: Scotland was occupied for about a century up to the Forth-Clyde line, fortified as the Antonine Wall; earlier, the battle of Mons Graupius (as described by Tacitus) certainly sounds like a decisive vanquishing of the Caledonians, even if the whole of (whate later was to be) Scotland was not occupied.
-Ireland may call it the war of indepencence, but it's probably best described as a time of civil strife or something like that. There was no war as such.
-the Treaty in '21 set up a free state, a republic wasn't declared till the 40s
-Ireland still isn't called the Republic of Ireland. It's there, in the constitution that the name of the state is Ireland, or Eire in the Irish language.
Ok guys a few things. One england invaded in the 11th century (not the 17th). The war of independence was not a proper war but did lead England to pull out of the 26 counties keeping the 6 counties of ulster under british control which lead to the CIVIL WAR. Ireland is now the richest country in Europe and has the 4th strongest economy in the world. It's cheaper to buy an appartment in Manhatten than in Dublin .. it's a funny old world.

Defining the territory of the Republic as consisting "of twenty-six counties in the traditional provinces of Munster, Leinster, Connacht, and three of the nine counties of Ulster" is, I think, flawed. Particularly since counties can be divided up and merged. Since County Dublin was split up into 3 counties and an independent city - not subject to any of the counties. At the least the territory should be described as consisting "of twenty-six of the traditional counties" I think a better description would be All of the Island of Ireland excluding the portion that remains as part of the United Kingdom.

Ireland's constitutional position was until the 19th amendment, that the Republic consisted of the whole island, this has now been amended to recognize the north, but still maintain an attachment to the territory. Technically the constitution recognizes the north as being part of the republic for the purposes of citizen ship and part of the UK for everything else.
Re "OK guys a few things": (1) The so-called English Invasion was in 1169 - that makes it 12th century, not 11th. (2)It was hardly English. As the Anglo-Celtic historian, Norman Davies, puts it: "For one thing the people who launched it were not English and not even acting on behalf of England. For another, the operation ended in what may be best rated a half conquest."

The expedition was the brainchild of a dispossessed Norman baron from Wales and an exiled Irish chief. They were joined by sundry knights and hangers-on who probably only knew enough English to order the servants around. (Check out the names: fitzStephen, fitzGerald. Norman names that are now as Irish as Patrick(who was British)). The adventure was given tacit assent by Henry (who was in Aquitaine at the time) and some sort of after-the-act legitimacy was given by the English-born Pope Adrian IV; but in no way was it an "English Invasion". A group of bored knights and nobility after a bit of pillage and what-have-you followed a pair of Irishmen with bees in their bonnets. User:AlanE 19:55, 15 May 2007 (EDT)
Fianna Fáil needs the fada As in á - since that changes the "a" to a long a as in "fall"

Fianna Fáil is described as "generally conservative on social issues (though probably not by American standards)."

This strikes me as being a bit poorly researched. If the author is unsure of how conservative Irishness compares to conservative Americanness then why make a comment that is probably not accurate.

As far as the issues go -

It opposes legalization of abortion. Abortion is illegal in the Republic of Ireland in all cases except for the risk to the life of the mother.

It did partially support the movement to make divorce legal, but divorce in Ireland is not a casual thing like it is in the USA, you have to be separated for 4 out of the preceding 5 years.

On the whole, as far as most social issues are concerned I think that you will find that Fianna Fáil is more socially conservative than most Americans.

Also Fianna Fáil is not "Traditionally the party of Big Business and the farming community", but rather traditionally the party of the small farmer and the urban worker. Fine Gael is more likely to be considered the party of Big Business and Big Farming.

Additionally summery of Fianna Fáil should neglect the term pragmatic. The party strives for pragmatism. For them points of view of the site a more important distinction is that they oppose Ireland joining NATO.

Many members of Fine Gael support joining NATO.
A group of working-class Russians went to the Tsar's winter palace to peacefully protest against harsh working conditions. They were shot down by soldiers before they could speak to the tsar; many were killed and wounded.

A completely different Bloody Sunday occurred in Northern Ireland in 1972. The mainly Catholic Civil Rights movement were holding a march in Derry. The British soldiers responded by shooting thirteen unarmed protesters dead, including six minors, and another died from the wounds a few months later. Five had been shot in the back. Army vehicles ran over two protesters. The British never punished those responsible and several songs (one by John Lennon, and other by U2) commemorate the tragedy. There is a Christian rock group that dedicates its name to the event, calling themselves “Bloody Sunday.”
It's worth noting that while the events in London Derry may be the most famous of the many days which have gained the title "Bloody Sunday", it is a title used for several other days during the history of the Irish Conflict.
This omits the fact that the Irish in question were Catholic Irish, at odds with Protestant Irish, and that the big issue in dispute between them was whether the province in which both lived, but where the Protestants were a majority, called Ulster, was to remain part of Britain, or become part of the Catholic Republic of Ireland.

The Ireland is a parliamentary democracy in north-western Europe consisting of 26 counties on the island of Ireland.

Geography
The island of Ireland is located in the Atlantic Ocean, to the west of Britain. Of the thirty two counties of Ireland, twenty six are in the republic, including all counties in the provinces of Connacnt, Munster and Leinster. Of the nine counties of Ulster, three (Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal) are in the republic and the remaining counties remain in the United Kingdom. The longest river in Ireland, The Shannon -- also the longest in the British Isles -- divides the Republic into a largely urban eastern section, dominated by Dublin, and a more rural, less economically vibrant western area.

History
The republic was declared in 1948. The State itself was founded in 1937, although a semi-independent state had existed in the South of Ireland since 1922.

Politics
The Republic of Ireland uses Proportional Representation meaning that there are a large number of political parties. The Republic of Ireland has a bicameral legislature, "the Oireachtas". It consists of the 166 seat lower house Dáil(parliament) and the 66 seat upper house, the Seanad(Senate), which both sit in Leinster House, Dublin. In recent times the country has been governed mostly by coalitions generally of either Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats or Fine Gael and Labour. The Republic of Ireland is also a member of the European Union and is represented by 13 MEPs.

Fianna Fail: (Pronounced Fee-Na Fall which is Irish for 'Soldiers of Destiny'). Ireland's main political party, they do not class themselves as either left or right wing but are generally considered centrist and traditionally the choice for republicans (in the Irish sense, meaning supporters of a United Ireland) due to its foundation by Eamon de Valera; considered by his supporters to be the greatest of all Irish nationalists. Fianna Fail is traditionally a Populist party, spearheading the disease and slum eradication programme's of the 1950's and 1960's. Nowadays however, it is considered to be on the pragmatic centre as well as supportive of the building developers. Currently the largest party in the ruling coalition. Led by Bertie Ahern, current Taoiseach(Prime Minister) of the Republic of Ireland.

Fine Gael: (Pronounced Finna Gale, Irish for 'Family of the Irish'). Ireland's second largest party. Fine Gael is traditionally socially and fiscally conservative. Traditionally the party of Big Business and the farming community, although generally liberal on social issues (though probably not by American standards) Under the leadership of Garret FitzGerald in the 1980's, the party embraced social democracy. Today the party likes to characterize itself as a party of the "progressive centre". Led by Enda Kenny.

Labour Party: A social democratic left-wing party, similar to the Labour Party of the British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Pat Rabitte is the leader of the Labour Party.

Progressive Democrats: The second party in the ruling coalition, it is very right wing on economic issues, favouring low-taxation, pro-business policies, were once liberal on social issues such as divorce and contraception, but now dominate the centre ground on social issues. Mary Harney is the current interim leader and Minister for Health of the Republic of Ireland.

Green Party: A left-wing party in favour of environmental protection, renewable energy and a stronger system of social security. Elections for the leadership are underway, with Patricia Mc Kenna and John Gormley in the leading position.

Sinn Féin: (Pronounced Shin Fane, Irish for 'Ourselves') Remnant of Ireland's oldest poltical party, it is closely connected with the Provisional IRA, a terrorist/guerrilla movement that sought a United Irish Republic. They have recently embraced a more democratic approach. They are a party of left-wing socialist economics which espouses liberal social issues such as gay marriage. They organise in all 32 counties of Ireland. Led by Gerry Adams.

Socialist Party: A left-wing Trotskyite party. They oppose capitalism and seek a United Socialist Ireland. Led by Joe Higgins.

Bloody Sunday (1905) took place in St. Petersburg, Russia.

It's worth noting that while this may be the most famous of day which has gained the title "Bloody Sunday", it is a title used for several other days during the history of the Irish Conflict.

It is a great over-simplification to say that the Bloody Sunday events in Derry were sparked by a "peaceful Irish march for freedom". The possibility of IRA provocation should also be addressed, plus the fact that the British government has, over the last several years, conducted an extensive investigation into Bloody Sunday, at great cost.

I could be wrong, but I was certainly under the impression that the march in question was for civil rights, not freedom perse.

-Scotland was never conquered by the romans

Ireland is an island off the northwestern coast of Europe. According to the last census the Republic of Ireland has a population of 4,062,235

The population is primarily of Celtic descent but in recent years, owing to economic success, Ireland has seen a huge influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe, Africa and China.

The primary language is English, however, the official language of the Republic is Gaeilge, or Irish. In the Irish language the official name of the Republic of Ireland (which appears on all coins, stamps, and government documents is Eire.

History
Historically, Ireland's culture has been distinct from other regional cultures, as it was the one of the only Celtic territories never conquered by the Roman Empire. For several centuries after Roman rule, it was independent of outside governance, until it was conquered in the 17th century by Great Britain. The British retained control of the whole island until a war of independence broke out in 1919. The war with the British ended in 1921 with the British retaining control of six counties in the region of Ulster. The territory independent of the British became the Irish Free State, while the territory controlled by the British became Northern Ireland. Later, in 1937, the Free State adopted a new constitution, changing its name to Ireland.

Politics
In the Republic of Ireland the electoral system is Proportional Representation meaning that there are a large number of poltical parties.

Fianna Fail: (Pronounced Fee-Na Fall which is Irish for 'Soldiers of Destiny'). Ireland's main political party, they are a centre-right Conservative party. Traditionally the party of Big Business. Currently the largest party in the ruling coalition.

Fine Gael: (Pronounced Fwi-Na Gale, Irish for the 'United Ireland Party'). Ireland's second largest party.

Labour Party: A liberal left-wing party, similar to the Labour Party of the British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Progressive Democrats: The second party in the ruling coalition, it is very right wing on economic issues, favouring low-taxation, pro-business policies, but slightly more liberal on social issues.
Green Party: A left-wing party in favour of environmental protection, renewable energy and a stronger system of social security.

Sinn Fein: (Pronounced Shin Fane, Irish for 'Ourselves Alone') Irelands oldest poltical party, it is closely connected with the IRA, a terrorist/guerrilla movement that sought a United Irish Republic. They have recently embraced a more democratic approach. They are a left-wing socialist party, although they are socially conservative.

Socialist Party: A left-wing Trotskyite party. They oppose capitalism and seek a United Socialist Ireland.

The southern 26 counties officially became a Republic in 1949.

It is generally referred to as the Republic of Ireland, although this is technically merely a description of the country.

Lil cain:

Roe v. Wade (410 U.S. 113) was a landmark Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion in limited circumstances in 1973.

Parties
Roe's real name was Norma McGarvey, a carnival barker, who became pregnant.

Wade refers to Henry Wade the Texas Attorney General at the time.

Opinion
The opinion written by Justice Harry Blackmun, and divided a pregnancy into sections. Up until the fetus was viable, at the "quickening," the State could not regulate abortion.

Notable for its definition of fundamental rights, the opinion is an expansion of the Supreme Court's jurisprudence under the Fourteenth Amendment, which, along with Griswold v. Connecticut, sets up spheres of personal activity which the state cannot regulate without good cause. Specifically, the Court held that the Fourteenth Amendment protects implicit rights enumerated in its penumbra, if not the text itself, which includes the right to privacy. The holding of the Court has become a foundation of fundamental rights jurisprudence, and has been heavily relied upon since it was decided, and underpins many other famous cases, such as Lawrence v. Texas.

Controversy
Several cases, up for decision at the Supreme Court in the 2007 term, may whittle away at the holding of the case. Specifically, a South Dakota law banning nearly all abortions is seen as a deliberate attempt to force a test case, where "pro-life" activists will have a chance to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider Roe. However, while Roe may be highly distinguished in these cases, the fact that the central holding of Roe v. Wade is so important to modern civil rights jurisprudence suggests that the whole case is unlikely to be overturned in its entirety, based on the United States concept of stare decisis, or respect for legal precedent. Under this outlook, losing Roes holding would be fatal to an entire constitutional structure, which the Court disfavors.

Some commentators suggest that limitations of Roe may actually be good for the "pro-choice" movement, as it would allow "pro-life" activists to vent their animosity against judicial activism, while forcing the public to create a more moderate legislative solution to the problem. These commentators perceive the American public as more moderate than either the "pro-life" or "pro-choice" movements.

Ireland is an island off the northwestern coast of Europe.

Historically, Ireland's culture has been distinct from other regional cultures, as it was the one of the only Celtic territories never conquered by the Roman Empire. For several centuries after Roman rule, it was independent of outside governance, until it was conquered in the 17th century by England.
LOL! Great edit, Lil Cain. If she really was a lesbian, it's funny that she got pregnant. I would think a cite would be needed for that...--AmesG 22:45, 9 March 2007 (EST)
I've also edited out the section about no one caring about the judgement for a time. Even if it was not widely known(something I don't have the first notion about), I'm sure a substaintal minority of those affected did care at the time(I am of course open to being rebutted on this, but with references preferably)
also, should the bit at the end not be a statement of fact, or not there? Surely what the judgement says is legal fact at this point, not opinion
