Mount Everest

2007-04-18T05:37:37Z

Greatwhitenorth:

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth (29,028 feet).

Located in Nepal, on the Nepal- Tibet border, it is part of the Himalaya mountain range. It was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on May 29th, 1954. Although sometimes attributed to Hillary, the quotation on why he was climbing Everest, "Because it's there," was actually said by George Mallory, who, with his partner Andrew Irving, attempted Everest in 1924. They were unsuccessful in their attempt, and both died on the mountain.
The first female to climb Everest was a Japanese climber named Junko Tabei. She summited on May 16th, 1975.

Greatwhitenorth:

The Bauhaus school was founded by German architect Walter Gropius in 1919. This design school was located in Weimar, Germany. The goal of the school was to create simple, unornamented designs in all fields, from architecture to household furniture and graphic design. The school’s influence is seen in many aspects of modern design. Interestingly enough, in the 1980's a progressive rock band formed and named itself Bauhaus. This music was later termed "Goth", even though Walter Gropius had nothing to do with the Gothic culture of the 3rd and 4th century A.D.

Liberal

2007-03-24T21:53:59Z

Greatwhitenorth:

Liberal is a term used in US politics to describe a person who generally is left-wing in his attitudes towards the government, establishment, and many other laws. The term was first used in reference to a political opinion c. 1801 A.D., in the aftermath of the French Revolution, when it meant "tending in favor of freedom and democracy."

The term liberal is used in the United States to characterize the following set of beliefs:

* In favor of gun control
* Supports a woman's right to choose pregnancy termination, i.e. abortion
* prohibiting organized prayer in school
* equal responsibilities for men and women, such as equal participation by men and women in the military
* government programs to rehabilitate criminals
* same-sex marriage
* teaching of evolution
* increased taxpayer funding of public schools
* protection of natural resources and wilderness areas
* taxpayer-funded rather than private medical care
* increased power for labor unions
* disarmament treaties
* Classical liberalism stood for a limited government role
* Private property and individual contracts form the basis of Classical liberal economic theory
* reduction of military expenses
* support of affirmative action
* government-sponsored education
* preference for a interpretation of the constitution as a "living Constitution" instead of an unchanging Constitution
*Income redistribution, with higher progressive taxation on those in the top 10% of earnings.
* Opposition to current American administration foreign policy which advocates human rights and democracy

Note, that liberal in the European context refers to moderate and center-right parties, often with a pro-business stance. The same holds for many liberal parties throughout the world.. The US definition of liberal is much more similar to the politics of European socialist or social democratic parties..

One definition of liberal is anything that is not conservative. For example, the American Heritage Dictionary includes this definition of "liberal":
: Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas ...
Another definition is a liberal is the opposite of a prodigal; where a liberal consumes resources on others, a prodigal consumes his own resources on himself.

Limbaugh underwent a scandal several years ago when his housekeeper was caught purchasing oxycontin and other painkillers on his behalf. He sought treatment soon afterward.

Another scandal occurred when, "On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration, Limbaugh put up a picture of Socks, the White House cat, and asked, "Did you know there's a White House dog?" Then he put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton, who was 13 years old at the time...". Limbaugh has also been criticized for his comments regarding Michael J. Fox's participation in Claire McCaskill's 2006 senate campaign in Missouri. In his radio broadcast, Limbaugh criticized a campaign commercial Fox filmed in support of McCaskill's position on taxpayer funded embryonic stem cell research. Limbaugh accused Fox of being off his medication in order to generate sympathy.
