Scouting and Christianity?
Baden-Powell may well have said "Scouting is applied Christianity," but I am not so sure that the modern BSA should be associated with Christianity, as in the sentence
:As a result of their strong adherence to traditional Christian morality...

It seems to me that the Boys Scouts are better characterized, not as Christian, but as embracing the sort of "generic religion" espoused by Benjamin Franklin. The BSA mission and vision statements mention God and reverence, but make no reference to Christianity. BSA fact sheets include titles such as
*Scouting in the Buddhist community
*Scouting in the Islamic community
Interesting points, but this seems to be on the fringe of Scouting. Christian schools often welcome non-Christians also. In the U.S., Boy Scouts tend to be overwhelmingly Christian.--Aschlafly 22:29, 23 February 2007 (EST)

I think that the comment about Christian morality can be interpreted in a couple different ways. In a nutshell, BSA is based upon Christian morality, even though there is no "official" requirement within the program that Scouts be a Christian. Although I did have to switch troops because one troop would not let me advance because I was a Baptist rather than a Nazarene. Religious emblems are awarded to Christians, and for other religions as well. I know that the religious emblems aren't given out by the BSA, but the BSA literature did reference the pamphlets for the other one. I remember that my troop brought in a speaker once who talked about the twelth point of the Scout law and said that it didn't matter what you believed as long as you believe something. I did come across Jewish and Mormon troops I know the Mormons have strongly embraced the Scouting programs.

However, it's undeniable that the BSA's principled are strongly based upon Christian morality, even if there are a number of non-Christians within the program. MountainDew 02:30, 5 March 2007 (EST)

John Cabot was born in Genoa, Italy in 1450 to the seaman and merchant, Julio Cabot. John always had a deep interest in exploration, and he studied sailing and mapping until he was proficient in both. In 1487, John met and married a girl named Mattea. They had three sons, Lewis, Sebastian, and Sanctus. John and his family moved to England and he began to search for a sponsor to fund a voyage to the Indies. Finally, On March 5, 1496 King Henry gave John a charter giving him permission to sail North, East or West but not South because the Spaniards were there. John set out on his voyage on May 2, 1497. He had only one ship, the Matthew, with a small crew of eighteen men. John Cabot and his crew sailed the Matthew around the tip of Ireland and then northward. They then changed course and sailed westward until they sighted land on June 21, 1497. John and his men set sail for England less than a month later on July 20, 1497. When the Matthew reached England, the people called Cabot ‘The Great Admiral’. King Henry was so pleased that he gave John a yearly pension of twenty pounds for the rest of his life. In 1498, John left on another voyage with five ships and three hundred men. One ship experienced trouble and soon made for an Irish port. The other four were never heard of again. It is speculated that the ships were wrecked in a storm. John Cabot’s great love of the sea brought the great mariner to a tragic early death.

In the United States there were some American citizens of Japanese descent, particularly in California. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, fear and distrust about Japanese Americans arose. Rumors of surprise Japanese attacks on the west coast of the United States became common, and some American officials feared spying by Japanese Americans. The loyalty of American citizens of Japanese descent was doubted.

President Roosevelt, with the support of California Governor Earl Warren (who was later appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the 1950s), ordered that people of Japanese be forced to live in internment camps where they could be watched 24 hours a day. These included American citizens who had been born in the United States (the "Nisei"). Their property was confiscated also. Many of the internment camps were located away from the coasts in unfamiliar territories, such as near Indian reservations. Overall, 110,100 Japanese Americans were forcibly moved to internment camps during the war.

This policy constituted racial discrimination and some of the victims sued to stop it. But the U.S. Supreme Court upheld this racial discrimination in Korematsu v. United States (1944). Three dissented from this decision, which is considered one of the Court’s most embarrassing rulings. In 1948 Congress enacted the Japanese American Evacuation Claims Act to compensate some of the victims for losing their homes and businesses. In 1980, Congress held hearings to review some of the personal hardships, and issued a report in 1983 condemning President Roosevelt's removal order the Supreme Court decision.

James was a son of Zebedee and the brother of another Apostle, John. Both were given the nickname "sons of thunder." They apparently came from a family that ran a successful fishing business, as demonstrated by a reference in Mark to how the business had hired servants. "And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him." Mark 1:20. Peter and Andrew were also partners in the same fishing business, suggesting that all four (James, John, Peter and Andrew) enjoyed some success. Peter, James and John were the Apostles closest to Jesus during His ministry.

It is possible that James was a first cousin of Jesus and knew Him when they were children. James' mother was Salome, who could have been the sister of Jesus' mother, Mary.

James was present when Jesus resurrected Jarius' daughter, when Jesus underwent a transfiguration, and when Jesus went through His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. James (and his brother John) made the mistake of seeking authority over others, which earned him a rebuke from Jesus.

James was older than John, and James was the first Apostle to be martyred. The beheading of James by King Herod Agrippa I in Rome is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles of the New Testament (Acts 12:2), and occurred between A.D. 41 and 44, only about ten years after Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.

The prominence of James' father, the success of their fishing business, the connection of James' brother John with the high priest (John 18:15), and the martyrdom of James by beheading rather than crucifixion might cause one to ask whether James could have even been a Roman citizen, as Paul was. Roman citizens could not be crucified as Jesus and many Apostles were. But James did not appeal his sentence to Caesar in Rome, which he could have done if he were a Roman citizen as Paul was, and there is no suggestion in the New Testament that any of Jesus's Apostles were citizens of Rome.

D‑Day was June 6, 1944, when Allied forces began their invasion of continental Europe in order to free it from Nazi (German) control. On this day, the Allied forces accomplished the largest amphibious invasion in the history of mankind on the beaches of Normandy, France. The operation used 200,000 men, 9,000 planes, and 5,000 ships.

The landings were originally scheduled for June 5, but bad weather and heavy cloud cover on June 4 forced General Eisenhower to postpone the attack. The next day, the weather had not improved much, but the Allied commanders decided that a delay would be too costly.

Prior to the landings in Normandy, a huge deception campaign was started by the Allies. Radio transmissions were deliberately allowed to be intercepted saying that the landings would be at Calais, not Normandy. Also, on the days before the attack, squadrons of bombers dropped flakes of tin foil on the route to Calais to try to fool the German radar into thinking an Allied fleet was advancing toward Calais. The deception worked, becasue on the day of the actual invasion, much of the German's main army was held back in anticipation of the "real" invasion coming in Calais.

The Night
Starting before dawn, elite paratroopers and soldiers in gliders landed behind enemy lines to take out critical gun emplacements. When the planes were flying to their drop zones, they ran into some cloud cover. Naturally, their formations spread apart because the pilots were afraid they would collide with other planes. As a result, the paratroopers and glider-borne infantry were scattered and, in some cases, miles from their intended drop zones. When they landed, they encountered many problems. The Germans had flooded many low areas, and the paratroopers, weighed down by their chutes and gear, often drowned in just a few feet of water. Those that were lucky enough to survive the landing then had to get their bearings, regroup, and accomplish their objectives. The case of the Merville Battery shows why these men made up the Greatest Generation.

The Merville Battery consisted of four heavy guns in a massive concrete emplacement pointed at Sword beach. It was protected by mine fields and antitank ditches, a 15 foot thick hedge of barbed wire, more mine fields, a maze of machine-gun-filled trenches, and a garrison of 200 men. The plan was to have 100 bombers drop 4,000 pound bombs on the battery. Glider trains were to bring in jeeps, antitank guns, and flamethrowers, Bangalore torpedoes (to cut through the barbed wire), mine detectors, mortars, and ladders. When the ground troops moved in, three gliders filled with men were to crash land on the battery, and if there is no success signal by 5:30, naval bombardment would commence. In reality, Bombing attack failed, and the glider train was lost. Only 150 men of 700 could be found, and that took so much time that they only had one hour to take the battery. They did not have the signal to give to the gliders that were to crash-land on it, so the gliders did not land on the battery. In spite of all this, they still managed to take the battery.

Before the beach invasions began, 9,000 planes and hundreds of warships bombarded the coast. The craters are still visible in many places, including Point du Hoc.

The Longest Day
American soldiers landed at Omaha and Utah beahces, while the British and Canadian forces landed at Sword, Juno, and Gold beaches. The British forces at Juno faced light resistance thanks to bombardment by the Allied Navy. The Americans Utah beach faced the lightest resistance; out of 23,000 soldiers, there were only 197 casualties. However, at Sword, the Canadians faced 11 heavy batteries of 155 mm guns, 9 medium batteries of 75 mm guns, machine-gun nests, pillboxes, other concrete fortifications, and a seawall twice the height of the one at Omaha Beach. The first wave suffered a 50% casualty rate. Omaha beach was the bloodiest landing zone; 2,500 of the 10,000 casualties occured at Omaha. It was defended by 8 concrete bunkers with 75 millimeters or larger guns, 35 pillboxes, 4 batteries of artillery, 18 antitank guns, 6 mortar pits, 35 rocket-launching sites, and more than 85 machine-gun nests.

One of many bizarre historical coincidences, almost none of the German commanders were at the front on the day of the invasion. Rommel was back in Germany to speak with Hitler and for his wife's birthday, June 6. Von Tempelhof, Army Group B’s operations officer, was in Germany. Admiral Theodor Krandke, the naval commander in the west, was in Bordeaux. Major General Heinz Hellmich, Lieutenant General Karl von Schlieben, and Major General Wilhelm Falley were on their way to war games in Rennes. Colonel Wilhelm Meyer-Detring was on leave, and Hitler was at his Berchtesgaden retreat in Bavaria.

German army doctrine also said to hold the Panzers in reserve several miles away from the beaches and allow the Allies to land, then pound them with the Panzers once the troops had landed. Even after the Allies had landed, Hitler held the main Panzer force in reserve because he thought that the landings in Normandy were a diversion and the real invasion would come in Calais and be commanded by General George S. Patton.

The Normandy invasion signalled the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, and the Allies would be slowed very little once the main force had landed. Two artificial ports were created that provided a constant supply of reinforcements. The day would be remembered in years to come as the "Longest Day".
