Mark DeJ American History Homework 12

1. The main protagonists in the “Cold War” were the United States and the Soviet Union. The “Cold War” lasted from 1945 to 1991.

:Correct!

2. The Korean resulted in over 50,000 American casualties. The United States entered this war out of fear that communism was spreading. In 1950, communists from North Korea invaded South Korea. The country had already been divided along the 38th parallel. General MacArthur led the American troops in South Korea. Perhaps we might have had more of a chance of winning this war had Truman not fired him in April of 1951. Unfortunately, in 1953, when the war ended, North Korea and South Korea were still divided at the 38th parallel. Since American intervention had absolutely no affect on resolving the issue, I think this war was a lost cause.

The Vietnam War was probably the one of the biggest mistakes in the history of this country. The reason as to why we entered is unclear. It is said that we entered the war to stop the spread of communism but I believe that President Johnson got the U.S. into the war in order to increase his popularity and to win reelection in 1964, which he did. The Vietnam War was difficult because of the tactics used by Americans compared to those used by the North Vietnamese. The U.S. fought for small key areas and cities while the North Vietnamese fought an all out war for the entire country. In addition, the fact that Vietnam is a jungle put the U.S. soldiers at a great disadvantage. They were not used to fighting in these conditions. After years of fighting and nothing being accomplished, America left South Vietnam. We lost a huge amount of soldiers - 58,000.

:Superb analysis. However, I think American intervention did have an affect in preserving South Korea, because otherwise ''all'' of Korea would be communist today.

3. I was most impressed by the case brought by the NAACP known as Brown v. Board of Education. The result of this legal battle was that the Supreme Court ruled that segregation of blacks and whites in public schools was unconstitutional. I think was milestone for African Americans. The “separate but equal” policy that had been upheld to this point makes no sense. To me. This Supreme Court decision helped give blacks a chance for a better education and better lives in general.

:Superb answer, will use as a model.

4. Unfortunately, one of the things President Lyndon Johnson is best known for is getting the United States into the Vietnam War. In 1964, the USS Maddox attacked three Vietnamese P-4 torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. President Johnson twisted this story to make it sound like they attacked the Maddox. Using this, he got Congress to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, enabling us to assist the South Vietnamese in the fight against the Vietcong. He also got more public support for the war.

:Excellent.

5. I think that the Taft-Hartley Act was the best Act to come from the 80th Congress. This Act was passed in spite of President Truman’s veto. This Act helped stop unions from destroying companies and America’s economy. It did so by doing the following:

It excluded supervisory employees from the benefits of the National Labor Relations Act.

It gave employees the right not to join unions in states that supported this right.

It prohibited negotiation of closed-shop agreement between employers and employees and allowed a union-shop agreement between employers and employees only if the state law permitted it.

It required that unions give 60-day notice before going on strike.

It enabled the federal government to prohibit a strike for 80 days if the strike would endanger national health or safety.

:Terrific answer!

6. President Nixon is probably the most controversial presidents ever and is one of the most known because of his resignation over the “Watergate Scandal”. Most people either like Nixon or hate Nixon. There are very few people “in between”. Nixon was extremely intelligent, but did not trust many people. The “Watergate Scandal”, which was a break in at the offices of the Democratic National Committee during the 1972 presidential campaign, overshadowed his presidency. Few people remember the good things that occurred during his presidency; that he ended the war in Vietnam; helped smooth relations with Russia and China; announced an accord with North Vietnam to stop American involvement in Indochina; and Henry Kissinger, Nixon’s Secretary of State negotiated disengagement agreements between Israel and Egypt and Syria.

:Superb answer, and good point about Nixon and China.

7. The name used to describe the people in charge of the building in the picture was the Warren Court. The Warren Court got its name from Chief Justice Earl Warren. The Warren Court was an “activist court” that handed down rulings on very liberal concepts and extended judicial powers into areas where it had previously shown restraint. For example, the Warren Court established a precedent for eminent domain, which is the power of the government to seize private property for government use or to give to a third party for public use.

:Very good, but note that eminent domain always existed, and the Warren Court ''expanded'' it to allow taking from one private party (e.g., a homeowner) in order to give it to another private party (e.g., a developer to build a shopping center). Previously eminent domain was allowed only to take property to build actual government buildings, like a new City Hall.

H1. What Muhammad Ali said about how his religion, Islam, does not allow him to get involved with “non holy wars” is true. However, I think that “holy war” is subject to interpretation. Osama Bin Laden claims to be fighting a “holy war” against America. Many Islamic extremists would like us all to convert to their religion. That being said, I also believe that Muhammad Ali used his religion as a way to get out of fighting in the Vietnam War.

:Superb insights.

H2. What is your view of communism, and the American response to it?

I think communism theoretically sounds good to some people but in reality is quite bad. It is bad because you pretty much give everything up to the government. In a communist society, the government controls the economy. Communism rejects capitalism. There is only one political party – the communist party. Any form of opposition is suppressed. The media is restricted. People do not enjoy religious freedom. There is no way to better yourself. There are not as many options in a communist society as there are in a capitalist society.

I understand that in the 40’s through the 60’s, Americans feared communism, but I think some people were too extreme. This was and is a strong country and I do not think the people would let communism take hold. I do agree that we need to make sure communists do not hold high-level government positions.

:Excellent insights again. May use parts of this as a model answer.

H5. General MacArthur was a career Army man. He graduated first in his class from West Point in 1903. He served with distinction during World War I, was the supreme commander of the Allied forces in the Pacific during World War II, and was put in charge of the United Nations forces during the Korean War. Like many homeschoolers, MacArthur had strong beliefs and was willing to take risks. He is famous for the quote, “In war, there is no substitute for victory.” This was proven in 1950 when he devised the plan to divert the North Koreans’ attention to the southeast corner of the peninsula while he had the Marines attempt a colossal amphibious invasion further north at Inchon. Many obstacles stood in the way of this mission being a success. The tide fell 32 feet twice daily. The weather conditions were torrential. However, with MacArthur’s determination, the North Korean army was pushed back, even with help from China and the USSR, and freedom was restored for South Korea. MacArthur wanted to continue the war effort to defeat communism but unfortunately, President Truman fired him in 1951.

:Terrific answer, one of the best in the entire class!

:Superb homework paper, one of the very best in the class. Perfect 100/100. Congratulations!!!

Mark DeJ American History Homework 13

1. I really enjoy reading and learning about World War II because of what was sacrificed to keep the world safe from a dictator who wanted to exterminate an entire race and rule the world. I also learned (this year) that there was a positive result of the United States entering the war. World War II got us out of the Great Depression. In addition, after the war, America experienced an economic boom.

2. Ronald Reagan was born into a poor family in Illinois and was not very good in anything he did; whether it was sports, school, acting or sports broadcasting. However, two things he was good at were keeping an upbeat attitude and being president. I think that one of the reasons he was such a good president is that President Reagan wanted to do what was best for the country, not what would make him more popular as a president. He lowered taxes, reduced the size of the government, and returned power from the federal government to the states. He hated Communism and even went so far as to calling out Mikhail Gorbachev, the leader of the Soviet Union, to tear down the Berlin Wall. The result of his working with Gorbachev was the end of the Cold War.

Bill Clinton was born into a poor family in Arkansas, but unlike Regan, was a good student. He also was a good musician. He plays the saxophone. Clinton was a very popular president, but unfortunately, he did not always do what was best for the country; he did what people wanted so that he could stay popular. Also, Clinton differed from Regan on his views on the economy. He raised taxes on both individuals and businesses. However, as his presidency went on, he realized that people did not like his liberal ideas as much and preferred more conservative ideas; so to stay popular he changed and became less liberal. Unfortunately, the thing that Clinton will always be remembered for is the “Monica Lewinsky Sex Scandal” in which he had sex with an unpaid intern while he was president. This really showed a lack of good moral judgment.

3. I believe that the most important trend guiding American history is the outsourcing of American jobs to foreign countries and the closing of factories in this country. My concern is especially in the technology area, as my family has experienced this first hand. I am also concerned that we have closed so many of our factories and buy so many things from countries, like China. We purchase the goods made in China because since they pay their employees so little, the products are cheaper. People forget that these products are usually poorly made and fall apart quickly! I think that if the country continues this trend, we will continue to lose jobs and hurt our economy.

4. Terrorism is the most important threat to the future of America. However, I think it is the most important threat to the world, not just America. “9/11” was the worst terrorist attack to happen in this country. The people responsible for this attack were extremist Muslims. Extremist Muslims want to bring down this country. I think that we really need to stay on top of the immigration of people from Muslim countries, we need to secure our borders, and we should keep Guantanamo Bay open. Guantanamo Bay is a military prison of the United States of America that is on the island of Cuba. This prison holds people that are believed to be terrorists indefinitely, without charge or trial. Many people are against holding these people because they believe it is unconstitutional to do so. Others support detaining these suspected terrorists because they might be a threat to our nation’s security. I fear that Obama will change many of our policies regarding terrorism which have been keeping us safe since “9/11”.

5. I would say the 1980’s through the present is a time period when culture had a negative impact on America. Throughout this time period, I think that America has been in a decline because of the fact that many people have become complacent and self-centered. Many people care much more about money, power, and material things than even their own families! That is why we have so many corrupt politicians today compared to when the country was started. That is why we have such a high rate of teen pregnancy and drug use. In addition, many people today are ill informed and do not verify the information they hear on the television and read in the papers. The schools no longer teach the students to seek the truth and not to believe everything they hear on television or read in newspapers or magazines.

6. Two of the greatest achievements of Ronal Regan were: ending the Cold War and “supply-side economics” (also known as “Reaganomics”). We already covered the Cold War in the last homework assignment so I will briefly discuss “supply-side economics”. Ronald Reagan adhered to the economic theory that included: reducing the growth of government spending, reducing marginal tax rates on income from labor and capital, reducing government regulation of the economy and controlling the money supply to reduce inflation. I became obvious towards the end of his presidency that this plan had worked and helped the American economy.

7. This map was drawn in 1550 and was drawn by Sebastian Munster, a German cartographer. This is the first map that displayed the New world as a separate land mass as well as showing “America” as one of the names for the region. I do not think anyone back in the 1500’s could have imagined what was going to happen to this country and how powerful it would become. So in short, I believe that we have exceeded the expectations of the cartographer and other people of his time.

H1. While it is very hard to predict anything that will happen in the future, I do not believe that much will happen because, for the most part, 2 years is a small period of time to get a lot done. I also think that while Obama (and his Democratic Congress) would like to push a liberal agenda through, I think Obama, like Bill Clinton, will realize that many people in this country do not like those ideas. I believe the worst thing that might happen would be an attack on American soil done by the terrorists to test Obama to see how he handles the situation.

H4. The Patriot Act was passed in 2001 and signed by President George W. Bush on October 26th, 46 days after the September 11th bombings. It is an anti-terrorism bill and was specifically written because of September 11, 2001 attacks. Its main purpose was to provide law enforcement with the tools it needs to battle the domestic war on terror.

Many people are against this bill because they believe that it violates civil liberties. They feel that the government is going to monitor everything they do. Supporters of this bill believe that it is ridiculous to think that the government is going to monitor everything everybody does. For example, Section 215 of this Act allows the FBI to obtain documents in the hands of a third party if those documents are relevant to a terror investigation. People against this bill believe that the government will “spy” on them because the government does not like the books they read or the government does not like an article they wrote. However, the FBI cannot do anything without the approval of a federal court. No court is going to approve a request because members of the FBI have a problem with the books someone reads or an article they wrote.
Also people who are against the Patriot Act believe that the items contained in this bill are new, but I learned from my reading that the Patriot Act is actually a expansion of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (or FISA) that was passed by Jimmy Carter during his presidential term.

Lastly, in my personal opinion, I believe the government has no right to spy on a citizen unless there is a lot of proof suggesting that illegal activities are going on in his or her home.

H5. September 11, 2001 was the most horrific day in American history because 19 Muslim terrorists hijacked four airliners with intent to injure Americans and America. Two airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center, one crashed into the Pentagon, and the third was “taken back” by the passengers in an attempt to stop the hijackers. Unfortunately, the plane went down over Pennsylvania, killing all those on board, but preventing another crash into a building, perhaps the White House. Those people were heroes. This attack caused an immediate reaction by America to send troops into Afghanistan to look for a man named Osama Bin Laden, who masterminded the whole attack. We have not yet captured Bin Laden. This became known as the “War on Terror”. Since that time American troops have also entered Iraq to put an end to the terror cells in Iraq and in the process we have stopped the evil dictator of Iraq, named Saddam Hussein.

I believe that entering these countries was a smart thing to do so that we can avoid something like this from happening again as well as keeping other countries safe from terrorists. We are also trying to bring Democracy to these countries so that they can elect leaders that will not turn into dictators and will keep these terrorists groups under control.

Mark DeJ American History Homework 12

1. The main protagonists in the “Cold War” were the United States and the Soviet Union. The “Cold War” lasted from 1945 to 1991.

Few people remember the good things that occurred during his presidency. that he ended the war in Vietnam, helped smooth relations with Russia and China, announced an accord with North Vietnam to stop American involvement in Indochina, and Henry Kissinger, Nixon’s Secretary of State negotiated disengagement agreements between Israel and Egypt and Syria.

1. The main protagonists in the “Cold War” were the United States and the Soviet Union. The “Cold War” lasted from 1945 to 1991.

Mark DeJ American History Homework 12

1. The main protagonists in the “Cold War” were the United States and the Soviet Union. The “Cold War” lasted from 1945 to 1991.

5. I think that the Taft-Hartley Act was the best Act to come from the 80th Congress. This Act was passed in spite of President Truman’s veto. This Act helped stop unions from destroying companies and America’s economy. It did so by doing the following:

1. It excluded supervisory employees from the benefits of
the National Labor Relations Act.
2. It gave employees the right not to join unions in states that
supported this right
3. It prohibited negotiation of closed-shop agreement between
employers and employees and allowed a union-shop
agreement between employers and employees only if
the state law permitted it.
4. It required that unions give 60-day notice before going on
strike.
5. It enabled the federal government to prohibit a strike for 80
days if the strike would endanger national health or safety.

Mark DeJ American History Homework Eleven

1. Learning history is valuable because you can read how various countries began and what the people in those countries did to mold what their countries are today. I think having an understanding of past decisions/mistakes does help you make decisions in the present. For instance, I think many people in the U.S. today are leery about the bailouts because they have seen our taxes and national debt rise so much because of the many social programs we have, many of which started with the New Deal.

2. A decision like whether or not the United States should have entered World War II or whether the U.S.A. should have entered it sooner or later is much easier to make many years after the fact because we can now analyze the events that led to the decision. That being said, I believe that the United States had to get involved. Some people think the war would have ended quicker had we gotten involved sooner, but can one really make that statement with certainty? I do think, however, that while a policy of maintaining neutrality in foreign affairs is not necessarily a bad thing, Hitler and the Third Reich had to be stopped. I also think the attack on Pearl Harbor needed to be answered.

3. In 1924, during the Coolidge Administration, The National Origins Act or The Immigration Act of 1924 was enacted. This law set the quota for immigrants entering the United States of America at 2% of the total of any given nation’s residents in the United States as of 1890. It completely excluded immigrants from Asia. While this law was very discriminatory, I do understand the need to regulate the number of people entering the country and even regulating the number of people from various nations. For instance, I believe that we have so many illegal aliens in this country from Mexico that we need to “shut the border” to Mexico. I also think that with the War on Terror, we need to halt the people entering America from Islamic nations. Many people will say that this is racist, but I think we really need to get a handle on the people who are here and try to prevent putting our nation at risk.

4. Charles Lindbergh was an aviator who became very famous for his non-stop flight from New York to Paris. On May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew his plane, “The Spirit of Saint Louis”, from Roosevelt Field, Long Island to Paris, France in 33½ hours, through miles of snow and sleet. This act awed and inspired many. In fact, Lindbergh received so much publicity that many people believe the media was largely responsible for the kidnapping and death of his son 1932.

5. “Throwing money” at a problem does not always fix it. Just look at the public educational system in this country. We spend so much money and yet many students leave high school with very little. The New Deal spent a lot of taxpayers’ money and yet, it did not end the Depression. While I do understand why some of the programs under the New Deal were put into effect, and I do think they were needed, it just seems to me that when the government takes on these programs, the result is usually inefficiency.
I am not sure what I would have done to bring an end to the Great Depression, I know that I would not have raised taxes on hard working Americans and on businesses. When you tax individuals, their purchasing power is reduced. When you tax businesses, their hiring power is reduced. It is a vicious circle.

6. I think that the atomic bomb was a horrible invention because it can kill many people and has horrible lasting effects, but I believe that dropping the bomb on Japan brought an end to the war and saved many American and Japanese lives in the long run. The Japanese were fanatics and were not going to surrender easily. The war could have gone on for years.

7. This cartoon depicts Theodore Roosevelt as an angry spirit that thinks his fifth cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt has assumed a dictatorial rule helped by the fact that the members of the Senate and House were predominately Democrats. Theodore Roosevelt is well known for saying “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far”. However, the sticks carried by the two Congressmen in the cartoon are absurdly huge. I believe that this cartoon was created around 1933, after FDR’s first 100 days in office and was drawn by a Republican whose point of view is different from that of FDR.

H1. I do not think you can make a blanket statement as to whether or not there is a trend in the presidency towards becoming more of a “leader” or a “follower” because I think it depends on the person as an individual. If the person is strong willed and does not waiver in his convictions, he will be more of a leader. If he just wants to make everyone happy, he will be a follower. I believe that President Bush was more of a leader when he first became president, especially after 9/11, and now I think he has become more of a follower, probably due to the harsh criticism of him.

H2. I think General George S. Patton was an astounding military commander and the best general America ever had. Nicknamed “Old Blood and Guts”, he was the most feared general by the Germans because of his ferocious aggression and brilliant military tactics. The United States Army pitted Patton against one of Germany’s best field commanders, Erwin Rommel, who specialized in desert warfare and Patton completely decimated Rommel’s army! It is completely fascinating to me that historians estimate that Patton’s Third Army was responsible for 55% of all German casualties and yet his army only suffered 9% of the casualties on the American side.

H3. Debate: Do you think we are entering another depression now?

No, I do not think we are entering another depression. I believe that the economy goes up and down in cycles. I do believe that we are headed for some difficult times. I also fear that our new president, Barack Obama, and his Democratic Congress, will try to enact even more social programs than FDR did under the New Deal. To pay for these programs, I believe that they will raise taxes on people earning $125,000 or more per year. (For some reason they believe these people are wealthy.) However, those people are the ones that stimulate the economy. They are the ones who are more likely to purchase large ticket items, go on vacations, and attempt to start up businesses.

Mark DeJ
Homework 10

1.	I could have been more prepared for the midterm by studying more than I did. I think I took for granted that I would remember a lot more than I did. I think I should prepare my own outline for each unit to help me study for the final.

2.	I missed both political cartoons. I am angry that I interpreted them incorrectly because I find political cartoons interesting and challenging.

3.	What I find interesting about the Scopes trial is that because many books and movies have been written and produced about it, many people believe that Clarence Darrow, the defense attorney, on the side of evolutionism, won the trial, but he did not. The jury found the defendant guilty. The judge imposed a fine of $100. Later it was found that this was an error. According to the Constitution of Tennessee, a fine in excess of $50 had to be assessed by a jury. Therefore, under appeal, the judgment was reversed.

Another interesting thing is that this trial was held in 1920 and the evolution verses creationism argument is still being debated in 2008. However, nowadays public schools are teaching evolutionism instead of creationism, unlike in 1920 when teachers in public schools wanted to teach creationism. I believe that all theories should be taught and students should decide which view they think is best.

4.	I do not think we could have avoided entering World War 1. The reason for this is because Germany was attacking unarmed boats, some with Americans on them. This created tension between America and Germany. In addition, President Woodrow Wilson had promised that America would not get involved with the war. The Sussex Pledge was issued by Germany in 1916 promising to stop sinking unarmed boats; but Germany started sinking boats again in 1917. Then, also in 1917, the German foreign minister sent the “Zimmerman Telegram” to Mexico requesting that they invade the U.S. in exchange for the return of the Southwest. This caused President Wilson to ask Congress to declare war with Germany because Germany was threatening our security.

5.	I think Teddy Roosevelt was a good president. This is shown in his greatest accomplishment - the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903. This was an agreement with Panama which granted the United states a 5-mile wide tract of land to build the Panama Canal for 10 million dollars plus $250,000 per year. Also, I believe Teddy Roosevelt was a peaceful man. He even won a Nobel Peace Prize for helping enable the treaty between Russia and Japan to end the Russo-Japanese war (the Treaty of Portsmouth). Lastly, I think Roosevelt was correct in his beliefs about preserving the English Language in America and opposing immigration.

6.	In 1895, the Supreme Court ruled that The Income Tax Act of 1894 was unconstitutional. The court ruled that the income taxes on interest, dividends and rents were direct taxes and direct taxes could only be assessed if the tax was apportioned. Since this tax was not apportioned, it was found to be unconstitutional. To override this Supreme Court decision, a Constitutional Amendment had to proposed and ratified. (An amendment can be proposed by either a 2/3 vote of each house of Congress or by a constitutional convention called by Congress at the request of 2/3 of the states. An amendment is ratified by either ¾ of the state legislatures or by ¾ of special ratifying conventions called by the 50 states.)

In 1909, President William Taft proposed a constitutional amendment to permit an income tax. The Sixteenth Amendment was passed by the Sixty-first Congress and submitted to legislatures of the states on July 12, 1909. On February 25, 1913, Secretary of state, Philander Knox, announced that the amendment had been approved and had become part of the U.S. Constitution. Congress then passed the Revenue Act of 1913.

I think that taxes are necessary to gain revenue to run the government. However, I also think that the current tax system is out of control. I recently learned about the Fair Tax. The Fair Tax plan is a proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with a national retail sales tax. Specifically, the Fair Tax plan would abolish all federal personal and corporate income taxes, estate, gift, alternative minimum, capital gains, Social Security, Medicare and self-employment taxes and will put into place one simple retail sales tax. The Fair Tax will tax us only on what we spend on new goods and services, not on what we earn. The Fair Tax would remove the “loopholes” that some of the wealthiest people use to reduce their tax burden. In addition, there are many people who do not file tax returns, people who work “off the books” , and people who earn money through criminal activity. The Fair Tax would also make sure that everyone pays his or her fair share. Lastly, the Fair Tax would abolish the IRS, saving the government a great deal of money because it would no longer have to maintain this agency

7.	This carton shows Theodore Roosevelt acting as the angel of peace getting Russia and Japan together to sign a treaty to end the Russo-Japanese War.

H1. Roland Garros, a French pre-war aviator wanted to solve the problem of firing a machine gun from within an airplane. On a visit to Paris he met up with Raymond Saulnier, of the Morane-Saulnier Company, the manufacturer of the tractor-powered monoplane he flew. The two joined forces and after a number of failed attempts, in 1915, Garros and Saulnier came up with the idea of attaching steel deflector plates that would deflect any bullet that hit the propeller. They were triangular shaped with the apex pointing to the pilot – the idea was that bullets would be deflected of at an angle, rather than coming back at the pilot. Garros tested this arrangement and it was successful! He shot down a two seater reconnaissance plane on the first pass. Unfortunately, Garros was shot down and the Germans got the plane and improved on Garros and Saulnier’s idea.

H4. I found the midterm exam to be very challenging and required far more studying than I thought. I think that the midterm covered the majority of what had been discussed in class over the last few months and had only a few questions that I thought had little to do with what we discussed. I feel that I learned from this experience. I will be better prepared for tests from now on and not just take any exam expecting an A+.

H3. Debate: Should government be able to interfere with free enterprise by establishing maximum working hours for men?

I think the government should not be able to interfere with the working hours established by a private company. “Less government”, not “more government”! However, I do believe that an employer should set forth the hours expected of an employee when he or she is hired. My father had a job in CT that never informed him of the many hours of overtime required. Because my dad was salaried, he did not receive any additional pay for these hours. He eventually left that position.
1.	I think the 2008 election is most similar to the 1980 election when Jimmy Carter ran against Ronald Reagan. I think these elections are similar because Jimmy Carter faced many problems similar to the ones faced under the Bush Administration. Carter had to deal with an energy crisis, a poor economy, and problems in the Mideast. Many Americans felt that Jimmy Carter did not deal with these problems effectively. They wanted a change. In the recent presidential election, I believe that Barack Obama won the presidency because a larger percentage of Americans did not want to vote for another Republican president. They hoped that voting for a Democrat would help correct some of the problems that America is facing.

Please note that there are differences in the two elections. Jimmy Carter was an incumbent, John McCain was not. Also, Ronald Reagan won
the election by a huge margin: 489 electoral votes to 49. Obama did not win by such a large margin.

2.	Imperialism is when a large, developed country exerts power and influence over a smaller, foreign country. Most people consider imperialism a bad thing, and relate it to America, only. They seem to forget that Great Britain, Spain, the USSR, and others have all practiced imperialism at one time or another. I believe that imperialism can be a good thing. The Panama Canal was constructed during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency. This canal allows passage from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, replacing the long and dangerous route of going through the Drake Passage and Cape Horn, located at the southernmost tip of South America. Great Britain used imperialism to bring an end to the world slave trade.

3.	I believe that the Progressive Movement was a positive thing. People who were considered to be “Progressives” came from all political parties. Progressives wanted “better government”; not “less government”, not “more government”. The years from 1900 to 1920 are considered the “Progressive Era”. Some writers of articles on the Internet claim that the Progressive Movement ended with World War I, but some state that it continues up to this day.

I think many of the goals of this movement, such as breaking up monopolies and the protection of American workers labor were good. I think that progressives have been able to get laws passed that brought about some needed changes in this country, such as building code laws. However, I think that while this country needs “better government”, it also needs “less government”.

4.	This cartoon, which appeared in the "Minnesota Tribune", is a cartoon in reaction to the possible return of the Philippines by American to Spain. The man in the cartoon is President William McKinley. He is shown holding a young Filipino, who is depicted as a savage. The world is standing by watching him make his decision. The cartoonist shows that McKinley, has two choices: to keep the Philippines as an American territory, which is clearly the choice of the cartoonist; or to return the Philippines to Spain, which is represented by the cartoonist as throwing the boy off the cliff. However, the third option available to McKinley, which would be to grant the Philippines independence, is not an option to this cartoonist. I think this is shown by the cartoonist because the boy is depicted as a savage, not yet ready to take care of himself.

H2. “Yellow journalism”, which began in the 1890’s, was when a newspaper increased their circulation (and profits) by creating fantastic headlines. Two people associated with yellow journalism are Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. Many historians charge these two men with irresponsible reporting.

Many of the newspapers of today are biased against Republicans. I believe journalists should report the news, not their opinions, except on
the editorial page. I think many journalists displayed irresponsible reporting during this past presidential election.

I think newspapers in the recent election played an important role in the outcome of the election. First of all, I believe that many newspapers pushed for Obama from the start, even at the expense of Hillary Clinton! I think they made Obama look like a man who was going to change
everything and improve the country, possibly the world! I think many journalists made McCain look like an old man who would probably die in office, leaving his vice president, Sarah Palin, who was portrayed as an ignorant and vain woman, to become the president. For example, one AP
headline was:
"'PALIN TELLS KIDS THE VICE PRESIDENT RUNS THE SENATE.'''
Many people today believe everything they read. They do so, either out of laziness to verify the information or because they just do not care.

H3. What caused the USS Maine to explode?
The USS Maine was a second-class armored battleship that was destroyed in Havana Harbor, Cuba in February of 1898. After an investigation by a US naval court it was determined that a mine had exploded under the ship killing 260 men and injuring 6 others. The newspapers sensationalized this event and reported that Spain was responsible for the explosion. Many people believed this report to be true. This event contributed to the decision of the United States Congress to declare war on Spain. War was declared at the end of April.

In 1910, the Army Corps of Engineers raised the USS Maine. The ship was believed to be a hazard to navigating the waters. She needed to be moved. Before the ship was moved to the deeper waters of the Gulf of Mexico, another court convened to examine (the remains of) the vessel. This court determined that the explosion was from the ship’s magazines, which were triggered by an external blast.

In 1976 Admiral Hyman Rickover and a group of naval officers reviewed the evidence from the previous investigations. They concluded that a coal fire started aboard the Maine and caused the magazine explosion. They found no support for the “mine theory”.

More recently, in 1999, National Geographic did an analysis of the explosion based on computer modeling. They concluded that an inward bend to the hole in the bottom of the hull pointed to an eternal explosion.

The exact cause of the explosion still remains a mystery to this day.

American History Homework Seven

1. Mark Twain named the post-Reconstruction era, which was the time period from approximately 1877 – 1890; the “Gilded Age” because what appeared to be a golden age was in reality was an age of greed and corruption.

In many ways, this era was golden. Great inventions came from this time period. Industries, such as the steel industry, grew. Many men became extremely wealthy. However, there were people who became wealthy using unscrupulous methods. These people were referred to as “robber-barons”.

2. The characteristic I like most about Thomas Edison is that he was a man who believed in hard work and never gave up even though he was deaf. I think homeschooling gave Thomas Edison the drive he needed to make all the great inventions he has given the world. These inventions made him a very wealthy man. Had he remained in school, I believe that he would have been left behind. His public school teacher thought, because of his behavior compared to other children, that he was stupid.

3. I agree with Frederick Jackson Turner, who in 1893 wrote ''The Significance of the Frontier in American History''. He believed that the frontier experience had promoted individualistic democracy. The people who settled the frontier were forced to think for themselves and to be resourceful. This influenced the views of a good portion of Americans. Many enjoyed this independence and did not want a government that controlled everything.

4. I think what makes America the leading country in inventions is “Yankee Ingenuity”. Ingenuity is the quality of being creative. Americans are known for their creativity, their imagination, and their resourcefulness. I also think that patents helped this cause. The U.S. Constitution has a clause that allows people who invent something to obtain a patent, which means that person has special rights of ownership for a specific number of years. Patents exclude other people from making, using, selling or importing the invention so the patent holder can make it, sell it, and reap the profit.

5. I think that political cartoons may or may not have an impact depending on whether or not people can do something about the problem shown in the cartoon.

I have found a cartoon that portrays John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company as being monopolizing and controlling other companies, such as the bank, the railroads, and other small oil companies. This cartoon had no impact because a large number of people were employed by Standard Oil Company and did not want to get on Rockefeller’s bad side, out of fear of possibly having no oil and/or losing their jobs.

I have found another number of cartoons created by a cartoonist named John Nast. These cartoons depict William Marcy Tweed or “Boss” Tweed, a New York politician as a criminal, who ran a fraudulent and corrupt ring that was pillaging New York City and creating an excessive amount of debt for the city. This had a huge impact on people. Ultimately, Tweed was arrested, tried and convicted.

6. I think one of the most influential people between 1877 and 1896 was Thomas Nast, a German immigrant who is famous for his political cartoons. Thomas Nast was very influential through his cartoons. He was the artist of one of our recent political cartoon homework questions, “The Chinese Question”. That cartoon showed that if America were really a free place for all men then Chinese people would be treated no differently. This cartoon either made people think about the injustice being done to the Chinese or made people more Anti-Chinese. Thomas Nast also created many cartoons about the corrupt New York politician, “Boss” Tweed. “Boss” Tweed’s actions were brought out in the open and angered many citizens of New York. Tweed was eventually brought to justice and thrown in jail. Lastly, Nast also used his cartoons to illustrate his strong Anti-Catholic views. This widely appealed to fellow Catholic-hating Americans and caused problems between Catholics and Protestants.

7. This cartoon appeared in William H. Harvey’s famous pamphlet, ''Coin’s Financial School''. It depicts Uncle Sam sinking in gold quicksand, unable to reach prosperity, because the U.S. was relying on gold instead of on gold and silver. This reliance on gold made the money supply tight and lowered prices. The author/cartoonist obviously favors bimetallism, which is a monetary system which uses more than one commodity, such as gold and silver. The artist believed that both gold and silver should be coined without limit at a fixed price ratio set by legislation.

Honors Questions

H1. I believe that Grover Cleveland was a conservative. Many of his ideas are in line with those of conservatives. For example, he had an extreme dislike of paternalism, a system under which an authority figure treats those under his control paternally by regulating their conduct and taking care of their needs. Because of this belief, he opposed the idea of a social service state. He felt that Americans should have economy, purity and justice in their government, but nothing else.

Also, like conservatives, Grover Cleveland was fiscally frugal. He opposed tariff favors for businesses, pensions for Civil War veterans, land favors for railroads, and “pork barrel spending” by the government.

Lastly, conservatives oppose high taxes. So did Grover Cleveland. Here is one of his most famous quotes: “When more of the people's substance is exacted through the form of taxation than is necessary to meet the just obligations of the Government and the expense of its economical administration, such exaction becomes ruthless extortion and a violation of the fundamental principles of a free government."

H2. James Blaine was a Senator from Maine from 1863 to 1876. He is known for his opposition to granting state funds to religiously affiliated schools. He felt so strongly about this issue that he wrote “The Blaine Amendment” and tried to have it be incorporated into the U.S. Constitution. This amendment did not pass. However, The Blaine Amendment did become part of 37 State Constitutions.

The Blaine Amendments are good, bad and bigoted. I believe the Amendments are good because often times when you let the government get involved, the government becomes too controlling. I believe the Amendments are bad because they prevent school voucher programs and I think school vouchers are necessary, especially in poor areas. I think these Amendments are bigoted because I believe James Blaine proposed the original amendment and the states followed his lead as a direct result of the anti-Catholic bigotry that was prevalent in American politics during this time period.

H4. I do support unions, to a certain extent. In the late 1800’s, workers began to unite to fight poor working conditions. Unions were created. These unions brought about many needed reforms such as limiting the workday, better wages and ending child labor. Groups such as the National Labor Union of the Knights of Labor brought about changes through non-violent strikes & peaceful negotiations. In today’s age, unions help negotiate decent wages and good benefit packages.

However, sometimes unions just make things worse. In the late 1800’s, some of the strikes became violent. For example, the Knights of Labor Union at the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company went out on a strike, which ended in violence. This strike became known as the Haymarket Square Riot. It ended up injuring workers, policemen, and citizens. As more riots erupted during strikes, many Americans lost faith in unions. Nowadays, some unions have become so strong, they negotiate deals that end up putting the business in jeopardy.

In conclusion, I believe unions can work if the people and the company they work for can come to agreements that are fair to both parties.

Here is one of his most famous quotes:
“When more of the people's substance is exacted through
the form of taxation than is necessary to meet the just
obligations of the Government and the expense of its economical
administration, such exaction becomes ruthless extortion and a
violation of the fundamental principles of a free government."

1. I think one of the most important causes of the American Revolution was that the colonists were tired of getting taxed without representation, as evidenced by the Boston Tea Party and Boston Massacre. The colonists were angry that they had “virtual representation”, which really meant no representation.

I believe that the second most important cause of the Revolution was that the colonists were used to “salutary neglect”. For many years, England let the colonies do as they pleased, without interference. When King George III came into power this policy changed.
Lastly, I think that the third most important cause for the American Revolution was that 1/3 of the colonists were not even English and didn’t see why they had to give anything to England.

2.	“Taxation without representation” became the slogan for the colonists. It is unclear as to who said this phrase initially. The colonists believed that they were unfairly taxed on many things and had no say in these Acts of Taxation. They did not have any members representing them in Parliament.

3.	The Boston Tea Party came about because of the Tea Act enacted by Parliament. The East India Company obtained a monopoly on tea from England and was able to undersell the colonists. Samuel Adams and a group of colonists disguised themselves as Indians and boarded the company’s ships. They then threw all the tea overboard.

4. I blame jealous people for the Salem Witch Trials. I think people were jealous of others who had more than they did and made up random stories about them hoping to get them convicted. Furthermore, they hoped that the conviction of the alleged witches might result in the opportunity of obtaining their land or property.

5. False. I believe that the religions practiced by the colonists didn’t matter to the King of England. The conflict between the King and the colonists began after the end of the war with France. England was in great debt. To alleviate some of that debt, the King and the members of Parliament decided to start taxing the colonies.

6. Debate: Should England have been able to impose direct taxes on the colonies?

I don’t think England should have been able to tax the colonists because the colonists had no representation in Parliament. I believe that Patrick Henry was right in his belief that only the people who live in those colonies could and would understand the impact of those taxes and therefore, needed to be heard in Parliament. For the British to claim the colonists had “virtual representation” was not enough.

7. This cartoon was drawn by Benjamin Franklin. Its meaning is that if the colonies did not join and become one, divided they would fall. This cartoon was drawn shortly before the American Revolution, probably in the 1750s or 1760s, because the colonies united and became free from England.

H1. When I looked at the map of the 13 colonies, I was less impressed with the colonies and extremely interested as to why Detroit was on the map. I did not realize that Detroit had been founded in those early years. I researched the city of Detroit and discovered that Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, a French man, felt that that the French needed a post, a major stronghold, in the west to keep the British from moving westward. He was also interested in “Europeanizing” the Native Americans so that he could convince them to establish settlements around this post. He thought that the best place to establish this stronghold would be on the river in an area known as le detroit. Cadillac’s plan was approved by King Louis in 1701. Cadillac was named the commandant of the new post.

H3. What happened to the Lost Colony?
I think the people of the Lost Colony of Roanoke were either taken hostage or killed by Indians. I believe this is true because of the fact that the Indians found the secret area where the settlers kept all their maps and books and destroyed them. I think the word “Croatoan” carved into a tree was done by the Indians to take credit for their actions just as some terror groups do today.

H5. Debate: George Washington. Was he great, and if so, why?
I think George Washington was great because while he could have had ultimate power, he declined to do so. In addition, George Washington was so popular, he was offered a third term as President, but refused to accept the position, setting a very important precedent. Lastly, President Washington stressed the importance of neutrality in European affairs which did not directly affect America and I believe this is not such a bad idea.
2. That he tried and tried for 10 years to achieve his goal of finding a better way to reach the Far East.

3. I think that several early settlements in America failed because of any of the following reasons: the natives might have killed the settlers, the settlers may have died from diseases, there were harsh winters with no food, the settlers were not used to farming or hunting to obtain their food.

4. For religious freedom. The Pilgrims or Separatists wanted to remove themselves from the Church of England. The Puritans wanted to purify the Church of England.

5. Because he formed his own colony where people could practice any religion they chose.

6. The four types of colonies were:

Royal colony - Virginia

Proprietary colony- New York

Charter colony - Connecticut

Joint-stock colony - Massachusetts Bay

7. I believe the Puritans were right to be strict and to expel people of other religions because they owned that area of land and could do whatever they wanted. I believe that this problem relates to a problem we have in America today. Spanish immigrants come into this country and expect everything to be in Spanish. This country's language is (unofficially) English. Therefore, the immigrants should have to learn English (and not the other way around). I believe that if a person does not learn English within a specific time frame, they could be asked to leave.

H1. Problems that a colony based on religious ideals might encounter are:
1. People of other religions might try to convert them.
2. Some of these people who have broken off could cause internal issues.
No, I do not think it can survive. I think a good example would be the country of Iraq with all the various Muslim sects. Even the Puritan colonies in this country had to give in eventually and let people of other religions move in.

H2. The Massachusetts Bay Company was a joint-stock company established by a royal charter in 1629. It was intended to advance trade and colonization. It was financed by investors. Puritan investors eventually aquired all of the stocks and elected John Winthrop as the leader of the company. The company's emphasis then became purification of the Church of England. The Massachusetts Bay Colony became one and the same. Eventually the colony became part of the Dominion of New England.

H4. Mercantilism is an economic system which limits imports from other countries and maximizes exports to other countries. This would guarantee that more money would would come in than would go out. Another aspect of Mercantilism is to use colonies to supply raw materials at a very low cost to the Mother Country who, in turn could use the materials to produce products to sell to the world. In theory, Mercantilism is a good idea. However, obvious problems occur. Sometimes items from other countries are cheaper. Also, the colonies might want more of the money being made by the Mother Country.

I believe that if a person does not learn English within a specific time frame, they should be asked to leave.
