The roots of WWII began in Germany in 1933. Adolf Hitler used the unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles to get the German people to back him up so that he could try to conquer the world. The war was not in full swing until the middle of the 1940 and slowly most of Europe was involved as well as Japan, The United States and the Soviet Union.

Facism and Communism are very different, but they do have some things in common. For example, both used a dictatorship and did not believe in individual freedom. Hitler and his supporters were able to kill people because they lost their consciences. Slowly, the still small voice that was showing them what was right and what was wrong faded until it was practically nonexistent.

Technological advances helped the Allies win the war. General George Patton was incredible at maneuvering tanks at lightening speed. With out his technological talent, the Allies may have never won the war.

The “Great War” was a brutal war that divided the most powerful countries in the world against each other. It was called the “Great War” because it was the first war that really divided the world. The Central Powers were made up of Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. The other side was the Allies, which was made up of Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan and eventually the United States.

The Allies won the “Great War” or World War I in 1918. Although the fighting was over, the terms of peace were not resolved. Unfortunately, when the terms were eventually resolved, Germany was treated unfairly. They were not allowed to join the League of Nations and they had to give up all its colonies in Africa and the Pacific. If the Allies had not let revenge blind them, World War II may have never happened.

The battle of Gallipoli was very interesting. The Allies attempted to push Turkey out of the war, but the Allies didn’t do their homework on the Turks or the Turkish terrain. Even though the Allies outnumbered the Turks by quite a bit, they were defeated because the Turks were incredible fighters and they knew the land and terrain much better. This battle shows that having more soldiers doesn’t necessarily mean victory for that side.

The Communist Revolution took place in the 1917 in St. Petersburg, Russia and was lead by Lenin. His goal was to give power to the factory workers and give the wealth to the poor.

The Sunnis are more moderate and get along with other cultures. In contrast the Shiites are more extreme and do not get along well with other cultures.

I find it interesting how Islam dominates countries religious views. Very few countries have just a few Muslims. I think this says a lot about the very structure of Islam.

The English meaning for the word “faith” does apply to other religions. The English word simply means to have confidence or trust in a certain person or thing. This definition of faith does apply to most religions. But the Christian faith is in fact different from every other religious faith. Through going back to the Hebrew language this becomes clear. The Hebrew word for faith which is used in the Old Testament is emunah. Emunah is an action oriented to the word “support”. So when I say that I have faith in God, I am not just saying that I have confidence that God exists, like people in other religions say, I am going even further. I am saying that I fully support what I know God can do and is going to do. So the Christian faith is different from the faith in any other religion.

It is amazing that America has only been around for a mere 200 years; the same amount of time that the Pax Romana lasted.

God is the ultimate designer and coordinator of every historical event. He is the one who started history and He will be the one to end it. Everything that has ever happened in the universe is part of his plan. Everything in history can absolutely be attributed to God paving the way for Jesus, or the devil creating obstacles for Him.

The Roman law was more influential then the Roman legions. Although both the military and the government need to be strong in order for an empire to seceded, the government is more crucial. If we look at history this becomes inevitable. For instance, look at Attila the Hun. He had one of the fiercest armies that the world has ever known, but when he died they fell apart. Also look at Adolf Hitler. He was a military genius and yet, without a strong government, even the seemingly unbreakable Nazi army fell apart. The Roman empire was so invincible because it attained both a strong military and a strong government. But, in the end, the Roman law was more influential than the Roman army.

Attila the Hum was a truly remarkable military leader, but I believe he was one of the saddest people in all of history. I can’t imagine leading the life of cruelty that he lead. These city-states knew that they would need a stronger form of government to unit them. If the Greek terrain was not so rough, the Greeks would not have even seen the need for democracy.

Ancient Greece was the first culture that discovered how to make a language really work through using letters. Language is truly a very powerful thing. Take a look at Genesis 11:1, 6-7; “Now the whole world had one language and a common speech…The Lord said, ‘If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.’” Note that the word impossible in verse 6 is bastar, which means isolated. 1. What do you hope to accomplish with this course?

I hope to gain a better understanding of the world and how it has progressed and changed. As I learned from American History, looking at the past puts things into perspective. I am excited to study how God has worked in our world and try to imagine what He is going to do in it in the days to come.

2. Look at the estimated dates in the three tables. Pick any one that you dispute, or are most interested in, and discuss it briefly.
The time period that intrigues me is 400 B.C. to the beginning of Anno Domini (the year of our Lord). I would love to know what was going on in the America’s during this time. The world was probably about 4000 years old by this point in history. It is inevitable that someone inhabited the Americas at this time but we do not know who.

3. Write about any aspect of Hammurabi's Code, such as its similarity or differences with the Ten Commandments, or its role in making the society (which society was it?) a success.

Hammurabi’s Code was a very simple, down-to-earth form of government. Jesus actually takes this concept one step further in the New Testament. In Matthew 7: 12 Jesus says, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Hammurabi’s Code stated that people would pay for their crimes by having their crimes done to them; an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Jesus says that we need to do to others what we would have them do to us, and if we follow these principles our society will be a success.

4. List the major ancient empires from the lecture in approximate chronological order, and identify which one you like best, and why.
The Assyrian Empire, the Chaldean Empire and the Persian Empire. I find the Chaldean Empire the most interesting. It was during this empire that Daniel lived.

Language is a very key aspect of an empire. If an empire does not have a distinguished language laid out, it is impossible for that empire to last. This is what happened in Ancient Egypt. The Egyptian Empire was very strong. It lasted from about 3000 B.C. until it was finally conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C. But the Egyptians did not have a very strong written language. They used hieroglyphics as their only form of written communication. This was eventually what led to the down fall of the empire.

6. Describe the three kingdoms of ancient Egypt, and mention what you like most about the culture or achievements of ancient Egypt.
Ancient Egypt was a very fascinating culture. The first era of this great empire was the Old Kingdom. This kingdom is known for prosperity and freedom from foreign invasions. The next kingdom was the Middle Kingdom. During this kingdom the Egyptian religion expanded beyond just the kings and nobles. Ordinary people also started embracing religion. The last kingdom of Ancient Egypt was the New Kingdom. This was a kingdom of great expansion. Geographically the Egyptians obtained more land, and also the pharaohs constructed large buildings and massive cities. I personally think that Old Kingdom is the most intriguing. I like how the Egyptians really defined who they would be during the Old Kingdom.

As our economy spins out of control I find a peace in knowing that we have been through this before. Somehow, even if it takes a very long time, the United States of America will pull through. The United States should have entered WWII sooner. It was inevitable that America was going to be sucked into the war. Having just the little advantage of surprise over the Japanese could have changed history for the better. In the back-round, Teddy Roosevelt looks on in frustration. The author is proposing that FDR is taking Teddy Roosevelt’s ideas and using them the wrong way. The author may have been doing this in response to the way that FDR had impended the “Good Neighbor Policy” in 1933. By establishing this concept, he contrasted how Teddy Roosevelt felt about foreign policies. The author obviously liked Teddy Roosevelt and did not like FDR.

I found the question with the quote from Christopher Columbus very interesting. I had not realized that gold was why he set out on his incredible mission.

3. Comment on any aspect of the Scopes Trial or the issues leading up to it, and/or can you compare it to any other influential trial in American history?

I find the entire trial interesting. It seems like one of those mysteries in history that we will never solve. We will never know the motive behind why Darrow submitted to Bryan.

4. Do you think the United States should have entered World War I, and why?

The United States made the right choice when they entered World War I. If the USA had not joined the fighting in Europe, the fighting would have eventually spread onto American soil. This would have caused even more American bloodshed. Although I do think that the USA needed to join into the war, the government should not have drafted so many young men. Perhaps it would have been better if the government had just drafted men from age 20 to 23 instead of men from 18 to 25. That way America would not have been lacking so many influential, hard working, young men.

5. Your view of Teddy Roosevelt, please.

I find Teddy Roosevelt very inspiring. Although he was the youngest President ever in office, he was still very influential in changing America for the better. I am very grateful that he established the national park system. So much of America’s indescribable beauty has been preserved through Teddy Roosevelt. 1. In your opinion, the 2008 election that concluded on Tuesday is most similar to which election in history, and why?

This past election was extremely similar to when Bill Clinton won against George Bush in 1992. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are very similar on practically every political level as well as having similar characters. Both were charismatic speakers, had very little international experience, continually talked about “change”, were extremely pro-abortion, had politically influential wives, and had never been in a war before. George Bush and John McCain were also very similar in their political views. Both men had lots of international experience, were very pro-life, and had fought in wars; McCain was a POW for seven years in the Vietnam war, and Bush had been on a plane that was shot down in WWII. On top of the similarities in the candidates themselves both elections hit during a weak economy and the press was incredibly biased towards the left.

2. Imperialism: a good or bad thing?

Imperialism can be good if the right people are being backed up at the right times, but in general it tends to be bad. By looking at past examples of imperialism this becomes clear. One example of this in history was when Russia invaded Afghanistan and the United States wanted to step in, but on an indirect level. So we decided to give weapons and military training to a group of radical Muslims known as the Taliban. Then twenty years later the Taliban would put this military training to use- causing 9/11. If the United States had not used this imperialism, maybe the twin towers would still be standing today.

3. Your thoughts on the progressive movement, please.

In the 1800s the progressive movement was very effective. However, today the progressive movement will not be influential in American politics. As President Reagan strongly emphasized, we need less government. This is what will help lower taxes and pick our economy back up.

4. Please explain the cartoon in the Minnesota Tribune, having the caption at top, "WHAT WILL HE DO!" and the caption at the bottom, "The eyes of the world are upon him." Include your description of the point of view of the cartoonist.

This cartoon was very influential in helping McKinley make up his mind to keep the Philippines instead of giving it over to Spain. The cartoonist is putting pressure on McKinley to decide if he is going to shelter the Filipinos from the cruelty of the Spanish by emphasizing that the whole world is watching and waiting. This political cartoon, as well as many others, was what ended up helping McKinley to choose to keep the Philippines.

If the light bulb had never been invented there would never have been such a huge amount of wealth in the world. His public school teacher saw him as a ‘problem child’. She thought he had a learning disability. Knowing that the most brilliant man in the 1800s was branded as 'disabled’ by a public school teacher sickens me. If only we could let every child who has been branded as 'disabled’ in the public school system have some individual attention. Maybe we are now missing something incredible that would have been invented if judgmental public school teachers hadn’t interfered with the minds of brilliant children.

The Americans advancement into the frontier may not have been a good thing. The Americans seemed to believe that they owned everything that they set foot upon. This killed so many innocent Indians. The frontier made Americans think that they were greater than they really were.

It is because America was formed almost as a huge invention. There had never been a country designed like it. A spirit of excitement and enthusiasm was present in the hearts and minds of many people who lived in the United States.

I believe that they are very influential. Last week, as I studied the political carton untitled “Abraham’s Dream”, I found myself thinking of the views presented in it as factual. It has been very interesting to study political cartoons from many years ago.

Alexander Graham Bell was the most influential person in this time period. He created the greatest communication invention of all time which is the telephone.

This cartoon is signifying how The United States in drowning in a sea of debt because they need to switch to gold currency. Abraham Lincoln’s main goal was to save the Union.

2. Explain the purposes of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution.

The purpose of these three Amendments of the Constitution was to give rights to African Americans. The 13th Amendment banned Slavery. The 14th Amendment protected the rights of citizens against interference by the State. And finally, the 15th Amendment established that men of any color and any race have the right to vote.

3. Who was your favorite military figure from the Civil War, and why?

Robert E. Lee was my favorite military figure of the Civil War. Even though he was not on the side of justice, I respect the loyalty that he gave to his home state through fighting for its political views. He was a military genius who was honored by both his army and the apposing army. When he did finally surrender, it was because his army could no longer stand. If he had not surrendered, many more young men would have been unnecessarily taken by the cruelness of war. He truly was an incredible man with his sights set in the wrong direction.

4. How would you have handled Reconstruction differently?

I would not have used so much military force. Andrew Johnson sent too many soldiers into the South to keep control. Although some military enforcement was needed, I believe that Johnson overdid it. Everyone was sick of war. Soldiers were ready to go home and families had been broken in pieces for way too long.

5. Abraham Lincoln was homeschooled. Do you see any characteristics in him that might have reflected his homeschooling, such as his independent thinking?

Through being homeschooled, Lincoln was more considerate of people of all ages and ways of life. A quote from Across
Five Aprils by Irene Hunt shows how an eleven year old boy in 1863 saw how Lincoln had something different and refreshing:

“Mr. Lincoln was a man who looked at problems from all sides. Mr. Lincoln was not a faraway man like General McClellan or Senator Semner of State Seward. Mr. Lincoln had plowed fields in Illinois; he had thought of the problems men came up against; he was not ready to say, ‘Everything on this side on the line is right, and everything on the other side is wrong.’”

This political cartoon was drawn by Thomas Nast and published on February 18, 1871. Nast was trying to defend the Chinese immigrants against prejudice and discrimination. Many Chinese were mislead into working in America by violence, kidnapping or broken promises. One of the things that caused the Mexican War was when Mexico began to ‘steal’ American citizens by giving them land if they became Mexican citizens. This specifically infuriated President James Polk who quickly pulled some strings in order to declare war on Mexico. The war only lasted for about two years and on February 2, 1848 Nicholas Trist signed The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This ended the Mexican War although James Polk was not thrilled with requirements of the Treaty.

James K. Polk was one of the most influential people from 1840 to 1860. He not only initiated the Mexican War but he also ended it. He annexed Texas into the United States and admitted Iowa as a free state. He also settled a disagreement with Britain by establishing the northwest boundary in the Oregon Treaty. On top of achieving the greatest territorial expansion of the United States, he reduced tariffs and reestablished an independent Treasury. Unlike most politicians, Polk said what we was going to do, and then did it. He also saw every person who visited the White House while he was president. Polk was truly a remarkable man.

This was when Civil War broke out in Kansas over the inflamed issue of slavery. The name ‘Bleeding Kansas’ came about because of the ugly acts of violence that both sides of the issue were committing.

This political cartoon was drawn in the 1860s and the cartoonist was expressing his dislike for Stephan Douglas’s view on slavery. Steve represents Stephan Douglas and both Colombia and Uncle Sam represent America. This cartoon is exposing how Douglas lost most of his credibility by pushing for the Nebraska Bill. People from both the North and the South were mutually disgusted by the way that he acted in this situation. He received his ‘spanking’ when Lincoln completely defeated him in the presidential election of 1860.

No. It was certainly not avoidable. People who have radically different political and moral beliefs cannot live in harmony as one Nation. The North believed that slavery was ethically wrong; one man should not own another. While the South strongly relied on slavery for their entire economy to exist. But America had too many crucial decisions to make. Without a President, decisions would be made too slowly to meet the needs of the newly born nation.

B)Ever since the establishment of the Confederation, there were major financial problems. Everything they did to correct their problems sent them further into debt. Nothing was effective in improving the economy. A new form of government was clearly needed to hold the country together.

Congress is established in Article I. Article II establishes the amount of power that the President has. In Article III the Supreme Court is established.

Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. This invention made the South prosper. Through the effectiveness of the cotton gin, the South became the primary source of cotton production in the entire world. The cotton gin essentially gave the South a huge advantage when the Civil War came around. The amount of money that they earned from cotton made them nearly invincible.

This cartoon depicts the ratification of the Constitution by the states as the construction of a building. The columns representing Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut are already in position because those states had already ratified the Constitution. A pair of hands (most likely God's) are shown lifting the Massachusetts column into an upright position alongside the others. This cartoon expresses how the colonies were seeing how they needed to be one nation under God in order to succeed. It was published in the Massachusetts Centinel anonymously on January 30, 1788.

1)The British burdens hurt all of the colonists in their specific trades and walks of life. 2)Taxes hit at a bad time- right during the post-war depression.
3)Nearly one third of the colonists were not even English.

2. Who used the phrase "taxation without representation," and why?
Patrick Henry created this phrase that described what England was doing to the colonists so perfectly. He used this phrase because the English were taxing the colonies to pay the debt that the English were in. Also, the colonists were not benefiting in any way from the taxes.

3. What was the Boston Tea Party?
It was when the Son’s of Liberty protested the British tea taxation by throwing the tea into the bay. This was a very important event in the pre-war time.

4. Do you blame anyone for the Salem Witch Trials? Explain.
I believe that the doctor is at fault. His absent-minded suggestion that the girls were possessed by the devil started the Salem witch trials. Many people were shunned by society and sometimes, even killed for being accused of witch craft.

5. True or false: colonies having more religious freedom had less conflict with the King. Explain your answer.
False. If you look at the only three colonies that never became royal colonies you find that this statement could not be true. Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania all had complete religious freedom. They had more of a reason to fight for than any of the other colonies. It is amazing what people can accomplish when they are determined to succeed.

6. Briefly discuss (in a few sentences) any of the debate or discussion topics from the lecture, or mysteries (see H3 below for the link).
Debate: Should England have been able to impose direct taxes on the colonies?
No. England may have founded the colonies but England did not have the right to impose direct taxes. The people in the colonies had to work hard to simply survive, and they certainly did not have extra money to give to the English. England was not supporting them in any way, so why should they support England in any way? This also further proves Patrick Henry’s statement about taxation without representation. The colonies had no say about where their money went once the British took through taxation.

7. Explain the meaning of the political cartoon on the right. As with all cartoons, pay particular attention to all of its details. Provide a rough estimate for its date.
It represents that the colonies could never defeat the powerful British Empire without uniting. The way that the states are arranged in geographical order seems to represent how together they could accomplish amazing things. It was probably drawn in the beginning of the 1700s.The words across the front, “Join, or Die” tell the story of this time. They scream the emotions that the political unrest was causing.

The Spanish were the first to settle in the new world, then the English and lastly the French.

2.What do you find most inspiring about Christopher Columbus?

I find Christopher Columbus’s persistence and determination extremely inspiring. It is hard to imagine sticking to a dream as whole heartedly as he did. As I look at his life, I am inspired to run the race which God has laid out for me more fully and with just as much resolve as Christopher Columbus did.

3. Why do you think several early settlements in America failed?

The Early American settlements failed because of the selfish and lazy Europeans who inhabited them. The men had traveled to the new world in search of an easy way to get rich fast. They were expecting to find gold, and when there was none to be found, they simply did not look for other ways to support themselves. Gumption and initiative are both needed to form the first settlements in a new and harsh land. These particular Europeans were lacking in both.

4. What was the motivation for the first settlements in the Massachusetts area? Include mention of how the Pilgrims differed from the mainstream Puritans.

The Pilgrims were motivated to settle in the Massachusetts area because of the religious persecution that was taking place in England during that time. They were not happy with how the Church of England was turning predominantly Catholic. Around the same time that the Mayflower set sail carrying the Pilgrims, another group of people were also destined for America. A group of Puritans were not pleased with the Church of England, but for different reasons then the Pilgrims. They sailed to America in hopes of starting an improved Puritan church. One that was pure through and through.

5. Explain how William Penn was remarkable.

William Penn turned what seemed like an impossible dream into a wonderful reality. Although many people came to America in search of religious freedom, no one really took the initiative to organize a society that would work. Through founding Pennsylvania, William Penn succeeded in this remarkable way.

6. What were the four types of colonies, and (if possible) give an example of each.

The Joint-Stock Colony is when investors fund a colony through a joint-stock company. A state that falls into this category is Virginia.
A Charter Colony is founded on land granted by the king to a company or person. A good example of a state that falls into this category is Rhode Island.
A Proprietary Colony is owned and controlled by at least one person. Pennsylvania is an excellent example of this type of colony.
The Royal Colony is a colony founded or taken back under the role of the king of England, and he appoints a certain governor to rule it. This eventually happened to Virginia.

7. Briefly discuss (in a few sentences) any of the debate or discussion topics from the lecture.

Debate: Were the Puritans right to be strict and expel people of other religions?

There were many times when the Puritans acted way too strictly for their own ambition. I believe that they were too strict. It is very sad to read about how they misinterpreted the Word of God. God is a god of love. He accepts everyone as they are, and fully forgives everyone who genuinely asks Him. The Puritans certainly did not treat many people with the kind of love that God intended them to use.
