella, but they are simple proteinaceous strands attached to a rotary motor, completely dissimilar to the complex eukaryotic undulipodium. Membranes may be present in the cell, as in the thylakoids of the Cyanobacteria. The cytosol may also contain various episomes (small circular chromosomes), some called plasmids, and others called (bacterio)phages, which are bacterial viruses.

Prokaryotes are extraordinarily diverse:

Proteobacteria - Gram-negative, two cell membranes, hugely diverse, Escherichia coli.

Firmicutes and Actinobacteria - Gram-positive, thick peptidoglycan cell wall.

Spirochaetes - helical bacteria.

Prokaryotic DNA lacks histones (packaging proteins), although other packaging proteins are present, and molecules have easier access to DNA compared with eukaryotes. They generally have efficient genomes, with little sequence other than coding sequence or regulatory sequence. Transcription is by just one class of RNA polymerase. Transcription leads to translation with no intermediate processing, which allows several genes to be encoded in a single transcriptional unit (a polycistron). They have small (70S) ribosomes.

The Vietnam War, officially the Second Indochina Conflict, was initiated by the United States, in response to a poll conducted that suggested given the planned democratic election after the reduction of the demilitarized zone upheld until 1956 since the war would lead to a certain communist victory.

America, knowing that South Vietnam would democratically become a communist state abstained from signing the Geneva conference of 1954 allowing this election to happen even though these were the grounds they had stated at the end of the Second World War. A frustrated Ho Chi Minh eventually decided to move into South Vietnam as the increasingly unpopular US controlled government employed stronger tactics to maintain the South Vietnamese people under Diem. In retaliation the US sent 'advisers' to help Diem keep the situation under control before stepping up to a full scale ground war. The war was the longest in American history, lasting approximately 16 years.

Opposition to the Vietnam War
The Vietnam War is remembered as creating massive opposition in the United States. Much of the hippie movement was based in opposition to the Vietnam War and a belief in pacifism more broadly. This opposition inspired such songs as "The I Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die Rag," by Country Joe McDonald, "Give Peace a Chance," by John Lennon, "Run Through the Jungle," by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and "War," by Edwin Starr. This opposition also manifested itself in the form of protests. One of the most famous protests of this era occurred at Kent State University in Ohio, during which four students were shot and killed by the Ohio State National Guard following several days of rioting and the firebombing of the ROTC building. The shooting was later determined to be justified when a federal court dismissed the case against the eight guardsmen indicted.

It wasn't until the Reagan era that popular culture, and society, began to embrace Vietnam veterans as heroes by creating characters like John Rambo and John "Hannibal" Smith.
Texas is the twenty-eighth state to enter into the union and was admitted on December 29, 1845. It is the second largest of the 50 US states, and the largest continental state. Before its admission, it was its own country, having gained independence from Mexico

The capital of Texas is Austin, and the largest city is Houston. It was solidly Democratic from about 1900 to the 1970s, then Republicans gradually took control and now dominate.

Texas is 268,581 sq miles total area.

The "Six Flags" amusement park chain takes its name from the fact that six flags have flown over Texas: Spanish, French, Mexican, Republic of Texas, Confederate States of America, and United States of America.

Despite a widely spread urban legend stating otherwise, Texas's entry to the Union was not accompanied by a provision that allows Texas to secede from the Union at any time. It is, however, the only state with the right to break itself into up to five smaller states.

GodlessLiberal: remove weasel words, but keep phil j's views

Calculating the date of creation has exercised many minds for hundreds of years.

Basis of calculation
The Bible contains chronogenealogies from Adam to Abraham, listing the age at which each person in the genealogy gave birth to the next person in the list, thus allowing by simple addition a determination of how many years passed between creation and Abraham. There are other chronological indications also, allowing that calculation to be extended into the times of the kings, when the dates can be correlated with other events in history for which the absolute date is known. By this means, in theory, one can calculate the date of creation.

There are, however, some uncertainties in this. For example, Genesis lists the age of Terah when the first of his sons was born, but was Abraham this son, or the second or third son?
Different researchers have proposed different answers to this and similar problems, but none of these problems change the result by a very significant amount.

An objection that has often been raised is whether the chronogenealogies were intended to be used this way, or whether, for example, generations have been missed.
Henry Morris, a pioneer of modern creationism, allowed for the possibility of gaps in the genealogies, but claimed that it was unreasonable to stretch the date back further than about 10,000 B.C.
In more recent times, however, creationists have concluded that there is no reason to think that there are gaps, and this view is supported by the consensus of the experts, according to James Barr, then regius professor of Hebrew at Oxford University, and not a young-Earth creationist (he also wrote a book attacking biblical inerrancy), who wrote in 1984: "… probably, so far as I know, there is no professor of Hebrew or Old Testament at any world-class university who does not believe that the writer(s) of Genesis 1–11 intended to convey to their readers the ideas that: … the figures contained in the Genesis genealogies provided by simple addition a chronology from the beginning of the world up to later stages in the biblical story."

Old-earth creationists do not accept this date, proposing that there may be gaps in the genealogies.

Calculated dates
The best known date of creation is the one calculated by Archbishop James Ussher in the 17th century - namely 6:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 4004 BC. However, only the year was based on the Biblical ages; the date and time were based on other considerations. Sir Isaac Newton defended Ussher's date. Another to calculate the date of creation was Johannes Kepler, who worked it out to be 3992 B.C.

But such calculations in fact date from at least the Middle Ages, and offer a range of dates from around 5000 to 4000 BC. Judaic tradition (to which the Old Testament of course belongs) reckons the date of creation at 3760 BC. Another calculation, beginning with the date of the destruction of Jerusalem known from secular history and working backwards, arrives at 4163 BC.

Based on geological dating methods, however, secular scientific research dates the formation of the Earth to around 4.5 billion (4.5 * 109) years ago, which is significantly more accurate than any of the guesstimates shown above.
History
The Federalist Party was one of the first political parties in the United States, formed for the purpose of ratifying the Constitution. John Adams was the only Federalist to serve as president, although George Washington had Federalist leanings. Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury for Washington, was for all practical purposes the leader of the party. Chief Justice John Marshall was the last Federalist in the federal government, serving until his death in 1835. The party met with several setbacks in the early nineteenth century that led to its demise. Hamilton, their leader, died in 1804 as a result of his famous duel with Aaron Burr. The party drew most of its support from New England, a region that largely opposed the War of 1812. Many of the Federalist Party's leaders labeled the conflict “Mr. Madison’s War.” The Federalists were among the interests that called the Hartford Convention in 1814 for the purpose of amending the Constitution, and carried with it the implied threat of succession. However, the convention dissolved with news of the Treaty of Ghent and Andrew Jackson’s victory at the Battle of New Orleans. The fortunes of the party declined after the War of 1812. Opponents used the charge of treason during the post-war nationalism, and no Federalist ever won national office again.

Platform
The Federalists advocated a strong national government, with little or no power in the hands of the states. Their foreign policy was pro-British and anti-French, leading to conflict with the Francophile Democratic-Republicans. In terms of economics, they subscribed to the Hamiltonian notion that the United States must engage in manufacturing and commerce in order to become a great power.

Brown University is an American university located in Providence, Rhode Island. It is a member of the Ivy League. Brown was founded in 1764; the University motto is In Deo Speramus, which means "In God We Hope" or "In God is our Hope". The current President of Brown is Ruth J. Simmons; it has 628 full-time faculty members and 7,595 students.

History
Brown was founded by Ezra Stiles, a Congregationalist Minister, and James Manning, a Baptist Minister; it was originally known as Rhode Island College. It charter was granted on March 3, 1764; among the sixty-odd signatories were the wealthy brothers John and Nicholas Brown, and the College was located in Warren, Rhode Island. The charter specified that "into this liberal and catholic institution shall never be admitted any religious tests, but on the contrary, all the members hereof shall forever enjoy full, free, absolute, and uninterrupted liberty of conscience", and as such was considered liberal and nonsectarian. Brown and Penn both have claims to be considered the first nonsectarian institution of higher learning in the United States

The College moved to Providence in 1770, and in 1804 was renamed Brown University in honor of Nicholas Brown, a nephew of John Brown, who had given a bequest of $5,000. The Brown family, as was typical at the time, participated in the slave trade. According to a Brown University report, "slavery was... an institution that permeated every aspect of social and economic life in Rhode Island, the Americas, and indeed the Atlantic World. There is no question that many of the assets that underwrote the University’s creation and growth derived, directly and indirectly, from slavery and the slave trade.... By the standards of Rhode Island’s mercantile elite, the Browns were not major slave traders, but they were not strangers to the business either."

The 1836-7 Brown catalog&mdash;or "catalogue," as it was spelled&mdash;lists the names of the entire student body: 43 freshman, 60 sophomores, 45 juniors, and 41 seniors. Candidates for admission were required, among other things, to
:bring satisfactory evidence of unexceptionable moral character, and be thoroughly acquainted with the Grammar of the Latin and Greek languages, be able to construe and parse... the Historical Books of the New Testament, or three Books of Xenophon's Cyrop&aelig;dia, and translate English into Latin correctly.

Brown did not admit women until 1891, when a women's college named Pembroke College was founded. Brown became coeducational in 1971 when the undergraduate school merged with Pembroke College.

Brown had "compulsory chapel"&mdash;a requirement that students attend Sunday services&mdash;from its founding until 1872. After 1872 services were, of course, still conducted and students encouraged to attend them. At some point, services again became mandatory (although not strictly enforced) until the requirement was finally abolished in 1959. A 1904 book of student verse includes a lament by one C. S. Mitchell entitled "Chapel Bell:"
:Far away across the fields
:The tolling of the iron bell
:Calls the faithful to their knees
:To hear the softly spoken magic spells...<br>

Hypertext
Brown University has been a pioneer in the development of hypertext. This technology was championed by Andries van Dam, who founded Brown's computer science department and chaired it from 1975 to 1989. The first hypertext editing system, HES, was developed at Brown in 1967 by Ted Nelson (coiner of the word hypertext) working under van Dam's direction., short summary by George P. Landow, professor of English and Art History]. Brown's Iris Intermedia project was important and influential; several significant bodies of hypertext developed in that system have since been ported to the Web, notably The Victorian Web, an encyclopedic collection of information and source texts about the Victorian era.

The New Curriculum
Brown prides itself on its "New Curriculum," first established in 1969, which allows students to take virtually any course they want, with no general distribution requirements. Traditional letter grades are optional. However, the current undergraduate curriculum is currently under review, with recommendations set to be made in the spring of 2008.
Controversies
In 2005, Brown University's "Queer Alliance" threw a raucous and drunken party called "Sex Power God" in a university building. The event was covered by disguised reporters for The O'Reilly Factor, causing bad publicity for the university. The "Queer Alliance" was suspended for a year and prohibited from throwing any more parties in that building, and banned alchohol at the next party.

In April 2006 occured what became known as the "Bongmarket Street Riot" where many students brought their bongs out onto a green to celebrate "Marijuana Day", 4/20. When security personell approached these stoners and asked them to disperse they refused, and some, under the influence of the Marijuana, became manic, violent, and threatening. Police had to be called in to disperse the rioters.

Diocletian was Emperor of Rome from A.D. 284-305. He attempted to destroy the Christian faith by burning the scriptures. He also forbade worship and arrested clergy. He insisted on pagan sacrifices. He martyred hundreds of CHristians from Europe to North Africa.

Diocletian attempted to save the Roman empire by dividing it into eastern and western regions, with Byzantium as the capital of the East and Rome as the capital of the West. He established the "tetrarchy", or division of power among four rulers in 293 B.C. The tetrarchy included two primary rulers, each with the title "Augustus", who ruled over the eastern and western empires, and two "Caesars" who served under the Augustuses. He imposed economic regulations, some of which seem silly today. For example, Diocletian required farmers to stay with their land and workers to stay on the job for the rest of their lives. He did this to prevent people from leaving their work to avoid taxation. For an empire that embraced slavery, this probably seemed like normal regulations. Diocletian also imposed wage and price controls to halt inflation. That economic regulation, which almost always fails, is still attempted by modern rulers, such as the United States President during World War II and even President Nixon in the early 1970s.

Diocletian also attempted to suppress Christianity by ordering Christians to worship him and brutally persecuting them when they did not. He was the last emperor to do this. Diocletian abdicated (resigned) due to a stomach illness in A.D. 305.

: February is from februare which is Latin for to purify. March is named after Mars - the time when the snow melted enough to get ready to go back to war. April was Aprilis which is possibly a form of aperire - to open, as in flowers opening. May was Maia, mother of Mercury (and Jupiter) depending on the story. Others had her as the daughter of Faunus, and wife of Vulcan. June was Juno - Roman equivalent of Hera. It appears I was incorrect above about the insertion of months. The roman year started with March 1 - and thus October would be the 8th month of that calandar. http://www.factmonster.com/spot/newyearhistory.html --Mtur 21:52, 1 May 2007 (EDT)
::So it was January and February that were added in when Julius reformed the calendar in (I think) 45 BC? All your name info agrees with the respective articles here, except April. : It is correct. The Greeks knew Great Britain as Albion, and the ancient Romans knew Great Britain as 'Brittania' (It was one of their provinces) and Ireland as 'Hibernia.' (Which was not one of their provinces.) They would never have refered to a land which was part of their empire with the same name as a land which was not part of their empire. That would not make sense.
The term 'Britanniae Insulae' (Or British Isles) was used much much later, in relatively modern times, (16th century) by a Roman cartographer to describe the islands of Britain and Ireland. Even before the birth of Christ, the Islands were known as Brittania and Hibernia. The use of Brittaniae Insulae by some distant map maker in Rome 1600 years after the islands were first thrown into the light of civilisation is surely just the first instance of the incorrect term British Isles being used to describe the whole archipelago.

::Ptolemy, in his 2nd century book "Geography", had a chapter titled "Hibernia, island of Britannia", and the next chapter was called "Albion, island of Britannia". In the 1st century Pliny the Elder specifically describes Britannia as including Britain, Ireland, the Orkneys, and many other places. In fact, the true historical position is quite the reverse of what has been stated above. Britannia was a term that described both Hibernia and Albion. When the Romans took over most of Albion, they applied the name Britannia to the area over which they ruled, which is why some have mistakenly assumed that it only refers to that island.
